Trade (or Labor) Unions Explained in One Minute: Definition/Meaning, History & Arguments For/Against

  • Should you join a trade union, or labor union as it is called in the United States? Well, let's just say that as this video makes clear, there are quite a few arguments in favor of being a trade/labor union member, despite there being arguments against as well.
But while the arguments in favor of joining trade unions seem to outweigh those against when it comes to the individual, how do things stand as far as society as a whole is concerned?
Do trade/labor union-related frustrations tend to build up over time? For example, do other workers end up considering trade union members spoiled... perhaps even at their expense? What about politicians, where do they stand when it comes to this topic?
As the video makes clear, trade/labor unions have had a somewhat "complex" history as of 1794 when it comes to the US and the present comes with its own set of challenges. By explaining what trade unions are all about, how things work and why you should care, the video helps you pick a proverbial side in an informed manner.

You are wrong! "Labor" is NOT a substitute for "Trade" Unions. The skilled workers make more money.
The math of normal supply and demand has skilled workers shopping on the left side of that math chart. The skilled workers buy the product and services on the left side of the normal supply and demand math chart and the unskilled workers buy the product and services in the middle of the big X on the normal supply and demand math chart.
The left side of the normal supply and demand math chart is not limited to our crony capitalist shoppers. The predotory lenders utilizing a for-profit banking system. This would be griffin goods supply and demand math.

Where can he cut costs? Wages! The Union is necessary in fact to counterbalance the employers power. While no the employer is not some "enemy" that needs to be fought he will never have your best interest in mind and therefore needs to be counterbalanced by collective bargaining, through f.e. a union.

Maybe 100 years ago. For the largest part of the last century the line was already drawn, you have right to work states where unions haven't established power, and you have union states where you aren't allow to work without being in a union or having to give part of your paycheck to one. The vast majority of unions that exist today in the US have existed for more than 70 years. They are extremely influential power structures that control vast amounts of capital and are largely unregulated.

What they do expect you to do is not be argumentative, complete your job to basic standards, and not be calling in often. The OP is only right when the worker is a shitty worker. Employers, like all citizens in the United States, have the right to free speech. Although employers cannot prevent unions from soliciting to their employees or punish employees for supporting a union, employers can express their disproval of labor unions to employees. Employers can explain to workers why they dislike unions and how unionization might affect the company.
Labor Relations Act (NLRA) of 1935- This Act secures workers’ abilities to bargain as a group instead of individually. The NLRA prohibits employers from firing and disciplining workers for trying to organize labor! For the most part, employers cannot ban or discriminate against pro-union employees. If the employees want to be represented by a Union, they are free to make that choice.
Employers must negotiate in collective bargaining if requested
Both sides must negotiate in good faith, meaning that neither party can intentionally behave badly during negotiations
Employers cannot prevent employees from organizing
Employers cannot prohibit signs or symbols promoting the union
Employers cannot promise or grant benefits to bribe employees
Employers should not hold meetings about unions in a supervisor’s office
U.S. employers are willing to use a wide range of legal and illegal tactics to frustrate the rights of workers to form unions and collectively bargain. Employers are charged with violating federal law in 41.5% of all union election campaigns. And one out of five union election campaigns involves a charge that a worker was illegally fired for union activity. Using more comprehensive measures, employers were charged with illegally firing workers in nearly a third (29.6%) of all NLRB-supervised elections, a violation of NLRA Section 8(a)(3)! Employers are charged with violating NLRA Section 8(a)(1) by making threats, engaging in surveillance activities, coercing, disciplining, changing work terms, threatening to remove benefits, threatening to close plants, questioning employees about their union activities or membership, spying or pretending to spy on union gatherings, granting wage increases deliberately timed to discourage employees from forming or joining a union, retaliating or harassing workers in nearly a third of all union election campaigns! Employers were more likely to be charged with violating the law where there were larger bargaining units. More than half (54.4%) of employers in elections involving more than 60 employees (roughly 25% of elections) were charged with violating federal law. Beyond this, there are many things employers can do legally to thwart union organizing; employers spend roughly $340 million annually on “union avoidance” consultants to help them stave off union elections. This combination of illegal conduct and legal coercion has ensured that union elections are characterized by employer intimidation and in no way reflect the democratic process guaranteed by the National Labor Relations Act.
    www.nlrb.gov/about-nlrb/rights-we-protect/the-law/coercion-of-employees-section-8b1a
Far more U.S. workers want unions than have the benefit of representation today. In 2018, only 6.4% of private-sector workers were union members (BLS 2019). That stands in stark contrast to the nearly half (48%) of all nonunion workers who say they would vote for a union if given the opportunity-a 50% higher share than when a similar survey was taken in 1995 (Kochan et al. 2018). When workers are able to win union representation and collectively bargain, their wages, benefits, and working conditions improve. On average, a worker covered by a union contract earns 13.2% more than a peer with similar education, occupation, and experience in a nonunionized workplace in the same sector. Union workers are more likely to have employer-sponsored health insurance, and their employers contribute more toward those plans. They are also more likely to have paid vacation and sick leave. Union workers are more likely to have retirement plans, with their employers contributing more toward those plans than comparable nonunion employers do. Unions also create safer workplaces. And union workers are covered by due process protections, so that, unlike nonunion workers in the U.S., union workers cannot be fired “at will,” with no warning and for almost any reason.

