  • Single Whip might be the most iconic, most recognizable movement in Tai Chi. And why is that? It might be because of how the right hand Palm's Yang Quality and the left hand hook's Yin Quality gives a powerful look of both dynamism and balance, in a way that is completely Tai Chi.
But what does this movement, so iconic and unique to Tai Chi, actually do? Most Tai Chi techniques have multiple options of usage. In this video we will explore a less commonly seen application, how to perform a head and neck control throw. Tai Chi as a martial art includes a sophisticated method of throwing that is difficult to resist and powerfully disorienting to the opponent. As you understand how Single Whip utilizes these qualities, what other understandings about Tai Chi movements, about grappling, and about applications will arise? Ready to find out? Let's begin.

I also like to practice cai in single whip like this. For me it was just from imagining different possibilities for single whip while practicing form, very cool to see someone with much more tai chi skill showing this!
There's also a nice Gu Lisheng style of application, where the hanging hand brings the attacker down as their thumb-up-left-hand grabs your right wrist. Externally it looks similar to other single whip styles but internally is a different kind of shape than, say, CMC style or what is being shown in the video here.
More excellent teaching here, thank you.

Thanks for sharing another application of Single Whip! That will certainly help to open people's minds even more to the possibilities within Tai Chi. It's always fascinating how different masters extract different wisdoms and usage out of these movements. Gu Lisheng is a completely remarkable master!

When he turns her the second time, he sinks to her skin and gets it tight and then floats her up in a circle. A circle always changes direction so it's very difficult to resist, you'd have to resist exactly in the right direction all the time to stop it, but it's too fast and before you know it your legs aren't under you anymore and you fall in some direction

You're very observant! Thank you for pointing out some details that may not be obvious for everyone at first. Circles are powerful in exactly that kind of capacity for change.
