"My followers?" ... "Your *victims*!" That exchange gives me chills every time, seeing what Londo is involved in. Oh, Londo ..... There is a book trilogy concerning the Technomages, I recommend it if you can find it, but do not read this trilogy before finishing the series proper. Vir is growing. BTE look at Vir's face when Londo and Refa discuss the emperor. Excellent facial acting by Stephen Furst. BTW: Purple!
The Technomages are leaving the galaxy just like the Elves did in The Lord of the Rings. It is no coincidence that Elric uses the same words as Gildor when he meets Frodo and talks about wizards.
Tolkien's Elves did not leave the galaxy. Valinor was part of Arda until the 3rd Age. Then Valinor was cut off from the physical world of Arda, but that does not mean it left the galaxy. There is no concept of "galaxy" in Tolkien's stories. Instead Tolkien embeds the ancient cosmology of his faith: a flat Earth with a dome of Heaven above, said dome having different levels. Valinor now exists in a lower Heaven, not the highest heaven of Eru (aka "El" in the Bible) nor on the physical (now spherical) Arda (aka Earth.)
The metaphor to real world flags and nations is strong with the sashes. It is arbitrary whether you have one or another. The leadership is often not chosen based on ability, but other arbitrary factors (Usually wealth and connections in the real world). Hating the other side purely for being the other side and escalating aggression against the 'other' leading to totally unnecessary deaths is all too common in the real world. Fights are often between people who are culturally nearly indistinguishable but live on opposite sides of an invisible boundary and therefore see each other as 'different'. It is also 'silly' in reality, but mostly it's sad.

Oh if you can get your hands on the DVD you have to watch it with the commentary on it is hilarious. The commentary has the actors that play Sheridan, Garibaldi, Ivanova. Cool factoid Claudia actually while chasing a butterfly in her backyard, then re-broke it during the fight scene in the conference room with the Drazi when she fell on the floor. There is a series of books that deal with the Technomages and how they were created.
I love how they make a bow all around the episode to get to one point. Londo wanting the techno mage's audience for endorsement. Him denying Londo back and forth like a cat and mouse game only to give him an advidce for free in the end. You want my impression of you? You f#*ed up that's my impression. This one's for free. Love how they do that in a lot of episodes. The end revealing the purpose or a deeper meaning of something seemingly pointless or unimportant that's been going on the whole episode. Love the writing of this show.
Wow girl, there's no way I could pull off that lipstick colour but you rock it :) Fun fact #1: The technomage Elric is played by Michael Ansara. He also played the Klingon captain Kang in the Star Trek episode "Day Of The Dove" (and reprised that role later in a Deep Space Nine episode) Fun fact #2: Claudia Christian, the actress playing Ivanova, had actually broken her foot in an off-set accident prior to shooting this episode. So they wrote around it: that's why you don't see her WALKING anywhere in the first half of the episode, and why they wrote in her broken-foot-injury into the story. Fun fact #3: On most Babylon 5 groups, you'll find people constantly posting "Green! Purple!" memes. One group I know has even banned them because they were flooding the group. (Don't join these groups, because holy spoilers Batman!) No spoilers, but.... I do hope that you eventually review the Babylon 5 spinoff series "Crusade". :)
Michael Ansara was married to Barbara Eden, from I dream of Jeannie, which Ansara was also in, where he played the Djinn. They had a son, who around 2000 or so (I think) died from overdose, he was 35.

There is a reason why the technomages sticking around for the ****** *** would be a VERY bad idea. It's explained in the technomage book trilogy. I wholeheartedly recommend reading it. It's excellent.
Yes, Londo is still feeling he has everything under control, and is just now thinking of his own advancement. He hasn't suffered yet- he will have to before realizing how much it cost him You should notice Vir- he is slowly becoming more assertive It's not directly stated- but when Sheridan visits Garibaldi in his quarters, it is inferred that he was contemplating suicide- which Sheridan didn't address directly- just makes the point by holstering the PPG while talking about the universe and easy choices Still get a chill by "Your Victims"
I am amused by the number of people who miss the signs of Garibaldi contemplating suicide. I picked it up right off, but when discussing the scene with others, they did not recognize what was going on.
Unfortunately, we'll never see techno-mages after that in the main series. However, there is a book trilogy, "The Passing of the Techno-Mages", written by Jeanne Cavelos and considered canon by J. Michael Straczynski, creator of Babylon 5. The second book, "Summoning Light", depicts (among other things) the events of this episode from the techno-mage's point of view. It's not recommended to read these books before finishing season 3, since they contain some major spoilers for the series.
You are just a few episodes away from The Coming of Shadows, which will [spoilers, spoilers, spoilers]. Also, winner of the 1996 Hugo award. And the title of the whole season.
The techno-mages are acting like cowards. They are leaving just when they are needed most, hoping that people with less power and knowledge can defeat the coming Darkness. If they Darkness is defeated, then the techno-mages can reap the rewards without contributing to the struggle. If the Darkness wins, they can stay in hiding where all their power and knowledge benefits no one. They risk nothing, sacrifice nothing, yet they cloak their actions in an attempt at noble respect from those they are abandoning.

If there is a real-world analogue to Green and Purple, it's not political parties. People generally choose to support those because they agree with their policies, or at least disagree with their policies less than the alternatives - there's actual meaning there. I think the closest thing to a real world analogue is probably sports team rivalries, but even those often have political underpinnings.
As I understand it there was a war on the drazi homeworld between two continents, one was more tropical and therefore got more sun, causing the people to be tanned (purple), this contest commemorates that war
@@Talisguy Probably more nationality and race than sports teams. People, sort of, choose their teams, but where you are born and what skin colour you have is not under your own control at all. Where a person is born has a lot of influence in their political affiliations, and humans tend to have strong support for (or opposition to) those politics. The biggest problem is that people who are mindlessly loyal to their political views, without even considering the other points of view, tend to be a problem. That is how I feel about people who literally believe that former president Donald Trump won the election and think it was stolen from him. They are fanatically loyal to him, and to a somewhat lesser extent fanatically loyal to the republican party. Though to be fair, there are democrats who are also fanatically loyal to their party and will not even consider what a republican thinks or wants. The major divide between the parties, the fanatical loyalty, and the hatred for the opposing party is a massive problem. They are all United States citizens and generally believe in the United States constitution. At the very least, they should be able to come together for those reasons. Unfortunately, Russia has been doing their best to divide U.S. citizens even more and they have been quite successful at that by using trolling tactics to increase distrust between democrats and republicans.