In half of all union election campaigns employers are charged with violating laws (threatening, firing, disciplining, or retaliating against workers trying to form a union). We have weak labor laws as it is, unions are at record lows, and still millions are spent busting unionization. Netflix has a decent film on this, American Factory.

Or if you tell me that work conditions are poor as they are and improving them will lead to more productive workers I am going to improve them because I want more money. Or if you say that we need more security measures because people could get injured as they are working right now then I will implement them because I don't want to lose my best workers in an accident and I don't want to pay a funeral.
If you are a parasite that demand for more free time, more pay, more days off, less hours and less responsibilities, while at the same time you are trying to convince my productive employees that they should threaten to quit if I don't do what you say then you are a net liability and you should get the boot as soon as possible along with anyone that went along with your nonsense.

The missed aspect of union workers getting paid more than non union workers in the same organization is the effect of the prisoner's dilemma. Government employers as the main example have a fixed budget coming directly from taxpayers. The employer ends up making cuts from non-union workers in order to meet the demands of the union due to the bargaining power differential, incentivizing employees to join the union. at the same time, the employer will resist at every instant to prevent salary increases against the entire union whereas private sector employees will negotiate based on their individual merits.

I have a question you may be able to answer. I am a fan of a sport that has existed in the USA since 1968. The sport is "Motocross", (dirt bike racing off road on a dirt track full of jumps and other obstacles), used to be very much more free market than it is today. But intervention from Europe, (they really invented the sport after WW2), starting in the mid 80's, and now global environmentalists, (pushed a 4-stroke engine over the less expensive to manufacture 2-stroke engine), with much added regulation for emissions have driven the cost of a bike from $1,400 in the mid 80's, (rose from $800 in 1968-79, to $1,400 by 1984, which I consider a natural free market increase over time, the bikes got a lot better too) to over $10,000 now, with one 1/5 the bikes sold compared to the 70's. The sport is not supported by bike sales today, as much as it is on energy drinks. Now there is talk about a "racers union", including a fair wage, free health care/insurance, and even a pension. My question is, from the information I gave you, (I hope it is enough), how do you think a riders union will effect the health of the sport. IMO, it might finish the sport off in 10 years. What do you think?
    Thank you
    A guy from Michigan.

    • @OneMinuteEconomics
      @OneMinuteEconomics  4 года назад +2

Thanks a lot for dropping by but the thing is, it is difficult to tell at this point because it all depends on the specifics associated with the union in question. How aggressive is it? How constructive, if at all? The list could go on and on. But as someone who lives in the European Union, I'm the first to admit that EU bureaucrats oftentimes take things too far. Enough to put an otherwise popular enough sport to its knees? Not necessarily but perhaps enough for a "perfect storm" situation to eventually emerge :(

Ideally a balance would be necessary between pro-union and pro-employer laws. If the laws are too much in favor of the unions, it hurts the companies, productivity goes down and it cuts into the gross domestic product that sustains the economy. If the laws are too much in favor of the employer, the workers get screwed over and society becomes less sustainable sowing discontent with more people having less money to contribute to the economy. Unfortunately, the US labor laws to this day remain too much in favor of the employer with left-wing politicians too feckless by design to do anything about it.

@@OneMinuteEconomics Running businesses has never been my strong suit, but ideally they would be measures that are for both sides. On the employees side, they are paid livable wages with a decent length weekend, given decent benefits like Medical coverage, stable employment, the opportunity for overtime, and are minimally stressed. On the employers side, they are permitted to work their employees within reason, able to terminate employees for just cause, and will not be obliged to pay their employees more than a certain percentage of profits within their company. CEOs don’t need to earn 100 times more than their workers, but they should still be making enough money that benefits everyone under them, and not just make the money for themselves. One shouldn’t reject success however as too much pressure on the employers could lead to brain drain and corporate exodus, which would be a new set of problems that’d hurt our economy.
At least that’s my take on it.

    • @OneMinuteEconomics
      @OneMinuteEconomics  3 года назад +1

Sensible ideas, with one important remark. After coming across more than a few ultra-successful entrepreneurs, I have to say that in many cases, I believe a visionary founder/CEO deserves even 100x more. If only because in pretty much all situations I for one have withessed, executing their vision involved essentially putting their lives on hold, risking everything financially, submitting themselves to debilitating levels of stress and so on. In the absence of asymmetrical rewards and especially given today's context of demonizing high-earning CEOs, I feel that there would be too much in the way of disincentives and not enough in the way of incentives associated with this path in life. Nowadays, there is an ultra-strong healing and mindfulness trend: learning to be happy, saying no to stress and so on. Yet in the absence of the occasional degenerately ambitious founder/CEO and the job creation potential thereof... many of those who currently hate executive types would be without a job and thus, anything but in a good position to seek happiness and deploy mindfulness. I know I am not winning popularity points with such comments, but this trend of hating CEOs has gone a bit too far in my opinion. Not referring to your comment by the way, which was more than reasonable and well-articulated. I'm talking about the broader trend :(

Unions can be good or worse. For a worker with unfair employers, it's a blessing. For good employers where employees want more every time to the point where it can put you out of business, it's very bad. A smart company that has a bad union should always have a month's worth of back up revenue, have connections to hire non union employees and fire the union workers altogether. Several companies have done that and fared very well.

