So many people say to stay for the kids, but as someone who's parents "stayed for the kids" I can say it's a terrible idea. Kids learn from their parents and their parents' relationships. Even if no one tells the kid he cheated, they'll usually find out eventually. Even if they don't, the dysfunction can build up and kids will think that's normal and acceptable.
This was my life honestly. My dad had a whole girlfriend when I was 8. No one told me and I found out when I was 22. Love my dad but he caused a lot of trauma.

Yes. I was 5 when it came to light my dad cheated (emotional and physical affair) on my mom. My youngest brother was just born, and my sister (3) didn’t understand what was going on. My mom stayed and the cheating never stopped; it’s been almost 20 years. My relationship to my father is tumultuous and I have no respect for him (and my mom for a long time too for not leaving him). As the oldest, my mom would tell me all about their struggling relationship and when I asked her why she didn’t leave, she’d always say it’s because of us. We kids grew up feeling like a burden to her. If the parents relationship isn’t healthy, don’t stay. It fucks up your kids worse than getting a divorce.
This is so true. My parents divorce when I was 13 didn’t really bother me at all - I knew they were unhappy and it was for the better. I now have decent relationships with them as individuals

This comment gets to me in the core because my ex wanted to bring a girl for a whole week to stay at our apt while I was away at my parents house with our toddler and me being 9 mo pregnant at the time. finding out my dad cheated on my mom absolutely destroyed my mental health, more than it already was. she didn't leave him until two years later, but by then i already moved across the country to get away from the abuse, neglect, & lies. i promise you, your kids will most likely thank you in the end. set the example & show your kids you refuse to tolerate being treated less than you deserve.

Here's an ugly truth. Most people don't stay for the kids, they just tell themselves that to feel better. People stay out of fear of losing money, social circles, a support system. Saying you're "staying for the kids" is just selfish cognitive dissonance because youre putting yourself before your kids.
A key detail that I wish they focused on was that she said she started sleeping with people outside the marriage after her husband cheated. As soon as she said that I made up my mind! Because regardless of whether he knows or not, that decision isn't coming from a mutual desire to have a relationship. It sounds like "Well you cheated, so you can't be mad if I slept with someone else." And that's an unhealthy position to put herself in. It sounds like they're out of it and are fighting for the marriage because of principle.
Only comment that stated that and it's absolutely true. She cheated also and I think the only reason she came on the show was for sympathy and acceptance. Of course most people would advise someone to divorce, so she looked for that step to use it in her favor. It's quite obvious that she had no feelings for him as well and that relationship was long done. At least the kids won't have to face the hypocrisy of two people.
It angers me how many of our parents are only together because of us! No love, no soul, no boundaries, just because we're their children but it can also teach us the wrong kind of "love". You parents are supposed to show you how you're supposed to interact with other people. If they are happily married in a monogamous relationship, great. If they are happy in some kind of polyamorous relationship, also great. As long as you are in a healthy relationship, your child will learn how to communicate, how to trust, etc. Cheating is breaking the trust of your partner(s). For some, a kiss can be cheating. For others, sex might not be cheating, but having an emotional connection with someone else is. Cheating, in whatever form, has no place in a loving relationship. If you hurt your partner by doing something they explicitly told you would hurt them, then you're a bad partner, and will possibly teach your child how to be a bad partner.

Cheating can happen for a million different reasons, and usually indicates a serious issue in the relationship. I am not in any way making an excuse for cheating, but its alot more complicated than "he cheated, hes evil".

Leave them. The kid seeing this would potentially lead them to the view of settling for less than you deserve is okay. You get what you allow and most times.. if someone cheats once, they'll cheat again from my experience.

I hate when people bring up “staying for the kids” like absolutely not. Yes how they’re impacted is greatly important but not a reason to stay. I want to teach my kids that yes people can make mistakes but some mistakes are unforgivable. I want them to know that choosing yourself and your happiness is important as well. I want them to know that you shouldn’t be with someone who doesn’t put you first and doesn’t show you the respect and love you deserve.
She sounds so much happier after leaving. I believe broken pieces can stick back together stronger, but definitely not in this case. When trust is broken, it's broken. For me, cheating is unforgiveable and does irrevocable damages to a relationship. It will make your partner lose trust in you, become paranoid on whether or not you will cheat again and affect their self esteem. Who does that to someone they love? Cheating only occurs when that person does not love the other person enough.

