    *** UpDate*** 8th August 2021 - Hey everybody, I’m so glad this video has been so well received and I’m so happy to have helped hundreds of Saab owners and that people have taken the time to watch it and pay very close attention to the results of this ECU modification for its longevity and for temperature and damper protection of your ECU… which are now no longer available and completely obsolete. My installed as seen in this video ECU Protection Kit is now over nearly 2 years old hasn’t had any issues …looks like new …. my ECU unit temperature now stays at 61°c max … on the 43°c hottest of Australian summer days … and down to 47°c on mild sumner days … it used to be 91°c all the time ….even in winter here m. Works like a dream….. As of today Steve is still making these ECU kits and they are still available on his website which is:
    www.saabautomobile.com.au/
    and his email …
    The price is ridiculously cheap at $120AUS which includes “Worldwide Shipping” all around the world. However, beware there are copies out there from Taiwan and China they are absolutely substandard and non bakelite they simply don’t work we’ve tried one and ordered it… and the good news !!! Steve’s kits are now available for the Saab V6 model engines and that’s available on Steve’s website as well, check also the Description Field of this video …which will be coming up with all the details of the new Saab V6 ECU kits, Keep cruising ….continue Saabing and we’ll see you in the next video, cheers Andrew Pennan⚔️ proud owner of a Saab 93 Aero Convertible

    When I had to replace my ECU, I had the same thought about why the heck is the ECU right there lol. Was thinking about protecting my replacement ECU with some reflective foil, but this looks way better solution. I also like the tip about opening up the engine cover vents

      Hey Leonard ;) absolutely, nice to meet you. Yes what a stupid place to put an ECU on one of the hottest parts of the manifold intake. I actually can pretty much be assured to blame GM Holden lol ... and I don’t think SAAB would ever of done that. Thank you ;) now if they fail after about 10 years (normal
      Lifespan) then people are trouble as at the moment Lenard there are none available anywhere in the world period ....so if you have a 93 thus kit is a must....so if anyone’s goes now ... they’re pretty much gone. So lucky you got a new one in there. I would honestly protected it by ordering a kit from from Steve it’s easy to put on and this will ensure that the metal fatigue and possible vibrations are limited down to the very minimal and will insure this ECU will you last at least 15 years., Really nice to meet you another Saab enthusiast ;) by the way Steve Emanuel is a freaking genius is one of the best saab technicians worldwide. Very lucky to have him do this modification for us. Let me know how you go cheers Andrew⚔️

      Hey T flowers, so sorry for late response I thought I’d check this video but obviously I’ve got some comments hidden below well I hope you pick one up Steve is very efficient this is high quality Bakelite high quality rubber screw set up it will certainly do its job my ECU has been well protected under 47°C in our 40°c summer temperature here in Sydney Australia, let me know how you went and I hope it made a big difference like it did to me ..but I’m sure it did …. And all the test works like a dream 👍 . There are some Chinese and Korean guys making cheaper copies but not using Bakelite terrible examples of a rip off cheaper not working version. Have an awesome day cheers Andrew ⚔️

      Hey Gabrielle, Great to hear from you and obviously you’re a very happy saab driver. Definitely get one of these they’re easy to put on the full demo installation instructions are on the video Steve Emmanuel who owns Saab Salvage and Sydney was one the top saab technicians they flew him to Sweden he was head here in Australia he knows his stuff backwards his invention product works I have no affiliation nothing to do with his business I just reviewed it and got a free one but my god what a difference it made. I’d also recommending using a Dremel tool to grind out your three slots in the front of your plastic which is actually Bakelite engine cover that will help get the cooling through there as well make it even cooler as I said to Mr Flowers mine hasn’t gone over 46°C, before it was up around 90°C this is definitely a major contributor to the failing ESC’s just email him in care of my information in the description field of my video, let me know how you go have a great day cheers Andrew⚔️

I’m about to release a video next week which is the new one the 95 kit for the V6 and that’s going to be epic with another big interview with Steve Emanuel who is Mr saab Australia and showing off his Saab 900 S sports turbo and this will be a great in its self as well get yourself one don’t rely on the silly aftermarket copies from Taiwan their rubbish get the real Bakelite real deal from Steve it’s absolutely unbelievable, it dropped my temperature down 28 to 35 °c … makes such a difference ; ) awesome cheers Andrew⚔️

    Seems fairly simple to make one! I have just replaced the ECU in a 2008 9-3 2.0 BP, failed last summer on a 30 C hot day here (which seldom happens in Norway), but since I have had to reset the "P0601" error code 3 times. This engine is in several other GM cars, and probably the ECU is in those as well

    Did this mod last year, wrapped my spacer plate in foil, and I left off the plastic saab cover as it's a heat trap.
    I will be fitting some plastic ducting
    From front , with an air of 12v 100mm computer can to sit above the ecu.
    The air will be forced in through the front, and lifted off the ecu by the fan.
    Barring that it's an extension harness, which is no problem as I work in a breakers and always have access to saab.
    Nice video 👍

      Yes I did..... but,
      Since then I have watched a RUclips vid
      From saab Taiwan.
      They very cleverly show you step by step how to resite the ecu, by splicing the wiring loom, and locating the ecu away from the engine.
      I will be doing this shortly, I see it as a better option.

