  • This is a 4 door hatchback. You should disconnect the battery when replacing actuators in case you have wires that might short. Maybe someone has been up to some monkey business before you got the car. I'm not sure whether things are exactly the same in the two door or sedan versions. All of my door actuators finally became unreliable at 276,000 km. Apart from the water pump and a set of brake linings, it's the only maintenance I've had to do beyond fluid changes. Such an amazing little car (my other is a 1996 4runner with 427,000 km). It paid for itself in 5 years from the gas savings compared to driving the 4Runner every day. So, the Echo is my "new car".
Not a great job on the video, production, but it's just posted to give a guy some idea of what to do as I didn't find anyone bothering to change out the actuators on such an old car. I'm sure there are a couple of people out there who would like to know what's involved. It took me about 45 minutes per door, but I was learning and videoing as I went.
Put window all the way up and make a mental note of the hand crank position if you have manual cranks (about 2 o'clock position). When you remove the panel, use 2 hands on the bottom of panel, pull out to remove the nylon clips from lower door hole sheet metal, and then gently lift door panel up so that the top lip of the door clears the metal. Then it will come right off.
The 3 plastic "Philips heads" in the door panel seem to turn out of the base creating a gap. Then, very gently grab them with a needle nose and pull them out or pry out gently with a screw driver. When you put them in, put the needle nose between the base and the screw head to keep the gap until inserted into the sheet metal underneath. Then just push the heads in and that will expand the base and grab the underlying sheet metal. The styrofoam insulation/impact block needs to be removed with the two 10 mm bolts.
The mirror remote cover comes off by just grabbing it and rocking it towards you. It's just a friction fit. When you reassemble the hand grab into its pocket, make sure the slant is towards you and you seat the protrusions into their receivers and check that you can see the screw hole in the center before putting screw in. Tighten just snug.
When you put the door actuators on, put the retaining clip in position and make sure you orientate the handle where you want it (usually goes about 2 o'clock position). Then just push it on the splines. You don't want to have to remove it again to reposition it....that's the hardest part of the job!

ASIN: B07F2TN3DJ about $27 USD on Amazon for all 4...I think the dealer wanted something like $400 and these are exactly the same as far as I can see!
