- This is how I reassemble the differential on a Snapper rear engine rider. If you have any questions or comments please leave them in the box below and I'll get back with you. And until next time work safe have fun and we'll talk to you soon Jim
I think "Mike" meant what he said as a compliment. Being understandable is a rare gift these days.
Hey Jim, just throwing this out there. The gasket for that case is like $20 and they tend to leak anyway. I am over a year in with just straight permatex "right stuff". No leaks or anything.
Just watched it for the 2nd or 3rd time, You can only like it 1 x so I can't tell
I take notes and back it up and re-listen to parts so I think I take at least over an hour to get thru it
there is a lot of good information in this one. If a guy is going to take both boxes apart and add the new gaskets like you talk about you should, "if" a guy is going to change over to 90 weight gear lube oil. I think everything ( information) is finally sinking in. Like the hex flat washer against the hex then nylon flat then the fender/with bushing pressed in then another hex flat against the hex axle and a number of nylon flats as needed Hope I got that right
@@janbill79 i’ve got a lot of video series of taking differentials and chain cases apart that you could watch but if you get into a spot where you can’t figure it out just send me an email and I’ll try to walk you through it.
Jim get well soon. Thanks for your help and information.
Thank you again for your video very good understand very well I have a snapper I'm working on need to change the gasket now I know thank you Cajun land Church Point Louisiana
Hey Jim this video is the best example of putting the differential case together. Thanks for your time and experience. My location is Stone Mountain GA
Hi Jim, great information. I had a snapper 421616bvd that has a commercial rear end. What is part number for the left side bearing. Thanks
Hi Jim, thanks again for all your valuable information.
I have the differential apart in order to replace hex axle. I accidentally ordered the gasket for the chain case instead of the differential.
Would you ever just use rtv or permatex without the snapper gasket? This is for a 2010 33”.
Hey Jim, BJ here. Just a couple of things I thought I would add. On my model (3314520-BVE) there is a plastic washer, nylon hex (part no. 7010988YP) that goes between the hex shaft and the inside of the differential cover. It spaces the hex shaft gear so that it lines up with the larger gear (the one the bolt slides through), and keeps the hex shaft from raw-riding on the inside cover. Also, bought a new diff. cover from PartsTree (part no. 7037279YP). Found out that the bolts are self-tapping, so before spreading the gasket goo, you may want to pre-tap the cover with the bolts you have. I my case, since I didn't pre-tap them with the bolts, I just hand tapped the cover to the bolts I removed with the case together (post goo-spreading). Live and Learn. Thanks for the video, never would of got this thing back together without it.

Hi it’s Jim
Well glad to hear your starting to put it back together if you have any other issues or need some help let me know, talk to you soon Jim
Thanks Jim, appreciate all your videos...
Hi Jim,
Concerning the bushing- the replacements that I have are the right part number for my machine, but they don’t have the two grooves that you say allows gear oil to get in between the axle & bushing. Should I take a round file & make some similar to my original?
Thanks!
Yes I would. Jim
Hi Jim, what is the best lube for the hex shaft? I plan on putting new boots on also. P S. I really like your videos. Beset I have seen. John from West Michigan. Thanks
I just use standard Grease. Jim
Your videos are most thorough and helpful!👍🏻
Permatex makes a slew of products, could you please tell us what specific sealer you are using? One sealer that should not be used is silicone sealer on cork gaskets as it will cause the gasket to squeeze out. Thanks 😊
The tube says, form a gasket sealant number 2 non-hardening
That’s the only thing I ever use. Jim
@@jimjackson9381Thanks 👍🏻
Hey Jim., love your information on Snappers. I have a Snapper Series 24 28" deck with a 12.5HP Briggs & Stratton engine. You mention replacing the Snapper Lub from the transmission and replacing it with 80/90 gear lub. How do you get the old Snapper Lub out without removing the gear case covers or is it even possible? An old Hillbilly from Hot Springs Arkansas
Sky High
Hi it’s Jim
The only way I found that really works is to take them apart and clean them out, There is a few things you have to do before you can put 80/90 gear lube in your machine. The machine that I am rebuilding right now I am going to go over them issues and show you what you need to do to be able to use 80/90 gear lube in your differential and chain case. Jim
Hi Jim,
I purchased new axles and the long axle is entirely painted black. This doesn't make sense to me. The paint will just wear off and float around in the differential. I should strip the paint off right? I am considering stripping the paint and having it nickel plated and putting Oilite sleeves in the axle bearings for a closer fit. All the new mating surfaces like bushings and shafts have .01" clearance. This seems like way too much. The pinion gears and spacers have .02" clearance. Are they supposed to be that sloppy? How are we to know? Do you have reference materials with dimensions and tolerances?
Thanks
I wonder if I could order a complete drive assembly? My 28 inch has movement side to side. About a 1/2 inch. Starting to get a little popping noise in it sometimes
Well I’m sure you could but it would be expensive it would be a whole lot cheaper to rebuild the one you have. Jim
Jim I picked up a Snapper comet 28” complete rear axle with side panels. My snapper com 30” needs to be rebuilt. Can I install the 28” axle on my 30”?
