from what i gather its actually not insured if the key is in the ignition and vehicle is unattended ,its in the small print of an insurance policy , but in this case the taxpayer pays for the codology and here now two people were killed as a result of keys left in the ignition how sad for the familys of the three unfortunate people in the pick up truck ,, may they rest in peace

One of the most overlooked way to prevent car theft is to just turn the engine off and remove the key.

The families of the victims want to file charges for wrongful death. How about going after the judge(s) who has been releasing her instead of keeping this criminal in prison? Police departments are struggling to get and keep officers. The overtime and all the tech they need is busting their budgets constantly. Not all departments can afford to do upgrade everything. Besides, the thief is the problem here, the attitude of most of the commenters on this story sounds like most are members of the Chip on the Shoulder Club.
There is not a lack of funds for law enforcement.
They get large amounts of kickbacks from their arrests and false imprisonment of citizens from the private prisons in which they moonlight.
Many precincts siphon funds from drug busts, are involved with in-house human trafficking, etc.

How many Police cars does that make that people have stolen a Sheriffs Deputy would be the first to tell anybody not to leave their keys in their car but it doesn't look like they practice what they preach !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is a simple fix for this kind of thing, and most new vehicles already have it in them. The software can be set in the vehicle's computer that when a key FOB is no longer inside the vehicle and as soon as you step on the brake to put into gear, the vehicle shuts off immediately.
My R/T Charger had a similar function. If the key fob left the car it couldn't be put into gear, and would shut off in 5 mins.
rent-a- cop probably left the key fob in the vehicle. in that case, no way to stop it, if it's stolen.
All new vehicles have this fix, you can’t be driving around in a vehicle without the key FOB next to it. It’s obvious the incompetent deputy left it in there for convenience.
The Ford Interceptor Utility uses a regular key. Ours (a city in VA) have a shift lock that requires 2 hands and a foot to move from park. We get days off without pay for turning it off.
An even simpler fix is to use the "turn off the engine and take the key with you" system, which often comes with the "and lock the car doors" package.
So fracking sad.

The criminal is to blame for the theft, the cop is to blame for not taking the proper preventative measures. The cop did not do his part.

In my city police will ticket you if you leave your keys in your car and it running. Yet they do it all the time, in fact the exact same thing happened here 3-4 years ago. Some cop left his car running, some nut got in it and took off and ran over two little girls, killing them.

"anti-theft measures" Ford used the 1284X key for all their fleet cars including every police car, something u can get for $5, no transponder on the key. There are not anti-theft measures on patrol cars.

@@TOBYH All the reports I've read say she was well known by law enforcement, even at the presser the Sheriff used her own rap sheet in an attempt to show how bad she was and to try to take the heat off of himself and the deputy. Fact is imo his use of her rap sheet and acknowledgement that he and his department had multiple run ins with her makes this even worse and more senseless as it further proves the deputy knew what type of individual he was interacting with and he failed to take necessary precautions ultimately leading to the death of innocent people. If these were my loved ones I'd be looking for some justice.

I'll never understand why cops go on these high speed chases. They often end just like this. Many years ago in the city I lived in, back when you could often pump your gas before paying, a person did a "pump and run". Cops chased them, it ended up in a horrible wreck killing several people. A teenager with no record was chased over $20 worth of gas. At some point common sense has to come into play.
Imagine someone without immunity left a vehicle running, and a person stole it and killed people with it. Jail and massive lawsuits.

Except, emergency vehicles while they are in the performance of official duties if, they are equipped with an activated anti-theft device, delivery vehicles while making deliveries or waste management vehicles while collecting such items. If the cop would have took his keys with him instead of leaving them where she could get them those people would still be alive. They need to ask why he didn't have the keys.

Edit: I blame her for stealing the car and crashing it and killing 2 innocent people but it’s the officers fault for making the car accessible to her.

I've been stuck in this wheelchair nowadays! since september 2021. I had A lung embolie and was reanimated after ten minutes dead. I'm 66. on the 31st of january (day before yesterday) my partner (Lady 65) had a cAR CRASH AND SHE DIED! There is no god ANYWHERE! He has done enough trash on me by now! I have done NOTHING wrong in my Life! seven years in the Army during peacetime. NEVER Hurt anybody! I can't stop crying. I miss her so dam much
I am so sorry to hear of your loss and your ongoing difficulties. I would suggest that God gave you a little more time when many don't get to wake up and we all will eventually die. I cannot change the way you feel, and I appreciate your service. I'm 62 and on blood thinners because of the same medical issues. My loss wasn't as recent but I have felt the hurt just the same. You are not alone and I'm convinced that our loved ones await us on the other side as long as we desire it. My loss may have been the preparation for me to "feel" what you typed. You are being prepared for something else. Bless you and stay strong.

They are not liable for the actions of that woman - SHE is! She could have stolen your car while you were opening your garage door or checking your mail - would you expect to be held liable?

The problem is that the news report does not tell you the Who, What Where, When and Why. They focus on the destruction of the vehicle and the impression it leaves with you. You will notice they asked no questions of the eye-witness. This report gets a D-.
The judge who released her should be jailed. 2 innocent people died because of him/her.

She was not even under arrest, she was just nearby. The deputy stopped to enter a store but left his cruiser running with the key in it, then the local meth-head saw it and took it for a joyride and wiped out four people including herself (it was initially two victims dead but the third victim passed away two days later).
