Chuck Andrews - A few points I'd like to make even though you are more or less normally right here. I might agree that you get SOME extra protections from termination in states that are at will, but I'm a Teamsters member in Local 2 which is based out of Montana. I've heard good thing about other locals, but my experience with this Teamsters local is abysmal at best, and borderline dereliction of duties at worst.
Montana is one of the few states that even without a Union an employer is supposed to have good cause to terminate you if you're not on probation. The issue arises when you have a Union that won't employ, or poorly employs the grievance procedures and ultimately arbitration. This is doubly bad in Montana, because normally you could pursue litigation and file a lawsuit for unjust termination in normal unrepresented jobs, but you can't even do that here.
You have to try and exhaust administrative remedies I.E. the grievance procedure even if you're terminated unjustly. So in a certain sense, if you have bad Union representation in a state like Montana, the Union is actually ironically protecting the employer from litigation claims that could otherwise be filed.

I hear union workers are far superior to non union workers so im curious why they would need extra protections if that was true .
A major point of the union is protection lmfao. If you dont have that protection then youre disposable. If youre not union and the company needs to do layoffs you have no job, if youre union and you get a layoff they relocate you in the company.
Everyone i know who was ever union got fired or let go , i have never been fired or let go as non union worker .
I didnt get vaxed for covid and never missed a day of work because of it many union workers did get fired for no vax .