    Very informative video! Once your car starts showing classic ECU problems, but car still drives around and symptoms are only intermittent and recent... might the ECU still be salvageable with a heat shield? OR... is the ECU a delicate thing where once issues start, it's already too late (as in, time to replace it with heat shield and re-program to car)?

    I have a 2006 93 2.8L with some ECU issues not making the ignition coils work properly. I changed it and had my local Saab shop reprogramed it. Worked fine but now I'm having other issues like the AC compressor staying on, radiator fan stays on also, need to turn key on and off to reset it. But now AC compressor won't work. Can this work on my car?

  • @doug900S

    The way I see it, the intake manafold gets very hot, and the ECU, mounted directly without standoffs, act like a giant heatsink. isolating it with this kit, has to help. I installed one on my 2007 9-3, and have one to install on my 2010 9-3 XWD. I've been procastinating, but I think I will install it today 8/2022. Also, it would be nice to install some kind of duct routed to the front of the car to create air flow over the ECU to help keep it cool, in addition to the stand-off kit. what is your view on this? Also, something tells me that there is probably a solder joint lifting off the circuit board over time from the heat generated, cousing failure. I still have my failed ECU, and I may pull it apart to take a look. I have been doing electronic repairs for years, so it is nothing new to me. Boy, that's a clean engine you have there!

    There are some people that I've seen or read about doing actual electrical repairs and reviving them. I'm a little annoyed that I didn't grab one of them off of junker at my local junkyard even though it was for sedan and I have a convertible I should have just grabbed it anyway because I doubt anybody else grabbed it in my area and it probably just got crushed. I have alerts now for all the junk yards near me and a 40-mi radius and I am going to be grabbing all the ECUs that I can as they come up

    Fantastic vid, very well produced and instructional.
    Short term wouldn't simply just removing the plastic shrouding above the engine re 'heat soak' (so common on modern engines for so called stylistic purposes, not to mention countries with heat issues like Australia and elsewhere!) assist in cooling at the very least prior to a failure...!? I bet one of these engines without the plastic shrouding (aside from the poor siting of the ECU) would run a lot better?

    • @zulupenman
      @zulupenman  9 месяцев назад +1

      Hey Mark great comment thank you so much for popping in and sorry for the late reply I’ve been overseas. Yes totally agree the plastic covers not needed most saab owners remove them completely adds a lot more airflow, I personally left I left mine for Aesthetic’s and then use the Dremel tool and drilled and slotted out put little nice slots in to get a nice airflow directing straight over of the ECU, however, it didn’t make a lot of difference to temperature the heat coming from the manifold intake still transferred through to the ECU… is so hot it is like 91°C and even the cooling of that wind flow doesn’t do a lot maybe only 3° lower… . This little heat diffuser insulation mechanism and this kit that Steve invented is friggin incredible as you saw brought it down from 91°c to 43°C and just works like a dream, 91° c was crazy hot .. but look out for a Taiwan company did try to copy it with cheap parts not using Bakelite so I don’t recommend getting those … get in touch with Steve I think he still does it on the side he’s now closedown and sold his Saab Salvage business but he still makes these kits I only like $100 Australian … and they still sell like crazy.. because they’re so incredibly well designed. Have an awesome day thanks for the fantastic feedback on the video greatly appreciated, have a great day cheers Andrew ;)

Diesel engines I think have the ECU positioned in the same place on the manifold intake (thank you GM for this ridiculous place to put it) so just double check that if that’s the case just installation damper kit will work perfectly for you. • @zulupenman
      @zulupenman  3 года назад +1

      Hey Doug nice to meet you, when I met not available any more you can’t buy brand-new ones anymore. The problem is metal fatigue and just wear and tear and the poor design of this stupid ECU on a tiny miniature curved circuit board means a brand new one only has a life of 10 years, so buying a secondhand one at that price is a risk as you will get very limited life out of it but fingers crossed for you. All the information on how to purchase the kit is available in the “Description field” of the video click the arrow down button under the video and you’ll enlarge and see description field and Steve’s details are all there had a purchase and worldwide shipping ;) it’s definitely worth it 👍 the price of the components / parts alone are worth about AU$85. This would definitely protect and give you the full service life of the ECU for years as heat seems to be the major culprit. Awesome cheers thank you Andrew⚔️