As a student who will eventually be a marriage and family therapist, I would suggest couples therapy because it is not just for couples who stay together. It is also for couples who wish to separate or divorce amicably and learn to peacefully coparent. It can also help people who are still deciding if they want to stay together or separate. Very helpful for her at any stage.

my friends fiancé cheated on her, she was pregnant with his kid while he was hoeing around but she stayed because of the baby. My parents fought a-lot when I was growing up. When I was 10 they were totally ready to get a divorce but because they were worried about the influence it might have had on me they decided to keep living together. I’m 18 now and even though they don’t fight as much as they used to things don’t really go well between them and their lives and mine would have been much better if they had just gotten it. I feel so guilty every day seeing my mom suffering in the relationship thinking I’m the reason her life is what it is rn. Although growing up with divorced parents sucks I’m sure it’s much better than kids growing up by parents who don’t love and trust each other.

I appreciate the many emotions you feel for your parents but understand that men who want to be fathers understand if they don't maintain a healthy relationship with their sons they will end up like Justin K who seems to have a much stronger relationship with his mother. Sadly mothers don't value/understand the importance of a father-son relationship and instead seem to want to replace the father's role in providing for and raising the child. Lastly, the decision to split up sounds nice but rarely does it ever work as 90% of divorces are handled by states, and most states have made it so women are incentivized to get divorced by allowing them ownership of kids and property while monetizing the entire family court system and it brings in a lot of money for the states. (This is information for straight men as the child in the said video is a boy)
I went through something similar and we’re the same age as well! My mom had said she wanted to divorce my dad, but when i told her she should, she said she couldn’t for me. It felt more miserable to listen to them argue often and know that they weren’t compatible together than to live in separate homes. They were probably scared that divorcing would make their culture look down on them or something.
I believe cheaters do not deserve second chances especially if it’s over a period of time. Now your partner is stuck with the burden of having to either stay with you unhappy because they love you or move on and still feel the pain of what you did. While it was so easy for you to NOT cheat you still chose to.

Broke up with my boyfriend of 2 years a few months ago for cheating & other things... It was the hardest decision ever bc I still very much love him. Cheating happens a lot, it's easy to navigate situations like this. If you are not happy in your soul and if you think the love is gone, just divorce. You can look after your kid as a single parent without a non-committal, non-loving spouse.

I was cheated on once, I chose to forgive and rebuild trust, then 2 years later he cheated again. Those 2 years reaffirmed that I am a loving, understanding, and supportive spouse and that his selfish character was never going to change. I honestly feel like she resented the whole relationship when she openly admitted she cheated and just wanted to do her own thing with no care towards her spouse even though yes he did cheat. She clearly made her mind up long ago and just wanted reassurance. She wanted to live that single life after being tied up for so long
I don’t see why it matters if it was “just sex” or not. Don’t cheat on your lover. I found like 3 days ago my father cheated on my mother for the third time with a girl younger than his daughter. I went through their text msgs, voice msgs, sexting etc. I have no respect for him now. My older brother doesn't see eye to eye with him. I have never seen my mother truly happy since the cheating started. Also she lost her sleep as well. Me and my brother don't talk or associate with him anymore. I have trust issues with people now. People who don’t have kids will never understand these type of situations, (coming from someone who doesn’t have any) But coming from parents who stayed together for the kids, by my preteens I knew that they weren’t together. The hatred and the coldness that I felt from both it was horrible, being in a house were no affection was being shown. Either way divorced or “together” it does some damage, I would even go out of my way to say that it’s impossible not to traumatize a kid.
I mean if my partner cheated once and came clean on their own (without any prompting or accusations) from me, and would seem genuinely sorry and was making an effort I would consider forgiving. Becouse since they came clean by themselves I would still be able to trust them. But idk if this ever happened in real life.

