64 years old this month ... woke up at 3 am ... worried about my mental decline, prayed, turned to my phone, looked up youtube ... this video was top of the feed! I am so grateful! Today is Sunday, 12:30 is Polar Plunge with a group of people much younger than me. Thank you for this timely video to keep me going, encouraging me to get outside, to keep my active mindset... regardless of the negative messages I receive inside my head. Reaching for graditude, playfulness, seeking adventures.
Actually @richroll most women experience the opening up of more purpose, more connection, less loneliness as “beauty fades”. We start to embrace what we always knew was true, but had to fight a headwind on, that our beauty is not in our looks or fertility value but actually in our compassion, spirit, fiercest, resourcefulness and ability to build and maintain relationship systems.
Then why, WHY ... do the vast majority of women insist on dyeing their hair?! WHY ... do women wear gobs and gobs of makeup when they are older to the point that they look like circus clowns? I don't see a lot of embracing there.
Moved from Los Angeles to rurul Austria three years ago, got a mountain bike and now I'm out there pretty much every day. Oh - I will be 68 soon. - What an amazing woman- thank you both! Peace from Austria 💙
me being tough broad: taking care of a struggling family business, sharing the care of elderly mom and supporting my kids when they need me. i run through the woods to relax. yes - you can and should have awe in nature---but can you in addition have awe in the everyday?
A few years ago I was in Ventura , Ca sitting by the ocean and saw about a dozen surfers out there, they were incredible. After a while they started getting out of the water and I noticed all these men and women had gray hair. They were seniors who didn’t let aging take away what they loved. It was very inspiring to me a senior myself. And yes they 60’s were awesome.
I’ve been a Rich Roll Podcast fan for many years. As I will be celebrating my 70 birthday next month, I resonated so strongly with this topic! Excellent, powerful and inspiring conversation! Thanks so very much ❤
I bought Gutsy Girl for many of my friends daughters, after hearing Caroline speak many years back. The story she told (on a previous interview) about seeing the love in a horrific situation in which a family died in a fire. She was able to deal with it by seeing how the mother embraced and protected the kids until the very end. I will never ever forget that story!
I have read many books, I listened to many RUclips videos by many of the world's leading gurus and health experts but nothing came close to “the hidden herbs” by anette ray. I recommend everyone giving it a read.
I worked at KPFA-FM in Berkeley, CA for many years throughout the 2000s. I loved how what came through the news department there for reporting led to a whole new level of experience that was life changing, not only for Caroline, but for many other people as well! Thank you so much for this interview!❤
Loved this interview! Caroline is so interesting. I'm 66 and recently retired. This reminds me that I need to try new things. Looking forward to reading Tough Broad. As always, another great Rich Roll podcast.
I’m 67. Spend time outdoors everyday but found my social, spiritual, challenging, game in soul line-dancing. Rooms full of women and a few men in 60s and 70s stretching our skills, challenging our brains and bodies, encouraging each other and laughing like kids. It doesn’t always have to be outdoors - not always practical. ❤
I've enjoyed this. I like the idea of regular small "adventures". Sometimes a small adventure is just a walk through streets in a neighborhood I've never walked through. It's an intentional exploration of something new outdoors.
That every guest feels like they're the first to say something is getting old. Every single person who has spoken about well being or aging talks about getting out in nature and also exercising. Also, there are reasons to understand the science.. Age is interrelated with context or your generation. Rich is correct about a lifetime of not encouraging sports and adventure although those of us that were hippies were able to be more adventurous. And those of us who care about our health have certainly got the message about walking and exercise. The problem about generalizing is that you don't get to see the individual differences. There are also lots of out of shape old men who did play sports when young. Thanks to Peter Attia for one, who has encouraged us to get stronger now so we can keep active in later years. My generation of women (75-80+) in the college town we live in that are well educated and middle class are doing something everyday. You also have to factor in ethnicity, and SES among other factors. Your guest seems to like to simplify, and thanks Rich, for all your comments. I know what I was capable of in my youth and am very happy to be able to do what I can do now which is definitely not the same. Comparison is the killer of joy and I have to laugh that she thinks 60 is old.
Essentially missing the point, namely that age is irrelevant when engaging and communing with nature and her respective elements. Bodyboarding, climbing, wild swimming, etc, exist in terms of the human form immersed in, flowing through and ultimately interacting with a particular element, age is not remotely part of that almost spiritual communion/connection. To highlight 'age' in this way is to emphasise 'difference'. The trajectory of life is fluid, like a river. Just be 'gentle', not 'tough', read your body and connect with nature, don't fight it. Forget the numbers and detach yourself from 'ego'.
