    03:07 the siren is so effective because the two defined pitches make it possible to know whether the police car (or any other emergency vehicle for that matter) is coming towards you or moves away from you… thanks to the Doppler effect.

    • @RustyDust101
      @RustyDust101 3 месяца назад +5

      Yepp, and it's not a continuous wave but a cut-off wave front from one octave to two octaves lower in one jump.
      This is in contrast to the US version which switches through a sine-wave pitch change. While the Doppler effect is measurable with the US version it requires instruments more precise than our brains to do so.

You learn it in drivers school and in the case of an accident or "normal" traffic jam, you behave like you have learnt it... AND you see all the other vehicles in front of you, doing it the right way - so simply copy that behavior (espesially when you are from a foreign country!)! That's the point that some are missing here like the trucks.

      @JanNyman. 3 месяца назад +2

      The problem with trucks is that they cant move to the side if the smaller cars have already stopped, they need a lot of space to move 18m. The biggest problem I see in this video is some of the cars don't seem to understand or not react fast enough to move aside or make space for other cars to be able to move. That said it works a hell a lot better than it does in Sweden so thumbs up!

      @@JanNyman. Trucks must keep a distance of at least 50 m to the vehicle in front of them while driving on the autobahn and due to their elevated cabin they can see traffic coming to a stop very early. That distance plus the early indication that traffic is coming to a stop gives them more than enough space to pull to the right side and make space.
      Once they've stopped almost in the trunk of the car in front of them, they obviously can't make space anymore. However that's NOT when you make space, you make space BEFORE coming to a stop. The emergency lane isn't created when an emergency vehicle announces its presence with its horn, it's created way before, when the traffic stops or becomes slow enough that it could stop at any moment. 9 out of 10 times the emergency lane is unnecessary, but that one time when it's needed, it's already there.

  • @Aotearas
    @Aotearas 3 месяца назад

    That policeman is getting professionally pissed at people not forming the rescue lane properly. You can tell that each time he stopped, it was because a car wasn't giving enough space in the middle for rescue vehicles to pass properly and he reminded them that they MUST drive on the left or right side respectively to make way in the middle.
    You could say he gave the drivers some pointers but that's underselling it a bit, what he's doing is basically the last chance reminder to GTFO of the way before the fines start rolling. Based on his leniency I would assume that whatever caused the traffic jam isn't an actual emergency like a crash or something serious like that, otherwise we'd see him passing a slip of paper for each of these drivers who failed to make way as required by law (!!!) rather than give them the "Are you a beginner driver? You know you have to create a rescue lane, right!?" talk.
    For context (as mentioned already) drivers are required by law to create a rescue lane if traffic is slowed to a crawl. Failure to do so is punished with 200€ (~218 USD), two points in the register and the driver's license suspended for one month at minimum. If there's actual emergencies where you inhibited emergency responders, the fine can go up to 320€ (~349 USD).

    Sorry, if anyone else already commented that, but in case not, the area in the middle of the light bar is called "Matrix" and it´s basically a red LED screen, that can be used to display messages, like for exsemple "please follow" or "do not pass" or if there is an accident and one lane is closed it´s often used to display arrows in the direction you are suppoed to go around the scene. Meanwhile toose messages are actually displayed alternating in german and english, in most cases.

    The problem is that none of the people he reprimanded got a ticket so they never learn. In Germany you should pull to the correct position in your lane to form the emergeny lane as soon as you notice that traffic is starting to go very slow. If you wait until you're fully stopped you it's already too late and there is basically no excuse for that and should be an automatic fine because you're potentially costing someone who's about to die vital time. People like the driver of the white car who pull off idiotic maneuvers should at least get like a 1 month suspension. The problem is just that the police is in such a rush that they don't have time to give everyone a ticket. They should probably have a system that allows to them to take a picture of the license plate and driver and process the tickets later.