So many people say to stay for the kids, but as someone who's parents "stayed for the kids" I can say it's a terrible idea. Kids learn from their parents and their parents' relationships. Even if no one tells the kid he cheated, they'll usually find out eventually. Even if they don't, the dysfunction can build up and kids will think that's normal and acceptable.
And when you find out, it’s really horrible. I remember feeling so weird afterwards. Every memory from my childhood was tainted :(

Yes. I was 5 when it came to light my dad cheated (emotional and physical affair) on my mom. My youngest brother was just born, and my sister (3) didn’t understand what was going on. My mom stayed and the cheating never stopped; it’s been almost 20 years. My relationship to my father is tumultuous and I have no respect for him (and my mom for a long time too for not leaving him). As the oldest, my mom would tell me all about their struggling relationship and when I asked her why she didn’t leave, she’d always say it’s because of us. We kids grew up feeling like a burden to her. If the parents relationship isn’t healthy, don’t stay. It fucks up your kids worse than getting a divorce.

Because regardless of whether he knows or not, that decision isn't coming from a mutual desire to have a relationship. It sounds like "Well you cheated, so you can't be mad if I slept with someone else." And that's an unhealthy position to put herself in. You parents are supposed to show you how you're supposed to interact with other people. If they are happily married in a monogamous relationship, great. If they are happy in some kind of polyamorous relationship, also great. As long as you are in a healthy relationship, your child will learn how to communicate, how to trust, etc.
Cheating is breaking the trust of your partner(s). For some, a kiss can be cheating. For others, sex might not be cheating, but having an emotional connection with someone else is. Cheating, in whatever form, has no place in a loving relationship. If you hurt your partner by doing something they explicitly told you would hurt them, then you're a bad partner, and will possibly teach your child how to be a bad partner.
I hate how some people think it’s acceptable to stay with someone who cheated on them just for something purely physical. It really shows that your partner has no respect for you if they will sleep with someone they don’t really care about.

I hate when people bring up “staying for the kids” like absolutely not. Yes how they’re impacted is greatly important but not a reason to stay. I want to teach my kids that yes people can make mistakes but some mistakes are unforgivable. I want them to know that choosing yourself and your happiness is important as well. I want them to know that you shouldn’t be with someone who doesn’t put you first and doesn’t show you the respect and love you deserve.
She sounds so much happier after leaving. I'm so happy she chose to do what makes her happy, instead of staying in an environment where you have to look over your shoulder, question everything, and know that if he did it once, he could just as easily do it again. If he cheated and she’s currently cheating, then none of y’all are actually interested in staying together. Divorce and move on if your child is “only” a minute factor in her relationship with her husband. Otherwise, that’s a really messy dynamic.

This did not make me teary eyed at all. I've seen things that tugged at my emotions more, this was not one of those cases.
For me, cheating is unforgiveable and does irrevocable damages to a relationship. It will make your partner lose trust in you, become paranoid on whether or not you will cheat again and affect their self esteem. Who does that to someone they love? Cheating only occurs when that person does not love the other person enough.

That's what happened to one of my cousins. Her ex-husband had multiple affairs with older women because he had abandonment issues with his mom. He only saw her as baby machine.
Once is too many times. Cheating is never a mistake, you don’t cheat by accident. In order to cheat you take a decision and that decision means that you don’t respect your partner and that you broke the trust of the relationship.

As a student who will eventually be a marriage and family therapist, I would suggest couples therapy because it is not just for couples who stay together. It is also for couples who wish to separate or divorce amicably and learn to peacefully coparent. It can also help people who are still deciding if they want to stay together or separate. Very helpful for her at any stage.

my friends fiancé cheated on her, she was pregnant with his kid while he was hoeing around but she stayed because of the baby. A lot of people make the choice to stay for the kids and i understand that but also in the end you have to think about your mental health and your life too. You guys might be even more toxic staying together and damaging the child more than separating.

My parents fought a-lot when I was growing up. When I was 10 they were totally ready to get a divorce but because they were worried about the influence it might have had on me they decided to keep living together. I’m 18 now and even though they don’t fight as much as they used to things don’t really go well between them and their lives and mine would have been much better if they had just gotten it. I feel so guilty every day seeing my mom suffering in the relationship thinking I’m the reason her life is what it is rn.
Although growing up with divorced parents sucks I’m sure it’s much better than kids growing up by parents who don’t love and trust each other.

