Buffy is the show that I look back on and think, "this is why netflix needs to stop cancelling shows after just one or two seasons". Imagine if Buffy had been cancelled after one season. So many TV tropes, experimental episodes, fight choreography and directing choices we consider the norm in shows nowadays would just simply not exist.
I think you can say that about any streaming service show. Or how shows only have 8-12 episodes per season nowadays. Shows aren’t allowed to have growing pains any more to find their footing. Thanks for the comment!
@@bcvideos_ We had mobile phones.... *(cell phones ) in mid 1990s and early 2000s. I think you mean "smartphones" which didn't really become popular until 2007
Buffy was also a big part of the trend towards tv shows surpassing movies in telling long in depth stories. Strong season long story arcs weren't common yet. By the time Walking Dead came along, it had become THE thing. In my mind I see Buffy as the blueprint for a TV vs. movie revolution.
Buffy spawned a whole revival in vampire and supernatural shows on TV, especially those targeted for the younger audience. Vampire Diaries, for example, took a lot from Buffy and Angel. Plus the Twilight movies took a lot as well.
I don't think so. Buffy did have an influence on TVD and True Blood as TV shows (they were originally books), but I give The X-Files more credit in terms of making the sci-fi/horror/fantasy genre more lucrative on TV. Sure, you have Star Trek, Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits, but they were cult shows.
@@Madbandit77 I’d argue Buffy and Angel are cult shows too. True Blood not as much, just because it was on HBO and it was popular because it was very mature. The Sci-fi genre is very popular but there are many shows that are still niche. Sometimes people perceive them to be bigger than what they are, just because they’re involved in the fandom. Thanks for the comment!
Buffy was a legendary show. I liked the whole idea of how Buffy was basically the superhero but didnt actually want to be a superhero...she just wanted a normal girl life cuz being the slayer involved a life of hardship and never knowing peace.
The Buffyverse shows are incredible. The metaphors used for real life situations are amazing. The show develops brilliantly over the seasons, and Angel is a fantastic spin off show whose best episodes are are amazing and easily match BTVS, and in many cases suprpass it. You will love Angel. The metaphors are really well done throughout the show. And thank you! I’m looking forward to starting Angel very soon. I’m sure it’ll be just as fun of a ride. Thanks for the comment!
I was put onto Buffy by two of my then-teen children so I was about 37 or 38. One of them had a slightly-pirated DVD of Buffy up to the end of season 2 which I watched and was hooked. I afterwards watched it weekly until the end. And I bought the whole series on DVD which I've not watched for a while but will definitely do. So, yes, I loved Buffy (but mainly Willow). It was tremendously well done. I agree somewhat with your rating of each season, there were peaks and troughs but every season had some excellent shows and storylines. It was great TV and still holds up really well.

Series creator Joss Whedon has said that the idea for Buffy came from all the horror movies he had seen featuring a helpless young blonde who would almost always be the first to die. He felt she needed a better image. Angel was originally conceived as nothing more than a weird guy who occasionally showed up to give Buffy vague advice. There were several ideas for his true identity tossed around, including that he was an actual angel who needed to complete a certain number of good deeds before being allowed back into Heaven, before his being a vampire was decided on literally while writing the episode with the reveal. thank you for this video!!! i just watched and finished buffy about a year ago and i fell in love with it and have been dyinggg to get one of my friends to watch it, but they refuse cause it's "outdated" and "cringe", which i can get, because that's what i was thinking all throughout season one, but if you give it the chance, the time period is one of the most lovable things about it, plus the characters and you cannot exclude episodes like "the body", "restless", "hush" and soooo many others, plus the metaphors behind it all, idk man, i just feel validated and everything you said about the show, positive or negative, i 100% agree with!!
I definitely recommend watching Buffy more than one time through - the show has so many layers, and I notice new things each time! My favorite seasons are 5 and 6, followed by 2 and 3 (Spike is what pushes 2 just a bit higher than 3 for me) then 7, 4, and 1. I am going make separate comments for my other thoughts to appeal to the gods of the algorithm!
I had watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the movie and remember when this show was announced. I originally watched just to see how bad it was going to be, to only fall in love with it. I believe Season 7 didn't wrap up things more because there were talks of possible spin-off shows with either Willow or Faith and the knew they were going to continue the Buffyverse through Dark Horse Comics.