  • @c2bRa

    The fine in germany is way too cheap, it's only 240€ (~260$) for not building the rescue lane, in austria you pay 2180€ (~2360$) when you disturb an emergency vehicle. Also the prosecution is way too rarely.

    Those vehicles are not actually reacting to the arrival of the police car.
    It's the law in Germany, that whenever the traffic jams on the Autobahn you have to pull over to the side and create an emergency lane.
    I think this cop is just checking the quality of the emergency lane, to make sure that it's ready when the actual rescue vehicles arrive. If he had really been in a hurry to get to the front of the jam, he wouldn't have made all those stops to talk to people.

    @darkknight8139 3 месяца назад +6

    The great thing here is that the police officer is very clear in his pointers to road users not keeping the Rettungsgasse (the emergency lane) alive, while staying extremely polite and calm. Because the car at 5:55 was in the way, he could have given the driver a fine of 280 euros, AND 2 points on the driving license AND a 1 month driving ban. Not keeping a Rettungsgasse is a serious offence in Germany with hefty punishment. If you cause an accident because you don't build an emergency lane, fines are much higher.
    Traffic jams in Germany tend to be horrible. The distance between exits can be many kilometers, so if there is a car crash for example, the jam can easily build up for miles. That is why it is so important to build the emergency lane.

    They are parting the way not because they hear the siren but because there is a traffic jam. Whenever you notice traffic slowing down people make way for potential police or ambulance. The 3 basic rules for this kind of emergencylane goes like that:
    1. the most left lane pulls to the left as far as possible
    2. ALL other lanes pull to the right as far as possible
    3. even in this process the hard shoulder lane on the far right can not be entered by any vehicles

      Rule 3 is commonly ignored. To be fair, driving partially on the right shoulder is the only way trucks can make enough space for a fire truck to pass through the emergency lane. Otherwise there is no way to fit a regular car, a fire truck and a regular truck side by side on a two lane autobahn.

    The part in the middle is a read dot matrix LED panel. This bar is special, because as you can see on the top, it can extend a second LED Matrix that is bit bigger and brighter, that would mirror the lower one. Usually used to secure accidents or other dangers.
    Since newer light bars tend to be very low profile, the LED matrices often are placed in the front and rear window. Also especially for the Autobahn, there are special variants, with huge LED matrices on top of the roof, that can be extended and give additional information, like how the lane situation might change, so when to merge and so on.

      I saw one of those lately - police passed, went to the right and stopped at a crash (I believe just a collision with a construction marker). Some hundred metres in front was a sign alerting to a road split with two 2.10m lanes going left, while the other stayed right.
      Police car displayed arrows left.
      Semi in front and we (with trailers) joined the middle lane only to find out that it continued straight and had only one lane splitting. (Also, while it did get narrower, it was definitely wider than 2.10m). The right lane just kind of ended without warning.
      Basically, we were very likely to make the same mistake as the other car, all due to bad signage.

    As traffic slows down on the autobahn, people are required to give way for approaching emergency vehicles (by law). However, traffic slowing down often is caused by construction sites and not by accidents, so some people get used to it and tend to not take it too seriously. Also if you aren't driving on the autobahn regulary, you easily get overwhelmed in this situation and don't remember what direction to go. So that's why in the beginning he is explaining:"Everyone should go right, except for the very left lane. they should go left to create space in between. Did they do it? Well, we're gonna find out soon" (sarcastic)
    First car: "You have to drive to the left, if you just take a look backwards..."
    2nd Car: "Over there (points left). Yeah (nodding), that's where you belong... "
    3rd Car: You are impeding emergency vehicles, if you don't give way. It's not funny. You have do drive LEFT, NOT ON THE TRACK"
    4th Car: "Good day, are you a beginner in driving? - No. - Well, then one should know to stay on the right and not here... somewhere in the middle where I can't get through. That doesn't make sense" - "Well, I was just giving way" - "No, you are not allowed to cross lanes, you have to stay on the right.
