Distortion is a big no-no for Opera singers and Henk was pretty nervous doing distortion for the first time in his life, but for Floor he did it. And he *nailed* it. Floor's look of bliss says it all, this is her idol doing this, going so far outside of his wheelhouse, for her.
I have yet to show this to anyone and hear negative feedback. The fact that Henk did that sitting down with less than 100% confidence is ridiculous. One of the greatest songs ever written in the hands of a master of his craft.
I think you are on to something when it comes to the individual experience when listening to favourite artists/singers. We all have our favourites but just respect other people's tastes. I didn't know Henk Poort before Beste Zangers but I'm really impressed by him. He is a true professional and very open musically :D This was a great rendition of The Sound Of Silence!
Another great reaction from you Olly !! about Henk...like we say in Greece: "Φωνάρα ο τύπος !!!" (Enormous voice the dude) !! Of course is Henk Poort...what else can you expect !!
Henk did Disturbed's version of the song because he wanted to do something closer to Floor's music style for her. As an opera singer, the distortions were new to him but he did great! Edit: what fnglert said. 😉
Right now in a talkshow Henk Poort, he is going to sing The Phantom of the Opera with Floor at the Nightwish concert in the Ziggo Dome in the Netherlands next year.
*Henk's distortion* : before he and the other singers flew down (in Spring) to resort Atzaró on Ibiza Island for tv show BesteZangers, Henk Poort learned the distortion vocal technique in Amsterdam within 2 hours with his vocal coaches Alberto ter Doest and Daan Smits. They are certified UVS voice coaches at the Universal Voice Institute in Amsterdam. UVS (Universal Voice System) is a simple and clear system to get the most out of your voice. Quote by Poort: *”If I'd use distortion on stage in an opera setting I'd be fired immediately...”*
Henk is awesome! I, too, would never have heard of him if it wasn't for Floor and her Beste Zanger appearance. Great show by the way. I wish they would do music shows like this in North America rather than pitting singers against each other. Such mutual respect for each other's talents. Wonderful to see them just sharing music with each other instead of trying to 'beat" each other. Cheers!
To stay with Henk Poort (and Beste Zangers) just a little longer, Henk did a great duet with Emma Heesters, "Vivo Per Lei" in the BZ season's last episode. Gotta react to it ;-)
Hi my dear, thx for noticing our other Dutch gems to.. In the same duet episode Floor sang whit Tim Shallow.. It's a must see!!.. The thought in this show is that all those different artist sing 1 evening in honor of the artist next to the host.. This song Henk sang specially for Floor, but all the others did that to so if you want to here song of nightwise sang differently specially for her watch the episode or you tube all the songs Beste zangers 2019
He sings it as an 63-year old, which changes the messages completely, just like Johnny Cash with Hurt... It's like you said...it's about the effect it has on you....
yay, Olly reacts to Henk :D I knew he'd grab your attention sooner or later hehehe, for me, he's way up there with Floor, and he's such a funloving friendly man, no wonder they all call him Uncle Henk. Also, thnx for mentioning the other duets being more that worth it to be checked out as well. If this evening did have have "Shallow" and "Phantom of the Opera", we'd be talking about any of the other duets instead because the entire evening was ridiculously good. But yeah, the behemoth that is "Phantom" casts a large shadow, so i do hope other reactors will point them out as well, like you just have, ty for that :) Great reaction again Olly, and i get what you're saying about the difference between original songs and the covers thereof, they can never share the same emotions, but they do share the emotions of the one singing it, and their interpretation of said song, giving certain songs a whole new meaning ("Hurt" by Johnny Cash or Nine Inch Nails comes to mind, both great songs, both completely from a different angle)
You might want to check out Tim Akkerman of this show. Or Emma Heesters singing to Floor. Emma sang a song called Strong , which Floor wrote about her own mother who suffers from chronic pains. It’s an emotional song to Floor...
Natalia I didn’t know that. I guess I didn’t stop and think enough about the lyrics....I don’t think Tim ment to insult the US! I primarily liked his voice a lot in this particular song. And I don’t know much of the characteristics of Pink. I’ll tell you what, I will alter my message. Obviously, I don’t mean to annoy anyone. And you are free to not like Tim’s choice of songs. I think he has a good voice.
I can't wait to see him sing with Floor with the actual Nightwish once they play in Netherlands. :) This was a "condition" for Henk singing in the Phantom of the Opera duet with Floor... he would sing the duet with her as long as he would be invited to sing with her with Nightwish when they play in Netherlands. She said "yes yes yes yes" :D
Olly, You Are A Great Reactor. And You Should Give Yourself Credit For the Fact That YOU Know Music, And You Feel It As I Do. Being A Drummer Seems like Forever...Wish You Lived Next Door. Wow!
in same episode henk did this there was also EMMA HEESTERS singing STRONG , that made floor cry, you think you will handle that one. think you should try
Another song you should react to from this episode (Floor's music): Emma Heesters - Strong Floor wrote it for her mother who suffers from chronic pain, so make sure you are stocked on tissues.
For more Henk Poort then search for, The 3 Baritons. The complete shows are on you tube and most of them are done with English subtitles by Denise Hofs
As we are in this song, "Sound of Silence", I'd love if you reacted to a rendition by Pentatonix. They are an a capella group that has already won three Grammys. They aren't rock but their version based on Disturbed cover but with their own twist.
Yeah there was some good stuff on the duets episode. But poor Ruben, nobody wanted to sing with him. All he got to do was that silly song with Tim at the beginning.
If you love Henk’s voice please have a look at his duet with Emma Heesters (from the same episode The Phantom was sung): ruclips.net/video/OumZnDaQINo/видео.html
You know, as much as i like the Disturbed Version, i have found another one years before they covered it, by Michelle Darkness. And this one is different and much much better in my opinion. Michelle Darkness - The Sound Of Silence ruclips.net/video/lrJDCIqGU64/видео.html
Well all I have to say is this. Even though I do like listening to Opera I never liked Opera singers. Weird isn't it. Most of them behave out of stage like They the only ones making music and rest is just peasants. Henk Poort is great example how wrong I am. During this show only He broke so many so called rules of Opera singing and it was great every single time. He is showing not only that He is one of the biggest living voices but also a real, funny and brave Dude who won't hesitate to push himself out of His comfort zone. And the sound.... Just Wow
This version of Sound of Silence was made by Disturbed back in 2015 with the consent and help of the originals writers and singers, Simon and Garfunkel, go ahead and check out that video, you´ll realize Henk bye far wasn´t even close, but still....a good performance!