Yep Angel was definitely a fan favourite and really deserved his own show. I liked his show...like Buffy it had some weak moments but overall it is an all time classic.
Great review, though i feel you missed the musical lovers by not mentioning "once more with feeling". That's right, musical lovers, there IS a musical episode , and it's REALLY good, havin (mostly) GREAT songs WHILE both sticking to the story AND moving it forward! But you won't understand a bit unless you seen the episodes that comes before, so... There's your carrot! :D
I enjoyed your review. Then again, I tend to enjoy reviews when they agree with mine! It's funny about the BtVS fandom - one can get a different permutation when when asking to rank the seasons. I understand why S4 is ranked so low by so many; however, it's my favorite season. Spike comes back and is hilarious. The best silent episode - in all of TV. The best dream episode - in all of TV. The best Buffy comedy (Something Blue). The last season of Christophe Beck's music. It's a great show and we can all find different things to like about it.
For sure, there’s bright spots even in the weakest seasons. Season 4 was just trying to juggle too many things and none of them worked for me. The two bright spots was Tara getting introduced and Spike joining the main cast.
I enjoyed watching the whole run with my two sons, then eight and twelve, during the first lockdown. It was my first viewing too, and I loved it. Nice introduction, but the idea that the first three seasons were 'Peak Buffy' is, I think, not one that most fans would agree with. To me, it only started to hit its stride during season three. Lastly, I'd argue that the first mention of Buffy's sister is one of the most truly shocking moments in television history.
Thank you for pointing out that the heroine Buffy has her flaws and that this makes her a three dimensional, relatable character. Often, somehow, writers fail to remember this important point. The lady is either an angel or an annoying bitch, but never reralistic. Not sure whom to thank for Buffy's progressive character writing, though.
I watched a few seasons quite while back, but never got around to finishing it, thanks for the reminder. I do remember that the intro was great yeah, my favorite was the first one, the one with Buffy in blue lights at the end, man it was badass. I feel like Buffy is on a same shelf with Charmed somewhere, same vibe and theme basically. That's another great one by the way, one of the best shows from the 90s
Definitely a great intro! I kinda like all of them for different reasons but the first two seasons are special. I guess I’ll have to look into Charmed. Thanks for the comment!
Nah , I think the worst was the second half of season 7 , totally unwatchable. The scripts are messy, rushed, like they were in hurry to finish, probably for the show cancelation
The appeal of Buffy didn't just lay in the story telling, but the show had characters every teenager could related. To put things in perspective, you had a scifi/fantasy show with managed to incorporate a dose of reality as characters delt with real life issues while fighting monsters.
Buffy theme song by Nerf Herder. Best ever. Greatest cast, crew and writers, I could watch this show 24/7 for a month and not get bored. In fact I have.
Just rewatched it again for the... idk... 10th time I guess. Still my favorite show, I grew up with this show. Btw, the story is continued in a comic book series.
Season 4 had a lot of issues surrounding both oz and Is Maggie Walsh wanting to leave the show to pursue other acting opportunity? So they had to do a lot of rewrites which is where tara comes in and maggie walls was supposed to be the season to be big bad but that got changed to Adam
Seth Green has talked about this and even elaborated on this more but as it turns out Joss Whedon originally wanted to keep him around however Seth felt his character was underused. As from that he was pursuing a film career which I can't blame him for since it's hard for TV actors to transition to the big screen.
An interesting project would be to produce the 'missing' episodes from season one[there were only 12, as it was a replacement, if it had been a full season there would have been 22 episodes], you would have to re-cast the core four[Buffy, Willow, Xander and Cordelia], my thought is to offer SMG the role of Joyce and perhaps bring back Anthony Head as Giles for continuity with the original series. I think it would be an ideal project for a limited series.
I initially watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer when I was 14 years old. I just re-watched the entire series at the age of 34 and it still holds up. For me, my favorite era is S4-S7. I loved Buffy maturing into a responsible adult and leader, Spike slowly becoming a good guy, Anya being hilariously inappropriate, Willow becoming a powerful witch, Xander finding success after a lifetime of being seen as a failure, and the complicated Buffy-Spike relationship. The early seasons are great, but the characters don't feel as fully evolved as they would in later seasons. Angel in particular is really bland up until the halfway point of Season 2. Not going to spoil anything as you said you haven't seen the spin-off yet, but I feel like Angel didn't fully come into his own as a character until he got his own show. I'm one of the few people who likes the Angel series more than BTVS, so you still have some excellent TV to look forward to.