    • @zulupenman
      @zulupenman  Год назад

      Hey thank you so much for your question Olga, look it’s interesting once the ECU starts to fail or play up ..it’s because by heat on the ECU which slowly dries the circuit boards( which starts to crack circuit boards which essentially wraparound inside the ECU casing like a Letter C) which start to fail the circuits and also have metal fatigue, certainly this would definitely help any forward movement of that deteriorating process of damage. So yes essentially it will protect it as of today and maybe not get any worse. However it’s a great kit to have for a new ECU if you can get one and that will then put that in a perfect position brand-new when you install it if you need to, Hope that helps, but check with Steven Emmanual at Saab Salvage in Sydney he’ll confirm that but I’ve said is possibly the outcome. Hope that helps thank you so much cheers Andrew⚔️

      No worries Olga , I own a saab 2004 aero convertible and I love it to death but my ECU died when the local NRMA tried to jump start it and fried the ECU … that was about three years ago I was able to obtain a new one from Saab AB international in Sweden a brand-new fully programmed ECU which I got installed by my local saab repairer. When I came across Steve’s invention I was blown away and thought this is exactly what I need he was a very high up Technician in saab Australia and was flying around the country to repair and fix saab‘s. He designed this himself which reduces the temperature on the ECU by as you saw in the video 70° down to 38°c it really works fantastic it also stops the vibrating and damp affect on the whole ECU unit so clever brilliant design he owns six subs and is absolutely an expert on saab engines motors and designing aftermarket modifications.…. Olga I can highly recommend it. Typical a Taiwanese guy tried to copy of that whole design with the cheaper inferior parts and charging nearly the same price as Steve. But my advice for don’t even look anywhere else just buy it from Steve he has the most incredible Bakelite high tensile bolts with rubberised and damper internals .. it is really a very professional kit and the price is incredible for what you’re getting… I have no affiliation involvement with it I just reviewed it for Steve and I can highly recommend it. Easy to install as you saw in the video but I recommend maybe a mechanic do it if you’re not fully confident. Hope that helps definitely get one it will help your ECU for now for sure and maybe give it another eight years of life ;) have a great day thanks for watching video cheers Andrew

    I've made similar thing but didn't use rubber mountings and instead of bakelite I've used textolite. After short ride it was okay, just warm. Today though, after longer ride ECU is so hot that I can't touch it (even after 1 hour). You might want to investigate it once again - if it actually works. Disappointed. :/ Seems like extending the cables and moving ECU far away is the only real solution.

    • @zulupenman
      @zulupenman  2 года назад

      Hey Mr galaxy thank you so much for your feedback and brilliant idea giving it a try with your own DIY, well this is interesting I will live in Australia we get to 42° to 44°C in summer and while I went out last summer and my manifold intake was 91° c while the actual ECU itself with measured laser temperature was 57°C so it definitely works the Bakelite is probably the key ingredient and also the rubber mounts they are totally half inch rubber through the centre, but obviously yes agreed moving it way out of the engine bay would be the go, but this certainly works Steve still selling them and he’s now had over 3000 orders and it’s only $120 each Australian $$ including shipped anywhere in the world you can’t even buy the ingredients for that …. 👍 give this one a go see if it works any better I think you’ll be surprised, awesome cheers Andrew⚔️

      Hey Joeybabbs ;) Nice to meet you and thanks for your feedback that’s quite encouraging. Look it’s not just that heat it’s also the vibration and the constant movement of the stupid position GM have decided to put the ECU in ... it should’ve been under the dash hidden away Zzz but it’s right on the frying pan.. lol .. this certainly stops with the dampering with this kits rubberised bolt system ... but seriously once the things fail and usually you get about 10 years out of them there’s none available anywhere zero ziltch zippo ... with no secondhand ones and they can’t be mapped or made none left the world they gone finished.. I got the last one in Sweden it cost me AU$1400 that was 12 months ago. That’s not a bad investment for about AU$100 and simple to put on 👌 anyway each to their own but I can thoroughly recommend it, especially with the amount of k’s you’ve got on yours now ...check it oout Steve will help you any issues shipping etc cheers man awesome feedback thank you cheers Andrew ⚔️

