THPS changed my life - literally. I was a kid who was labeled emotionally handicapped - couldn’t be in classroom with the “regular kids,” only had 2 friends where were in the same special class as me and no clue how to handle my anxiety and anger. One day by happenchance, my mom brought home Pizza Hut and along with that came a PlayStation Demo disc - THPS was on there. I still remember till this day, starting the demo and the first thing that comes was a short montage showcasing real people, pro skaters, doing actual tricks, I remember I was so mind blown, it hit me like a ton of bricks and that immediately knew that was exactly what I wanted to do. Fast forward a couple of years later and I got sponsored, and had an army of new friends that I never would of had if not for skateboarding and my anger and anxiety issues were almost entirely gone. Most importantly it taught me the importance of perseverance, self-reliance, and drive. From skateboarding I also adopted an interest in photography, film making, design, etc., which eventually lead me to a career in the creative and strategic sphere. So thank you Tony Hawk for changing my life for the better. 👍🏼

Tony Hawk is one of the most underrated legends. Him and his games literally helped destroy the narrative that blacks who liked skateboarding were "white" or "uncle toms" most people dont realize this. Blacks used to get bullied by other blacks for skateboarding at a much worse rate before these games.
When will black people finally stop hating other blacks people for liking stuff? Took long enough for black people to get over their distaste of rock music
There is a really cool and awarded documentary called: Bones Brigade Autobiography. Sure it’s not ONLY about Tony but also covers other amazing legends of that team like Rodney Mullen, Steven Caballero and such, just like Last Dance does for the Bulls
My FAVORITE game for PS2 was Tony hawk underground, I use to get blisters trying to “manual”. Good times. I met Tony Hawk by accident once while I was on lunch in my work break room, and he accidentally walked down to the basement. I never got the chance to let him know how much of a fan I was because I didn’t wanna be weird/was nervous but I thought it was a hilarious/random way to meet someone who was an inspiration in my early teen years (punk/skate era)
Tony Hawk’s influence is still so understated; a whole generation of people who dont skate, but know a handful skaters tricks and new music. As a latino kid who knew nothing about skating before the games, I truly love the games, music and experience of it all and by extension the skate culture.
There was a long time when I only had a Pizza Hut demo disc with one level and one song. The Warehouse listening Superman over and over. To this day, it's my most listened song...by far.
I've always looked up to Tony Hawk, but this interview takes it to a whole new level. People hating on him for breaking the rules and he just couldn't be bothered to give a shit. What a legend.
*Rodney Mullen - one of the greatest skateboarders who ever lived - has to appear on JRE in the future - he just has too. He's an extremely intelligent and a fascinating character ~*
i've watched a lot of tony's interviews lately and i think people has called him a sell out so much that maybe he thinks he is now , he says the same exact things in every interview 😄 tony, your a legend you ain't gotta explain shit bro
even if he was a "sell out", he sold out for the kids! he was a legend to so many youth and inspired so many of us. it wouldn't have been possible without getting the exposure he got from the tony hawk pro skater games.
Sure Hawk has made tens of millions on game, clothes, decks, and promotions. But he has given so much back to the community in building skateparks that I can't call him a sellout. If he made all that money and didn't do shit with it or give back to the community that would be a valid argument. But he has done so much for the sport that I can't fault him for ending up rich along the way.
Whoever called him a sellout is an idiot ye innovated skateboarding make it real and mainstream x games wouldn't be as big with out him fr street skate competition was him and very ramps so ppl saying sellout is retarded
Tony Hawk is like “I can’t believe I’m on Joe Rogan!” and I’m like “What? You’re THE Tony Hawk. I can’t think of anyone else who should be on Joe Rogan.”
Mate quitting skating is still my biggest heart break. Spent a good 300euros on a deck to quit 3 months later. Was landing 360 flips and double kick flips at 13. Shouldn't of ever quit convinced id be sponsored by now 😂
I can guarantee you would do the same thing if you were in his shoes. Also don't blame him and Spotify for being broke and not being able to afford another subscription
Not really, there are plenty of really shitty and disgusting people that have gotten super rich or famous, such as the Kardashians or Mark Zuckerberg. Then you have folks like Chris Brown that beats women or Cardi B that drugs and robs people, and they're doing just great with their many millions of dollars. Then you have Ellen who apparently treats her employees like trash. So yeah, I think there are plenty of crappy people that aren't humble at all that are still incredibly successful.
Remember when he dropped his skate game and it said “no loading” and we all thought it was so damn cool that a game had no loading lmao, but the funny part is it had a screen that said “no loading” for like 5 minutes lmfao
When I saw Tony Hawk, these lyrics came to mind: "here I am, I'm getting older all the time. I'm getting older all the time. Feeling younger in my mind."
One of the greatest things I ever read in Tony’s book (occupation skateboard) was when he mentioned that he would sometimes get angry even when taking gold. Unless he skated to his standard he was upset. Regardless of where he placed. I recommend anyone to read that book. It sheds a lot of light on Tony.
Shit, I don't feel bad for any of those guys though. They ruined their careers with booze and drugs and Tony became an innovator and an icon. It's not his fault that Duane Peters couldn't put down the meth pipe.
@@OrunitaVivi I agree. That's my point exactly. And Tony still likes Duane too. And I will give Duane props for the fact that he admitted that he was a douche to Tony back in the day and that Tony is one of the greatest skateboarders ever.
Damn that’s crazy, Tony trying to explain to joe the significance of style in skateboarding. It’s so hard to explain to a non skater why or how style is important as it’s not a measurable thing. That’s why skateboarding is art, the best skaters are often not the most skilled ones, but those who have good style and creativity, it is very subjective and individual.
90s and early 2000s skate era was its golden years, I don't think it will ever be that great again. Used to see people skating ALL the time all over the place and now, you literally see ZERO people outside at all pretty much.
Yea all kinds of life skated at that time it was really cool. Now technology really gripped today’s generation of kids to the point where they’re not fulling able to experience their childhood by going out and doing activities with their friends. It’s pretty sad