The only issues I ever have with it is how easily adam and the mayor are taken out after the build up, I could use a longer fight scene but whatever, still a great show
Season 4 might have the weakest “big bad” storyline with the initiative, but there are some truly stand out episodes in season 4 too. Hush, Pangs, Something Blue, and a couple others.
Although it isn't commonly mentioned, the truth is that Buffy (which I love) was one of many shows that were produced at that time in an attempt to follow the tremendous success of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and its first spin-off, Xena: Warrior Princess. Buffy was a fantasy action show more than anything else, and prior to HTLJ, an action fantasy show full of monsters and magic and demoms and gods and swords and so forth, replete with humor a superheroes, really didn't exist. When everyone tried to do what Herc and Xena were doing, Buffy was one of them, and almost certainly was the most successful. Herc, Xena, Buffy and Angel have a special place in my head.
Eh.. maybe from the television studios point of view, but not from the writers or producers. The movie came out three years before Xena went on air, so the concept already existed. The action (while fun and a big part of the show) is always secondary to the characters and themes of the show. The monsters are all metaphors for the challenges we have to face in high school and growing into adulthood - the idea that high school is hell. One of my favorite quotes from the show is: "The hardest thing in this world is to live in it. Be brave, live" While Xena did have a great redemption arc, the themes and metaphors of the show never seemed to be the primary purpose of the show like they are with Buffy - granted it has been a long time since I have watched it, so perhaps I am misremembering?
@@Itmustbe_bunnies The studio's point of view is what I'm talking about, and the WB's point of view. I'm saying Buffy, the television show, was not created in a vacuum. It was a movie that wasn't very successful, and that no one expected to be anything after it came out. Half a decade later, amidst a slew of shows emulating Hercules and Xena (Tarzan, Conan, Robin Hood, Roar, Sinbad) they remade the concept to be more like what had become the trend.
I’ve been watching Buffy since I was 9 years old and it never gets old. It has some of the most fleshed out characters in tv , the writing is brilliant, and even though it is about vampires it is so relatable. There is no other show that can top Buffy for me . Also I ve met a bunch of the cast at cons and they are truly the nicest people ever as well!
Buffy, where it all began. How many series has it influenced or to put it bluntly how many shows since have copied Buffy, and none I don't think have been as good,it was such a great show, down predominantly to the writing and the character's.
I get why people dont dig season 4, but I like it. "Hush" is easily a top 5 episode of the entire show. And with episodea like "Fear Itself" and "Something Blue" theres definitely fun to be had. Personally Season 1 is far and away the weakest. I still love it, I grew up with Buffy. But watched with hindsight its clear Season 1 was very much about the show finding its feet. The special effects and fight choreography are pretty bad 😂. And having only 12 episodes the seasons arc is nowhere near as strong as all the following seasons, all of which had 22 episodes and dedicated more episodes and story to the overall season arcs. What saved season 1 is the writing and characters which even in the shows infancy were clearly its strongest points and gave the show traction and a fanbase to go forward.
Yeah I think some even were TV14 here in the states, but I was was just generally saying it’s a PG show. Especially for todays standards. Thanks for the comment!
Best TV show ever. Many think s5-6 better than s2-3. You talk about s123 as if they are of the same quality they are not, in everything I've seen thinks s5-6 better than s1. S4 suffered a direction change as actress playing the big bad decided to leave. Also, as Joss has pointed out s4 has some of the best episodes. Some think s7 is best. It's about power and leadership ans is more about the season arc than it is the story of the episode.
You know that the series is a continuation of the movie right? But a lot was changed in the movie from what joss whedon really wanted so he stepped back somewhere along production of the movie. But got what he wanted with the series.
Hate to say it but buddy please stop repeating yourself with the commentary. You've got a tendency to make a point, then restate it almost verbatim again and again. No hate, just feedback
I love all of the sesons, especially season 7. Seson 4 is the worst, no one liked Riley. But season 4 had some amazing episodes within it. But if I'm being honest, season 1 is my least fav. It's far more cheesy than the rest of the show and is just trying to find its groove which it doesn't do till season 2.
1:47 I do think that Supernatural would have existed without Buffy the Vampire Slayer because honestly, Supernatural reminds me more of the show X-files than Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Supernatural had way more X-files references in it than Buffy references, btw I loved all 3 shows.
