My KTM is Too HEAVY! Here‘s How I Fixed It…

  • With a wet weight of 230 Kg, the KTM 1090 Adventure was one of the lightest large capacity adventure bikes of it's time. But that doesn't mean that it's light enough to take on the trails. Adding hard luggage, crash protection, tankbag, sat-nav, jacuzzi etc... quickly sends the scales skywards and makes the possibility of having to heave all of that heft out of the hedge a simply terrifying proposition!
    So I've decided to see what I can do to the 1090 in order to shift the scales in my favour. Nothing is out of bounds and I'll be delving right into the belly of this fine beast to see where every single gram can be saved!
    Can you guess the final wet weight before the end of the video??
    ** In my various witterings and ponderings, it seems I've become confused about the weight of the Yamaha T7. Apparently they actually weigh 205 Kg wet, so take my comparisons with a pinch of salt! It's possible I took the World Raid version by accident, which is 220Kg wet and possibly a better comparison as it has the same sized 23 litre fuel tank as the 1090!

    I have a 2017 KTM 1090R for fast pavement rides and easy off-road trails, and a 2023 KTM 350 EXC-F for difficult and technical off-road trails. After 50+ years of riding, I prefer having two dedicated bikes, because there is no way one bike can do everything well. Great video, thanks for sharing!

      TBH David, it’s better than stock, but still not great. I fitted the MRA spoiler, which made it a tiny bit better still, but it’s still not as good as I’d like. The air is a little bit cleaner, so less buffeting, but it still fires a wave of noisy wind directly into the middle of my helmet. If i were 6“ shorter, it would be wind free, if i were 6“ taller, my head would be full in the wind but also much quieter.

      It really makes me wonder a bit what exactly was going on at KTM. Obviously they took the 1190 and updated it to make the 1090, but seem to have done it in an incredibly lazy way. Weird when they do proudly announced that they had saved 10kg over the 1190. It could have been 15!!

    I know for purpose video, it is ok, but what you are doing there, is not doing much at all. Taking parts off and cuting 5kg from the bike, doesnt mean much. Imporve your offroad skills, then the weight wont be a problem. Or, get a lighter bike and your problem is solved. Good luck

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  Год назад +1

      5kg was just what was in the IKEA bag. In total it was over 12kg of weight saving. I can improve my off-road skills until the cows come home, but I’m still going to have to pick up the bike at some point. And 12kg less than stock is definitely enough to notice. Obviously a lighter bike will solve the weight issue, but sadly I’m 6‘4“ and 100kg and I live thousands of miles from the good roads, so I need the comfort and mile munching that only this size of machine can give me.

    • @Traulus83
      @Traulus83 Год назад +1

      @@AndyManCam I was refering only to those. Those you took off but wont help you at anuthing. Cases, exhasut, battery, yes that's an improvement, but platsics and brackets.....wont help you much being taken off. Was a nice video to watch thou, never taught putting a super heavy bike in tough conditions just because of versatility

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  Год назад

      @Traulus83 I’m glad you found the video nice, but i don’t think you fully understand the concept of it. I think you’re being too black and white here. Any weight that is not adding to the function of the bike, that can be removed without performance cost, it’s helping in the right direction. The 5kg in the IKEA bag is ONLY small pieces of plastic and metal that are not needed, and they very quickly added up to a noticeable weight. With your attitude of ‚don’t worry about it, just improve your skills‘ you’ve very quickly got yourself a fully laden 275kg beast that you now need to haul up out of the dirt. Plus i think you’re missing the point somewhat. If my luggage weighs 5kg, but i can balance that weight out so that i can have the luggage and no extra weight on the bike, then that too is a glorious victory. Ultimately, every single little bit helps. And it doesn’t stop with the bolt ons. My panniers were half empty for my trip because anything that didn’t serve a purpose or wasn’t vital to the trip, i left behind. And i can tell you that after having picked up this bike before i did all of this work, and having picked it up (several times) after, Every single piece that i removed helped me a lot.

    As a very long term user of LiFePO4 batteries on Motos (over 8 years on my SkyRich Lithium battery) I can thoroughly recommend them. Lots of power. The only problem I've encountered is the cold. Once the temperature is below 3°C starting becomes problematic. The colder it gets, the more problematic it becomes. Minus 5°C and below is a real b#tch. The fix is to turn on the high beam headlight and let the Moto stand for about 2 - 5 minutes (it won't hurt the battery, honest), the colder it is the longer you leave it as the battery has to warm up. Then, try to start the bike (don't over crank it). It may take two or three goes to start. Mine lives in an unheated garage, so most of the time not problem but, parked up outside for the day in winter can be a problem.

    How to make GS owners look like tw*TS whilst maintaining decorum. Brilliant vid which points a subtle finger at society and it's ignorance generated by marketing.
    What's more ridiculous than massive 'adventure' bikes that never go off road?
    Electric SUVs.

      Not necessarily trying to make anybody look like a +w@+ but IMHO the last thing the BMW GS needs is more cc‘s and more power. Nobody needs more than 100bhp if they’re planning to take the bike off tarmac. It’s all about making people think they’re getting more so that they dig into their pockets and replace the already oversized, overspecced and overengineered bike with one that has even more bells and whistles (and useless, cross-platform pieces of plastic that ultimately could have kept the weight AND the cost of the bike down by just being left on the drawing room floor!) so they feel like they’re winning. Yamaha‘s T7 and Ducati‘s Desert X are the only two bikes recently that make me feel like they ‚get it‘.
      Now electric SUVs….

    The "floppy" thing at 09:10 is actually for the heat, not roasting your thighs.(not that it would actually help much...) The 1190 doesn't has that btw. 😁 The OEM handguards from KTM are quite sturdy btw...I've dropped my 990 ADV on the TET Poland and they just got a few scratches. Oh and don't forget to losen up the clamps of the brake and clutch lever, so they can rotate if you hit the ground and don't snap of the levers.

      I don’t really understand how it’s useless. Less weight on the bike is less weight to pick up. I can tell you for a fact that i noticed the missing 30kg when i had to pick the bike up. I also noticed the reduced top heaviness of the bike when things were slow and sketchy. As far as I’m concerned, any reduction in weight is good.

    I looked over a year now at your blue-yellow "I support Ukraine" Banner and asked myself repeatedly why do I have to endure that garbage when I just want to watch motorbike content. You dear Sir seem not to understand that shoving your politics in other people faces does not make you likable. Anyhow... your decision to push politics.... my decision to leave you after I was with your channel from nearly the beginning. You seem not to care, so I try that as well for a change... and feel better with it. Sad but reality

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  Год назад +21

      How many political opinions have i expressed within the content? How many times have i used motorcycle content to get my political views across? How many times have i promised motorcycle content and then surprised you with a political agenda? That would be zero on all counts. I’m not trying to be likable, I’m just being me. But if you feel the need to turn your back on me simply because I believe that invading your neighbors and killing their people is wrong, then I salute your departure. I do care, but apparently i just care in the opposite direction to that which you do. But you telling me that how i care is less valid than how you care is a level of intolerance that i want nothing to do with.