I am so proud of Henk Poort!! I’ve admired him for years. He is so amazing.
I have yet to show this to anyone and hear negative feedback. The fact that Henk did that sitting down with less than 100% confidence is ridiculous. One of the greatest songs ever written in the hands of a master of his craft.
A professional. So much volume without moving his shoulders!
Henk is the MAN!!!!!! And he is sitting. Lots of power there!!!! And feeling!!!!! WOW!!!!!!!
And he was sitting. Wow Great breath control.

Very well said. thank you.
Another great reaction from you Olly !! about Henk...like we say in Greece: "Φωνάρα ο τύπος !!!" (Enormous voice the dude) !! Of course is Henk Poort...what else can you expect !!
amazing job for henk, for a classically trained singer to go to distortion takes a lot of confidence, and he nailed it
Henk did Disturbed's version of the song because he wanted to do something closer to Floor's music style for her. As an opera singer, the distortions were new to him but he did great!
Edit: what fnglert said. 😉
Showed this song to my mom last week, she loved it! :P
Right now in a talkshow Henk Poort, he is going to sing The Phantom of the Opera with Floor at the Nightwish concert in the Ziggo Dome in the Netherlands next year.
Very cool..

Very good points (as usual) regarding the original and cover versions. Also, Floor fangirling Henk is just, aaaawww!
I love this version. It seems coming out so easy .
He sang it this way for Floor.......... :-) I could not have said it better Olly......
Henk is awesome! I, too, would never have heard of him if it wasn't for Floor and her Beste Zanger appearance. Great show by the way. Thanks a lot OLLY!!!!!! More tears and More tears. SHIT!!!!!!!! You are awesome Bro!!!!!
I really liked this version. Henk is really good singer. And he did amazing job with this, trying something new (distortion).

This a performance that will not be forgotten quickly. Some many emotions....
The ............ best .............. version ............ever!
Henk did an amazing job. Henk had to practice the distortion for this song because of Floor. I liked it that he put it in the Phantom .
Yes! This is what I was hoping for!
wow right....🤯🤟😍
