How to make slow-stitched balls from scrap fabrics

  • The first part of my slow-stitched danglers project, these fabric balls will be combined with bells, squishies, tassels and hoarded doodads, to create hanging decorations for the festive season or any time of the year. Next time, I'll be making the bells :)
    You can use all kinds of scrap fabrics - lightweight silks and cottons, or fabrics with a bit of stretch work well for these - but do experiment with whatever you have. I'm using pieces from two Scrap Pack bundles from Bazaar -
    www.bazaarshop...
    Type "scrap" in the search box to check out all the options, and don't forget to use our special code to get an extra little something in your order - type ARTY FARTY ANNIE TREAT in the note-to-seller box.
    Go to my linktree to find lnks to our free Discord community and the Arty Farty Annie Group on Facebook -

    These are fabulous Annie, it’s proper slow stitching, like you I need to slow stitch because it heals my mind and makes me calm. 💕

      Ah yes Jan, it's the best kind of slow-stitching for me, once the shapes are made and I can chill out just randomly stitching into them, it's so calming :)

    Hi Annie, greetings from OZ 🇦🇺😎😍 Its uncanny how these videos pop up when you need them xx I was playing & sorting my craftroom yesterday, yet again ( as we do ), & I came across a container of beautiful silk scarves I used to buy when I came across them, the colours are so beautiful & now I have a project to use them for thanks to you...xxx I'm excited 😁😁 Your shapes are so lovely xxx At the moment I am thread painting & beading some very colourful 8 inch mandalas I cut from a long skirt I bought for $4 from an op shop. I cut out 20 (8 inch) & 25 smaller mandalas & they are turning out so lovely xxx I've had many 'oopsies' with the seed beads, lots ending up on the floor, at one stage I somehow ended up with a few up my pyjama sleeve ...... go figure !!!!!! 😂😂🤣🤣😂 All part of the fun xx TFS XXX love & hugs 😘😘😘

    Your video was a lovely surprise pop-up on my feed this morning and I found myself liking and subscribing within the first few minutes!! Then I watch the video and found a bounce of excitement within myself that I have not felt in some time. I can’t wait to pull out my scraps of fabric and start making this little gems…. I’m tempted to get more scraps just looking at the treasure trove on your table… I know I should just thing about cutting up my saris that I no longer wear (I’m Indian & now disabled so walking is challenging but walking with lots of fabric flapping around my legs might just be asking to fall 😮. Seeing all the fabric pieces on your tables remind me of a trip to Rajasthan for Indian wedding clothes shopping. Thank you for a fantastic video and can’t wait to check out the rest. I need to do some work first but now I have something to look forward to after work. Varsha 💖✨🙏🏽🫶🏽

    • @artyfartyannie
      @artyfartyannie  2 месяца назад

      Ah thank you so much Varsha, your comment has made me very happy! I know that feeling when you get inspired by fabrics, or a video, or an idea and you just can't wait to get home and try it out. How lovely that you have saris you could use for slow-stitching projects - a shame to cut them up in a way but this would be a different way to use and enjoy them. My Mum was anglo-Indian, she had two or three saris, but sadly I don't know what happened to them, I would love to have them now and do something special with them. She brought back two Rajastani puppets from a trip to India some years ago, I still have them, but nowhere to display them, they're really beautiful. Please do share some pics of your projects, I would love to see them. Thank you for subbing and happy stitching :) xo

    • @artyfartyannie
      @artyfartyannie  2 месяца назад

      Yes they do, but you need to email them with what you want, then they will quote you for postage and invoice you if you want to go ahead - if you try to order int he normal way on the website, the system will say they don't ship to your country, but they do. Obviously the postage will cost more, but maybe if you get more bundles it will work out better value, I know people have ordered from US and Canada and been very happy, as they've posted pics in our Fb group :)

      I'm so happy you enjoyed making one of these - yes indeed you could fit loads of beads onto these, but that's a bonus for me as I have loads to use :) Sequins cover the space much faster, I just dotted them around though, spaced them out a bit :)

    Lovely little objects! just wondering why would you embroider after making the ball and not before?

    • @artyfartyannie
      @artyfartyannie  2 месяца назад

      Thank you! I find it much easier to stitch into them once they're made up and you have something to hold onto, and the straight stitching all around once you've gathered up and stuffed the ball, helps to firm up a nice round shape too. If you did the stitching before gathering and stuffing the ball, your stitching would be distorted or lost in the folds - you really need to do the decorative stitching last. I guess you could embroider first for the bells and squishy shapes, but I can't see an advantage to doing that, for me it would feel more fiddly - but you could give it a go and do let me know if you find a better way, I'm always open to suggestions :)

      Laura, I don't know if I mentioned it in this video, but Bazaar definitely do ship to the US, members of our community in the US, Canada and New Zealand have shared pics of Bazaar packs they've received and been very happy with.
      I don't go over it in every video, but what you need to do if you're outside the UK, is NOT to try and put your order through the website in the usual way, but instead email them with what you want and where you are. They will then quote yo for shipping and if you're happy to go ahead, they'll arrange payment and delivery. Hope that helps :)

      Hi Kathy. I didn't make the ones that I show here, they came in with Bazaar scrap packs - but I have made them, they're pretty easy and a good way to use up scraps of felting wool from other projects. They way I've done it is to start with rolling up a little ball of wool (ie roving wool used for needle felting), start stabbing into it to firm it up and keeping adding more layers, stabbing as you go, until it's the size you want. If you keep turning as you work, it helps to keep the ball shape. You could use waste bits of felting wool or even orts or knitting wool for that inside ball, just keep adding layers of the felting wool on top of it. You can create patterns with different colours on the outer layer too. I believe some people then put them through a hot wash to further felt the fibres together, but I haven't actually tried that myself. Hope that helps - I'd love to share some pics if you have a go, youcould share them in the FB group or Discord community, linktree is in the description :)

    Has anyone in the USA successfully ordered from the Bazaar shop?

      Yes, definitely - and Canada, Australia and New Zealand. People in those countries have shared pics in the FB group of their Bazaar packs and been very happy with them. Just don't try putting an order through via the website in the usual way. What you need to do is to email them with what you want, let them know where you are, they will then let you know how much shipping would be and if you want to go ahead, they'll arrange payment and delivery. Hope that helps :)

      Yes I believe they do but instead of ordering on their website you have to email with what you want and they'll quote you the shipping cost and sort out payment method etc

      As Claire says, you need to email them - if you try to order in the normal way it will say they don't ship to your country, but they do, they'll quote you for postage and then invoice you if you want to go ahead :)
