  • Our cycle on The Trans Pennine Trail from Aintree, along the Liverpool Loop Line, to Widnes, Warrington, Sale, Stretford, Didsbury, Stockport, Hyde, Mottram and eventually Glossop. If we learned anything, it is that trying to cycle from Merseyside via Cheshire, Greater Manchester and eventually to Derbyshire and The Peak District is too much on NCR 62 in a day. It took us 11 hours and that is only when we decided to eventually cycle on the main roads 11 miles from the end. It's a bit of a disaster movie.

Britain's cycle paths are a total bloody disaster, simply because the motor car is encouraged and cycling discouraged. You're both flamin' heroes bashing on and completing your ride, well done and many thanks for sharing...

Aintree to Glossop on bikes, that is a hell of a distance to pedal!. Well done and thank you for a great video about your trip...

Very enjoyable, thanks for taking us along with you. I often pull a trailer with my bike and find far too many obstacles on the NCR's if you have more than two wheels and end up on roads most of the time. Liked, subbed and rang your bell 🙂

that's a fair old ride in a day. Done Formby to east warrington, that was enough. Really hope they improve the signage especially round Sale.

Really enjoyed that, Ian. I rode from Ormskirk to Dunham Massey last weekend following much of the same route, except via St Helens (Sankey Canal - which I do recommend) instead of Liverpool. The sections around Warrington I totally sympathise with. There is too much missing signage, too many barriers, and too much rough stuff. Such a shame, because its a lovely route.

Unfortunately the TPT is a bit of a nightmare, we cycled it about 10 years ago, we had the maps, on the map is makes out it was 40 miles from Liverpool to Glossop, but it was 64, it felt like it went on for ever with heavy panniers. The biggest problem is how poorly Signposted it was, once you are past Fiddlers Ferry and it sounds like it still is, we kept looking at the map, phones weren't as good then either, so after a late start, we didn't get to Glossop until about 9:30pm at night and it was dark.
In the towns and cities across the country the amount of obstacles was bad too, which is shame as if you could navigate it easier, it be a good route. I often ride to Runcorn Bridge or to Fiddlers Ferry. The route to Southport is however better than it used to be, well done!👍

When I started out on the bike I loved trails & towpaths, but now I’m mostly on roads. You can go much further exploring & it’s easier to navigate. Beginners I’d recommend traffic-free routes until you’ve improved your balance and confidence

Looks like you missed the towpath along the Bridgewater! Fiddlers Inn is half way to Warrington from Spike Island. On a cut of land between Mersey and canal. How did you miss that easier route? Ignore satnav and ask the locals!

You should have done this in parts rather than as one whole ride. If it was me I'd probably be in bed for a few days recovering. But you did very well . The fantastic views on other side of runcorn bridge where Runcorn hill and further down frodgem hill and Helsby hill. And also Elsmeer port.

Your video was great though. 👍

The ziggurat that gets you up to the Bridgewater canal is probably unique in Britain. Bridgewater canal is the oldest industrial canal in world history!

I think you were a bit ambitious doing that much of the TPT in one day - we did Southport to Warrington in one day, Warrington to Glossop the next and really enjoyed it with time to stop and look around. I Know it *should* be quicker but the TPT suffers a bit from being one of the first long-distance routes to be put in and while we've learned a lot about how to make such routes more cyclable it can be hard to persuade the local authorities to go back and re-do routes when there is so much more to be done elsewhere. One thing we did was to take the Manchester Cycleway (NCN6/60)which follows a more direct route across Manchester and it's easy to pick up the TPT again at Reddish. It would be great if you could email info@transpenninetrail.org.uk and let them know where you took wrong turns so we could beef up the signage. Simon from Friends of the TPT.

The tpt is a great trail but don't be afraid to tailor it to your needs...there's far too many sections that go astray for no good reason. As with a lot of the national cycle network there's a habit of routing you a long way around to avoid a stretch of road only for you to join that road anyway.