Thanks, Mike
Yes it should fit the rear cases from 28 to 33 inch are mostly all the same. If you want to be sure you can measure it and compare the two.Jim
Jim You mention e-mailing you, but I never heard you mention it, or show it in any videos.
Michael Cerra
Well I’ll tell you what if you watch video number 315 and go to the description box below the video it lists both of my emails both of my PayPal accounts and it will have a list of all of my videos to help you find it easier and you can download that. Jim
Most people won't notice the .002 clearance, I'm a millwright, I know about .002.
Is it a good idea to use loctite on the threads of the bolts? Or is it not needed.
Jim, I've put mine together about 17 times and can not get it to work. Bolts are impossible to start, cross thread, or go in and the differential locks up within a half turn. Yours goes effortlessly together. What do you think is going on?
I even tried with 4 gears instead of 8 and it still doesn't work.
Michael Meredith can you send me some pictures of what you have to my email

Thanks Jim
Hello Jim
I am a new subscriber and really enjoyed your instructional videos. I followed your instructions to disassemble my rototiller. When I disassembled my differential I found that the main gear attached to the axle appears to be stripped. I also noted that my hex drive was not attached to the gear as it appears it was in your video. Not sure if that is an issue, maybe mine is different. I noticed that the machine you are working on is not the same as mine as mine is a walk behind rototiller. My question is if I order a main gear how do I ensure I get the right one. My model # is R8002B and Serial # is 55622532. Can I order my parts through you as I have confidence you will ensure I get the right ones. By the way I live in Canada not sure if that is an issue.
Thanks Dave
I’m going to have to know what brand this Rototiller is because I’ve never worked on a Rototiller snowblowers yes. Jim
Good morning Jim you may have answered this question in other videos but where is the model # located on those mowers, the one I'm working on has definitively scene better days so finding ID # is difficult when you don't know where to look first and thanks for these great videos.
Tim Pope
Hi Tim
Well there is about three different places depending on the year of the machine.
The oldest ones the labels were on the Front of the main case.
Then they started labeling them on the back of the main case.
Then they started putting the numbers on the tube where it enters the main case.
@@jimjackson9381 so just labels and no metal stamped # ?
Tim Pope
As far as I know it’s just a sticky plastic label I have never seen one that they stamp in the steel. Thanks Jim
@@jimjackson9381 Thanks !
Why couldn’t you put the thrust washers on both ends of the hex shaft?
It does have one on both ends of the hexagon tube. Jim
Hi Jim, what size deck belt do a old snapper have?
I would need your model number and what size of a deck is on your machine. Jim
Shame someone can't make an adapter to use real bearings. like maybe machining a recess in the bushing to press bearings in on each side.. or pressing in a small trailer bearing with a couple of c-clips to hold it in place.
Whats the arm on the lift yoke for? Just bought a non runner and that arm has jammed into the rubber disc. Dont see what that arm is even for.
Robert Clark
Can you send me a picture if it Thanks Jim
Jim Jackson I dont know how but its that round bar thing made to the opposite end of the lift yoke for the clutch. The spring hooks to one arm but that other thing does nothing that I can see but be in the way.
hey jim, a lot of guys wanted to know the year of their snapper riders and i found a link at tractordata.com they have all the model numbers from 1966-2014 and the date they were produced.with that in mind my rider is model number is 307x and it was built from 1968-1971,but still no series number for mine.if you have worked on any 1968-1971 snapper riders could you please steer me in the right place on parts tree for the series # that i need for my snapper.THANX! by the way great videos.
do you have a part number for the gasket?
jim white
The number I have here from Parts tree is 7028762YP and it’s called gasket, transmission that is for the differential. Jim
thank you love the videos
Hi Jim, my name is Willie from Patterson la
Can you please let me know how to make my Chain case and differential leak proof
Before I can tell you what to do in case I need to know which one you have send me some pictures of it and I’ll let you know what things you can possibly do. Jim
You can send them to my email which is
jimsfixitshop@gmail.com
Thanks. Jim
Anybody try "Super S Cotton Picker Spindle Grease "00" from Tractor Supply? Just got me a quart the other day. Only $5.95 a quart. Topped off my chain drive and differential cases.
(By the way, the label might not say anything about cotton pickers, as it apparently used to. The bottle I bought just had a big "00" on the front. Who knows, maybe "cotton picker" is too politically incorrect these days.)
I filled mine with it a few months ago, must have been low cause it took almost a full bottle for both. So far so good.
Yea and those damn little yellow bushing s in the hex tube are missing worn away and can't find those bushings any where on earf. Pissed me off. I really don't want to order a 50 .00 hex tube w bushings.
how the heck can someone give this a thumbsdown i just dont get some folks
Hey Jim wrote you an email! needing some help!
Where is your email address ? I can't find it .
Can I pu a smaller pulley on my rear engine rider snapper mower above the drive disc .to make it go faster ?
No, if you put a smaller pulley on the engine that will make the blade run slower you need to put a bigger pulley on the engine to make the blade go faster. My email is
jimsfixitshop@gmail.com
Thanks. Jim