So on paper it looks as if the workers are getting more money. Trickfuckery. All i know is most union benefit packages are over 20 bucks an hr and they can retire at 62 or earlier with a pension and annuity. Unions only make up about 7.5% of the workforce today with more states going "right to work" which is "right to work for less". Rep @ Dem are crushing unions as we speak glad I am retired and living the dream. I put 24yrs in and retired at 56 1/2 yrs old. Good Luck 👍 glad to hear your doing so well. Well I'm the last person you would want to talk to about Unions. I can till you this. You will always be able to come up with what you perceive to be a good wage - IT workers c'mon man ha ha there average pay is like $20 per hr. A union Electrician in Wa state is like $48hr a Boilermaker is $40hr a Pipefitter is over $50hr. Hell a Teamster UPS driver makes $30hr or more. And that is just there wage THERE benefit package which includes there annuity pension vacation pay health insurance ect is way over $20 an hr. Each of the three trades I mentioned have 4-6yr apprenticeship programs that pay as you learn. Do they have dues yes do they take 5-6% out of your weekly pay check yes. But let me ask you this. If I told you, you could live and work anywhere in the US and make 60 to over 100k a year but you had to give 3,600 to 6,000 out of that money would you do it? Having to work far away from home at times is not for everyone. Being in a Union is not for everyone. I did it at age 32 1/2 and retired at 56 1/2. Full retirement was 58. I did it for 24yrs. Employers have to base the wage on something and if a Union worker gets $50 a hr a non union knowing the whole union package is over $80 an hr can pay a non union worker $60hr and still under bid the Union contractor for the job. In the end like I said before - when they get rid of the unions everyone can all work for $5hr.

Given the very tricky context we find ourselves in, emotional responses are to be expected. When someone makes a harsh emotion-laden comment, I always try to understand that a personal tragedy might lie behind those words, for example. I then remember my own down days and that helps put things into perspective. I've had great results here on this channel when, unlike most folks who like to be controversial/edgy, I deployed the exact opposite approach and even tried to empathize with those who criticized me in the harshest of terms. We're only human, after all, even if it sometimes feels we're losing just that :(

I guy said to me he would kill for a 30 dollar union job, I told him 30 dollars ant shiii t to me , I got a brain, no need for union, or snitch or harm nobody. Some people would do harm for a p of s job, and at the end they find them selfs still broke because the brain part was the issue the how time for them.

@@OneMinuteEconomics no one forces anyone into any job. It is a mutual agreement between an employer and employee with an agreed upon wage. For a group of employees to band together to go against the person who hired them in the first place sounds quite ridiculous.

@@nickhofstetter7640 What a stupid take devoid of any reason and any sense of understanding of the world. Do you know why union are a thing in the first place ? They are there to give power to the workers that otherwise DONT HAVE ANY !
      There is no mutual agreement.
Do you really think people would want to work at a job that keeps them in poverty ?
If the only choice you have is either working 2 jobs or going homeless then you don't have any say in the negotiation table. Compagnies know that, so they can afford to say fuck off and take the other desperate guy looking for a job. JUST DON'T WORK IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT LOLOLOLOL ! WHO CARES IF YOU GO HOMELESS OR LIKE LIVE IN A SHITTY APARTMENT WITH NO FUTURE !
Its like you assume that workers have any power. There is no mutual agreement if the worker is forced to accept the conditions given to them.
NOBODY wants to live in poverty. Compagnies can afford to pay their workers more but don't do it. WHY ? Because they know that workers individually have 0 power.
Compagnies and big corporation work together to keep salaries low. Just look at how much they pay to campaign against unions.
People would never take shitty work benefits/salary. They agree to work in these kinds of jobs BECAUSE THEY DONT HAVE A CHOICE. The one in power is not the worker but the employer.
8 hour work day, 40 hours a week, abolition of child labor (even if it still exists in the usa), women being able to work, parental leave etc... Exists because of labor unions.
Any worker could have more. Every corporation/compagnie can afford to give more. No worker individually has power. Every corporation/compagnie has more power than the worker.
Unions are there to force a standard and give a voice to the worker. And it needs to be there because otherwise, its open season for exploitation.
No unions = no power. History has shown that.

@@simonpitre7978 You know what they say, hide and go seek for a grand a week. The good union workers break their backs for the same position guys playing with their tools. Probably would take a couple months to get him fired, boom, hire another one. Same thing over and over. Unions are mostly good and all but there are some private sector jobs that actually pay competitively with room to move up. Lot more running room when it comes taking time off, breaks, showing up on time, going home early, etc.

Non union members do pay for union members benefits indirectly through tax dollars going to unions and unions being exempt from anti trust laws and therefore holding labour monopolies through the power of the state
