Kamakura was the city where the Japanese samurai first established a full-fledged base of government, the shogunate.
At the top of the list was a samurai named Yoritomo Minamoto. He is called the Seii-Taishogun and is the prototype for SHOGUN, which is currently being shown on Netflix. Kamakura is home to many temples and shrines dedicated to the family, the samurai of the Hojo family who served the Minamoto family, and Masako Hojo, a female monk who became the leader of Kamakura. Many of the gourmet foods, works of art, and gardens strongly reflect the times.