Look at the main reason is the heating at that engine location regardless of the heat shield will still generate 60 to 70°c heat so it’s like being in a sauna you’re not going to escape it it’s just moving around that whole area, so the Bakelite not only doesn’t get hot but the springs in the screws system Steve uses have a rubber Gromit so the actual steel doesn’t go the whole way through so that’s where the heat normally transfers through to the ECU via those Screws/ Bolts, this is an absolute brilliant device the Taiwanese guys try to copy it with cheaper rudimentary cheap materials didn’t work at all … you could see the temperature in this setup went from 92°C to 48°c that was a remarkable drop Steve was a Technician who saab AUSTRALIA employed to work for Australia wide he’s got over 30 years experience in saab‘s and he knows them backwards this is a pretty clever device works like a dream, we also added benefit is it damper protection so the rubber screw grommets also vibrate and take away the direct vibrations… for $100 including shipping Australian that is incredible value bang for buck you can’t make it for much less than that with the materials ;) hope that helps have an awesome day cheers Andrew ⚔️

      My 2010 SAAB 93SC VECTOR ECU just failure recently....
      I replaced a used T8 ECU & re-programmed it by TECH2 to match my car
      Because of the T8 ECU position , just on the top of the engine (Heat / vibration ..,etc)
      I think it will failure again when time go through.....
      Hope the Heat insulator kit can help to improve the T8 ECO lifetime~

      Hey Shawn L, Nice to hear from you thank you so much for popping in and giving your feedback on the price. Look I’m not involved with it I just review the product but I know that those individual rubberised bolts .. that don’t have the steel go the whole way through they’re independently rubberise centres with those you get dampening and extra heat protection ... those little suckers aren’t cheap there about $12 each alone ... I can only get them from advanced engineering shops ... have the independent rubbish inside ... The main Base plate is a ultra high quality Bakelite material again not cheap to buy one sheets about $200 and you have to only get maybe 5 to 8 out of them... driving my car here in Australia it’s 47°C last week and I have a big sigh of relief when I hop in my Saab I know that im getting really tough protection the heat and vibrations of that brand-new ECU I purchased for about AU$1500 ...yikes ... like I said to many people you just can’t get any ECU’s use any more they gone ....so when yours fails the car pretty much become scrap ... crazy hey ... bloody GM Holden positioning that bastard there lol ... cheers Andrew⚔️

    • @shawnl7966

      Thanks for the reply. Now that I think of it this may be due to prices in Australia being higher. I've used those rubberized isolation bolts in various projects, and here they are a buck or two each from places like McMaster Carr. I do understand that Bakelite can be expensive. I'm likely going to make one of these for my car and if I use Bakelite I think I will take my chances and order some from Ali Express, they have it for cheap.
      No less though the product is a great idea and much needed for these 9-3's. Thanks for reviewing it.
      Cheers from Canada

      Hey Shawn L ... no worries at all you sound like a guy pretty switched on, Yes build one of these little kits absolutely do it Shawn my temperatures been lowered by 15 to 19° cooler and I’ve actually cut slots in the manifold cover plastic part which lets more airflow ... i’m so scared now for other people haven’t got something in place it certainly reduces the heat but more importantly it also adds a damper affect for the ongoing metal fatigue that these things get over time ..in that stupid position GM obviously had their hands all over it ... in positioning it there ... lol as I know at this time Jan 2020 they’re just impossible to get ... you can’t get any new ECU’s anywhere in the world... very sad ... Great to chat Shawn let me know how you went ;? Cheers Andrew ⚔️

      @@zulupenman It's really not that expensive to make ... I don't know where you looked at the prices, but everything can be bought on aliexpress or at local tool shops .. Rubber damping bolts ~ 4-5$ ... I bought 5mm bakelite plate in the desired dimension for about 2$ (resistant to 130 degrees) ... Along with everything else it costs less than $ 10 ... Of course, great respect for this invention ! Because you have presented it in detail and someone who really wants it with very little effort can make it themselves...

      Just bought a 200mmx200mmx10mm sheet of Bakelite for $16USD on amazon. That'll be too big and I'll have to cut with a saw, but it really does not need to be pretty.
      Ill be going to Ace Hardware to pick up the needed bolts, I expect that will cost in the ball park of $5USD. I'll get back to you about sizing.

  • @AlexSakellaris
    @AlexSakellaris 3 года назад +3

    What proof do you have ECUs fail due to heat? the ECU is built with military grade electronics, heat doesn't cause damage to circuitry. An overheating CPU will just crash and when it cools off it will gracefuly resume operation as normal. There are other factors that affect ECU's, mostly humidity. Where this ECU is placed is ideal to counter moisture. Vibration is a far more probable cause for ECU failure than heat. The rubber mounts have no effect since you use metal studs to screw the ECU onto the intake manifold. So vibrations will still propagate from one metal to another metal component. Good try anyway, but I'm not buying into this. Hard to imagine the engineers at SAAB didn't know better...