Yeh 😀. What you said. There's a little voice in my head (my mother's 🙄) that says act your age... while I'm dancing till I'm breathless or singing along with great artists or flirting with a young playful man. But if I want to enjoy my life I have to ignore what the world says about being sixty five...or I would just sit with my head in my hands😒.
Baby, in the game of life- you get to choose which team you’re gonna play on! I learned how to ride a horse at 48, then to swim at 57 and as a twenty something ran the ropes course for an outdoor leadership program: sheer face repel, zip line and Tyrollean traverse. Ran under a six minute mile- steep incline, rocky terrain mile over and over again. “Zero athletic ability” (self limiting mind set) just as a matter of my word and surrounding myself with people who don’t take “no” for an answer. I wasn’t born into that conversation. I had no one close to model myself after. Do Something.

This woman is f-ing amazing! I remember making her a smoothie and being gobsmacked that the Baywatch lady was also a firefighter!, 😂 she was lovely about clarifying who she was! Inspiring and just awesome!,
I grew up being physically active in sports and the outdoors. In high school the boys had access to scholarships via sports …unheard of for girls. I was assigned spectator role. Years later I moved to the country and owned horses and I immersed myself in that world. Women around me were the hubs of their family and fully occupied in that. Now those women have been discarded (no one will say that out loud) and have no relationship with the out door world🤷♀️
69 yr old here. I don't need a parachute for kicks, I didn't need it at 20 either. I am packing for a camping trip. Most people my age wouldn't even consider that. Oh, and I homestead, no need for any more excitement or exercise.
Right. I’m in my 40s and love to travel the world. Most of what she does for excitement I have no interest in at any age, but I get her point about reinvention.
One more thing…..nearly 2 hours of conversation and the thumbnail is “They’re lying to us about aging”. Where is that conversation? Who is lying? Why are “they” lying? I’m really getting tired of these BS thumbnails.
This has to do with RUclips algorithms, unfortunately. If the creators don't pursue click bait tactics SEO gets bumped is my understanding. I've actually stopped engaging with many channels due to this drama. And who wants to share links w/titles like this? 🙄 it's embarrassing...
One very important topic that wasn't covered whatsoever in this episode is SEX and AGING. I'm a lad in his upper-50s with a hearty sexual appetite, who eats nothing but plants, no oils, very low daily fat intake, who also works out and runs before work six days per week, so I am quite lean (i.e., skinny) and full of incredible amounts of energy. Yet for the substantial amount of women I see on a daily basis in my age range, I see nothing but wrinkly, sagging, droopy, overweight women who I am not even remotely sexually attracted to. I'm positive that women looking at me see the same sort of wrinkly, graying, balding mess, minus the overweight factor. So I was really looking forward to hearing her discuss aging and adjusting to an unattractive body while still desiring sex and the frustration (which is putting it mildly) of a sexless life due to no desire of wanting to have sex with other elderly people. Here we are: All wanting sex but not wanting to have sex with others in our elderly age range of the upper-50s to mid-60s. It's quite the dilemma. 😥
@@jorgeromera3861 Hey, thanks much! It truly is meant to be a sincere comment, and it could have been an interesting issue to have explored on this episode. Maybe next time. 😃
@@Jim_L you are very, welcome. It is indeed refreshing to see people these days saying honestly what they think. Political correctness is so emasculating. I'm 60, started lifting weights when I was 15, work out seven days a week and understand what you say in your comment. Fortunately I have a beautiful girlfriend. It is usually said that men and women adapt their tastes gradually as they grow older. Maybe yes, but I'm not so convinced. Perhaps the inherent lack of energy of the elderly plays a role in this issue. But what happens when the elderly are strong and full of vitality? Should they limit their desires? Should they "adapt" themselves lowering their yardstick? Everyone has their own opinion, obviously, but if you are not the kind of man who decides to travel to Tailand seeking "other cultures", yes, it is a dilemma. And not a little one.
@@jorgeromera3861 Your most excellent comments and input on this topic is exactly what I was hoping would have come from this particular Rich Roll episode. He's upper-50s, and his guest here, Caroline Paul, is early-60s, so I think the two really could have delved into the issue of sex and aging in an interesting and enlightening way, which, in turn, MIGHT have led to some good comments from us viewers. We might have gotten a lot of different perspectives from the comments section alone from people in our age group. Hint, hint, Rich Roll, if you're reading this -- perhaps a future episode on this topic? 😉