I appreciate the many emotions you feel for your parents but understand that men who want to be fathers understand if they don't maintain a healthy relationship with their sons they will end up like Justin K who seems to have a much stronger relationship with his mother. Sadly mothers don't value/understand the importance of a father-son relationship and instead seem to want to replace the father's role in providing for and raising the child. Lastly, the decision to split up sounds nice but rarely does it ever work as 90% of divorces are handled by states, and most states have made it so women are incentivized to get divorced by allowing them ownership of kids and property while monetizing the entire family court system and it brings in a lot of money for the states. (This is information for straight men as the child in the said video is a boy)
I went through something similar and we’re the same age as well! My mom had said she wanted to divorce my dad, but when i told her she should, she said she couldn’t for me. It felt more miserable to listen to them argue often and know that they weren’t compatible together than to live in separate homes. They were probably scared that divorcing would make their culture look down on them or something.
I believe cheaters do not deserve second chances especially if it’s over a period of time. Now your partner is stuck with the burden of having to either stay with you unhappy because they love you or move on and still feel the pain of what you did. While it was so easy for you to NOT cheat you still chose to.

Broke up with my boyfriend of 2 years a few months ago for cheating & other things... It was the hardest decision ever bc I still very much love him. I wanted to try to mend the relationship over these past few months but I just couldn’t fully trust him. I just recently decided to cut all ties with him. No more communication or seeing each other. I’m still healing from it. It’s still very hard but i can’t wait to gain my confidence back & fall in love with someone who deserves my love.

It's not a tough situation, it's easy peasy.
Cheating happens a lot, it's easy to navigate situations like this. If you are not happy in your soul and if you think the love is gone, just divorce. You can look after your kid as a single parent without a non-committal, non-loving spouse.
"The best support sometimes comes from strangers" is soooo true. That's why before I use random online chat just to hear people's opinion and advice regarding my situation. I was cheated on once, I chose to forgive and rebuild trust, then 2 years later he cheated again. Those 2 years reaffirmed that I am a loving, understanding, and supportive spouse and that his selfish character was never going to change. Lessoned learned: don't waste your time; find someone that actually gives a damn about your (and your childrens') wellbeing - because that person would never cheat.

My mum and dad split when I was about 4, can't even remember the guy and so happy they split. My brother who's a bit older said that it was tense all the time and it was just a house of screaming, I'm so glad I didnt have to go through all that. I don’t see why it matters if it was “just sex” or not. Don’t cheat on your lover. There shouldn’t be a second chance after he/she disrespects the relationship along with the things you’ve built and history you both have together. It’s an unforgivable act in my opinion and there’s really no way you can forgive someone for cheating without feeling a bit embarrassed. Noone deserves to feel this way about their partner when there is someone out there that wouldn’t even think to put you through those emotions to begin with.

I found like 3 days ago my father cheated on my mother for the third time with a girl younger than his daughter. I went through their text msgs, voice msgs, sexting etc. I have no respect for him now. My older brother doesn't see eye to eye with him. I have never seen my mother truly happy since the cheating started. Also she lost her sleep as well. Me and my brother don't talk or associate with him anymore. I have trust issues with people now. I would say if you are able to support your family, get divorce and be happy. Honestly, once a cheater always a cheater. And all the chase and arguments are not worth it cuz they are not worth it.

People who don’t have kids will never understand these type of situations, (coming from someone who doesn’t have any) But coming from parents who stayed together for the kids, by my preteens I knew that they weren’t together. The hatred and the coldness that I felt from both it was horrible, being in a house were no affection was being shown. Either way divorced or “together” it does some damage, I would even go out of my way to say that it’s impossible not to traumatize a kid.
I can’t believe anyone would say no. There’s absolutely no such thing as “second chances” in this context.
I mean if my partner cheated once and came clean on their own (without any prompting or accusations) from me, and would seem genuinely sorry and was making an effort I would consider forgiving. Becouse since they came clean by themselves I would still be able to trust them. But idk if this ever happened in real life.
