  • NASA Night Sky Network members joined us on November 18 when Trina Ray of NASA/JPL discussed 40 years of exploration by NASA's two Voyager spacecraft, and how they continue to discover incredible science and set even more records 30 years after their last planetary flyby.
    About Trina Ray
Trina is an astronomer and systems engineer at NASA s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where she started her career with a bang - working on the Voyager Neptune Encounter in August of 1989. She is currently the Investigation Scientist for the ice penetrating radar instrument on NASA’s newest flagship mission - Europa Clipper. Along the way she was on the Cassini-Huygens Mission to Saturn (JPL/NASA) for over 20 years specializing in planning the science timelines of all the Titan flybys, but also working up to the Cassini Science Planning and Sequencing Team Deputy, the team that coordinated all the science and uplinked all the commands to Cassini. She has been a technical group supervisor. Trina has received numerous awards, including a NASA medal for Exceptional Service and the prestigious Bruce Murray Award for excellence in education and public engagement outside of normal job duties. She is an active public speaker for NASA, invited to give many talks around the nation.

Hello! I am a teenager. And I want to be an astronaut. Can I know what are the most important requirements physically. Actually I already searched the internet but couldn't find anything much appropriate. I'm not very fit, I'm a girl. A 14 yrs old thin girl. Please reply and clear my query. Thanks!

Well I would begin by suggesting joining the airforce and if you have the vision the intelligence and the wherewithal to pilot a jet, to do that. Or become some sort of astrobiologist, biologist, anthropologist and studies of that nature. you'd also have to be in very good physical shape and I mean top because you'll have to withstand a massive amount of g-forces... being prior service myself I had the vision to actually pilot and aircraft even a jet I was told but I went into the wrong branch. They only pick the best of the best. Good luck.

Radhika Malviya I would also suggest if you have any sort of ADHD or flat feet or are overweight in any way to go ahead and start working on that and to try and get rid of any evidence that suggests you had any kind of condition like that. Also if you've had any broken bones or have any metal in your body, that will also be a disqualification, including, but not limited to, if your teeth are in bad shape, any sort of learning disability and you're going to need top grades and I mean 4.0 grade point averages and some sort of college credits along with that.

There is a number of things that require perfection and in perfect order for you to truly have a chance and be considered... Good luck, seriously. PS. Don't ever give up on your dreams because you only get one shot at them.

Radhika Malviya I’d also add. Being 14 you have a ways to go. A lot can change in 5 yrs. especially your body. So don’t knock yourself down now your just starting to grow into an adult body. This is a gawky time in your life physical wise. So, going forward. Think always positively.
Keep fit. Partake in physical outdoor activities. Get the best grades you can. Always strive to be the best and always help those less fortunate than you along the way (it builds character).
Agreed it helps to study the sciences as one would think this is what we’re going into space for but in my limited opinion I think we have been in space a lot longer than we think and a lot further along than we think. You know, secrets must be kept. Anyway, we may need to be going into space soon just to colonize other planets as we discover them. Think about that. Your at a wonderful age. The future is going to be so awesome for you. I think you’ll start seeing what I mean over the next two years.