I come from skateboarding and the thing about Tony is that he looks, sounds and acts like a normal everyday guy but he's almost like a robot. The level he's able to skate on a vert ramp at freakin 50,just shows wha'ts he made off. He's insane. The drive inside of him is crazy. He can go to that spot even now when he proved everything. Oh,and everybody in the industry who called him a sell out, should be thanking him everyday if nothing else than for that video game. That brough so many new kids to skateboarding, multiple generations now. I started skating because of tony hawk pro skater 2,later on,kids around me started to skate becasue they saw me skating. Kids that never even played that video game. So much more product was sold just becasue of that game and it's showing results to this day.
Tony hawk's underground was the best video game ever. Story gameplay visuals soundtrack bloopers characters tricks dlc cheat codes. Everything you wanted.
I think Activision saw how that new skating game “Skater XL” is coming out and saw how much positive feedback is getting and their like oh shit we should do something! Let’s remake THPS 1&2 that would hook people and bury Skater XLs clout

I met Tony in 1991. I was 10yrs old and standing at the top of the YMCA vert ramp. I introduced myself and told him that I have never seen a McTwist in person. He said "Stand right there." And pointed me towards the edge of the coping. He dropped in then blasted a perfect McTwist over my head. It was one of the coolest things that someone has ever done for me. I doubt he will ever read this but if he does I just want to say "Thanks Tony. You have always been a solid dude." On a side note, my mom happened to get in a photo of him skating that was used on the cover of TWS. She is also in his Hook-Ups video part. Way to go mom, you fulfilled both my dreams and you don't even skate.

Him and his games literally helped destroy the narrative that blacks who liked skateboarding were "white" or "uncle toms" most people dont realize this. Blacks used to get bullied by other blacks for skateboarding at a much worse rate before these games.
He’s not underrated fool
Kareem Campbell being in those games had to be super important for black skaters.
@@guy5140 ya he's not really underrated in one respect but in the respect im talking about he/his games is.
@@DKC_Returns I never skated but it definitely was good as a 10 year old kid to have someone in pro skater two I could see part of myself in

The Michael Jordan of alternative sports. Would love to see a “Last Dance” level docuseries on Tony Hawk’s rise in the late 90s/early 00’s! 🍻
Him and Dave Mirra
There is a really cool and awarded documentary called: Bones Brigade Autobiography. Sure it’s not ONLY about Tony but also covers other amazing legends of that team like Rodney Mullen, Steven Caballero and such, just like Last Dance does for the Bulls

It's called skateboarding. Not "alternative sports".

I've always looked up to Tony Hawk, but this interview takes it to a whole new level. People hating on him for breaking the rules and he just couldn't be bothered to give a shit. What a legend.
Well done Tony... Grateful, humble, still so positive about the space. Thanks for your awesomeness and role modeling :)

i've watched a lot of tony's interviews lately and i think people has called him a sell out so much that maybe he thinks he is now , he says the same exact things in every interview 😄 tony, your a legend you ain't gotta explain shit bro
even if he was a "sell out", he sold out for the kids! he was a legend to so many youth and inspired so many of us. it wouldn't have been possible without getting the exposure he got from the tony hawk pro skater games.
Hes not a sellout, he's made so many skateparks and shit. Dude has done more for the sport than anyone.
I can’t think of anyone else who should be on Joe Rogan.”
and Joe is losing his mind because Tony Hawk is on his show haha.

Definitely. Don’t know how many falls I took thanks to Tony lol
More people skate because of Tony Hawk. Whether inspired by his skating, or his fame and money paid for their local skatepark to be built

It’s almost like being humble makes people more successful.
Teams always work better. Your an asshole you won’t have much people hoping you win.
Makes them more likeable for me anyways.

One of the greatest things I ever read in Tony’s book (occupation skateboard) was when he mentioned that he would sometimes get angry even when taking gold.