The movie was not a flop, it doubled what it costed in the box office and sales. It was a really fun movie and a different take on the horror genre and it's actually cannon to the TV show. The tv show is better but for it's time the movie was pretty good imo.
Season four being the worst (it is) of the series is always interesting to me because it's got some bangers. I think it's the only season that there's an emmy nominated episode.
its sad that theres nothing that comes close to buffy or charmed these days anymore i think there never will be a show that comes even close to these 2 imo
Buffy the Vampire Slayer and it's spin-off Angel are 2 of my favorite shows of all time. Sadly, because of woke, we will never have another show like Buffy ever again.
We did get another show like buffy.. its supernatural lol... Its hard for me to accept but supernatural ended up being the better show of the two but it takes more time to get in its groove. Conceptually buffy is the better story and the first three seasons are the best...so buffy starts off as a 10 and ends like 3 and supernatural starts like a 5 and ends like 8-9
Agreed. Season 4, (or whatever had Riley and the military) was absolutely dreadful and should be viewed - NEVER! Much like the final season of Xena: Warrior Princess - its ONE episode - season 4 will have you questioning any loyalty to this show. Horrible season that has NO place in the Buffy-verse.
It’s definitely the worst season for the show. The one saving grace of that season was introducing Tara and Spike becoming a main cast member. Thanks for the comment!

Watch it again, watch it again....seriously, watch it again and again. I have watched it at least 100 times and I still pick up on new things.
Be brave, live"
While Xena did have a great redemption arc, the themes and metaphors of the show never seemed to be the primary purpose of the show like they are with Buffy - granted it has been a long time since I have watched it, so perhaps I am misremembering?
@@Itmustbe_bunnies The studio's point of view is what I'm talking about, and the WB's point of view. I'm saying Buffy, the television show, was not created in a vacuum. It was a movie that wasn't very successful, and that no one expected to be anything after it came out. Half a decade later, amidst a slew of shows emulating Hercules and Xena (Tarzan, Conan, Robin Hood, Roar, Sinbad) they remade the concept to be more like what had become the trend.
Interesting connection. I see where you’re coming from. Thanks for the comment!
It’s a top tier show, no doubt! Thanks for the comment.
I’ve never heard anyone say season 1 is better than season 5
Great. I finished Supernatural and loved it. Haven't really had a show that has a similar feel to it since, so this might do the trick nicely.
Hey, just watched this and ur reacher review and thought you might like the show “From”. It’s actually really good and is getting a second season.
I’ll have to check it out. Thanks for the suggestion!
I think a lot of people missed out on this when it originally aired due to the show's title. A lot of my friends still won't watch it because of this.
Hmm, that’s an interesting thought. Thanks for the comment!
The show wast pg - it was a 15 in the uk with a couple if Angel eps at 18! ☺️
People can feel how they want to feel. This is just how I saw the show. Thanks for the comment!
Both Buffy and Angel are the GOAT
You know that the series is a continuation of the movie right? But a lot was changed in the movie from what joss whedon really wanted so he stepped back somewhere along production of the movie. But got what he wanted with the series.
Hate to say it but buddy please stop repeating yourself with the commentary. You've got a tendency to make a point, then restate it almost verbatim again and again. No hate, just feedback
Season 4 episode hush was good
One good episode in a season doesn’t make the season good. Thanks for the comment!
The demons on Earth in the Buffyverse being hybrids of demons and humans, would a demon on Earth be someone or something to refer to these beings?
Season 4 is worst overarching story arch in the series but has the best individual stand alone episodes. Also the most light hearted
Season four being the worst (it is) of the series is always interesting to me because it's got some bangers. I think it's the only season that there's an emmy nominated episode.
Season 4 is the worst? Hot take, bro.
Not all episodes are PG
There is 2 more seasons.
As great as Buffy is, I enjoyed Angel even more. It's very bleak, but damn does it hit hard.
its sad that theres nothing that comes close to buffy or charmed these days anymore i think there never will be a show that comes even close to these 2 imo
REBOOT
Buffy had an amazing series finale.... at the end of season 6. Season 7 was an unnecessary jerkoff with a much weaker ending. Don't come at me lol
I’d go further and say season 5 was probably the best finale and they could have left it there. Thanks for the comment!
too true...I know a lot of ppl were dissatisfied with season 7
