I love the entire trilogy but God was it much better when the Reapers were Lovecraftian monstrosities. Nothing was known about them, they were ominous and unknowable, their goals and origin were beyond us. Then Leviathan/ME3 happened.
I don't think ME3 gave too much away. I would have been disappointed if the trilogy ended and we never learned *anything* about what the Reapers were. The problem is ME3 rushes through it. Basically all of the backstory on the Reapers is dropped on you in the last five minutes, instead of being appropriately paced out throughout the game (or even throughout the trilogy... since ME2 kinda forgot the Reapers existed and spent an entire game setting up Cerberus).
@@Jack-sy6di couldn’t agree more. IMO, Mass Effect 1 had the best story because its biggest moments (much like a good detective story) were slowly drip fed and built up to before the big reveals at the end of game. ME2 and 3 just kinda said “eff it” and dumped reveals without build up, making it fall flat and feel like a rushed exposition dump.
I'll be honest, given the ghost boy conversation already explaining the brief gist of what Leviathan goes into detail, I liked that Leviathan gave purpose to them; its a tragedy, a race of ancient and powerful beings thought themselves god like and attempted to tighten their subjugation of the galaxy and were humbled, even as the Reapers themselves believe themselves godlike and one way or another are obliterated, taught the truth of synthesis or controlled by you in the end. The actual endings are dumb, I get the idea they were going for. However, I would have preferred never understanding them, or that if the invasion is stopped in the hypothetical better ME3, that the threat of them lingers- or that they were a race that evolved into AI/godlike things and that eventually through the concept of synthesis any and all races face the potential existential endpoint of becoming something Lovecraftian

Even before ME3, it's weird to look back at Sovereign's dialogue dialogue in this game given ME2 revealed Reapers create more of their kind using organics. Sovereign doesn't even seem to care about that goal and just wants to exterminate organics out of spite against beings he considers inferior.
Sovereign probably also just liked to stir shit. He was out to confuse people and hide the his real plans. Also reapers are the pinacle of evolution, a form of existence that organics can not comprehend: they are organic constructs, hybrid machines and organics. The machine intelligence created the reapers as a solution to the organics vs synthetics question. In that sense Sovereign sees organics and synthetics as both inferior and flawed lifeforms that do need to be destroyed. I haven't personally found anything that red cons what sovereign says in the trilogy, except for the no beginning part, but that is easily chalked up to sovereign just not wanting to divulge that kind of interformation.
@@nevermore7285 That sounds plausible. In universe it is speculated that Sovereign isn't as confident as he makes himself out to be given the monkey wrench thrown into his plans. We also saw with Harbinger that the Reapers do not like it when their control over events is disrupted.

For five years, I feared the Reapers. They were malevolent, omnipotent, incomprehensible, and awe-inspiring. Now we know that they are supposedly the playthings of a god-child...I have a difficult time buying that.
Hearing the phrase, "There is a realm of existence so far beyond your own you cannot even imagine it. I am beyond your comprehension." Made me feel fear because I thought I will never know who they truly are. That they came from alternate reality or some hellish dimension. One point I thought they were just ships of a very old alien race but possessed by some kind of powerful evil ghosts. But now, ME3 through all that out the window. Sometimes to have the greatest villains you should never give them an origin story. Lack of understand = unknown = fearing the unknown.
+Death Knight Ebonshield Yup, that's what made the Borg in Star Trek such a great enemy. No origin story, only vague motivations, and a relentless attitude. Funny that the Reapers were based on the Borg so heavily but then they botched it by giving them a homeworld, creators, a convoluted motivation, etc...
I interpret it as this. The Leviathans built the bodies, but only because the Reapers whispers to them from their unknown realms. Influencing them so that they may have vessels to allow hem to enter our plain of existence. To use to impose "order" on the "mad" galaxy they had watched for so long.
I never thought it was some supernatural thing or the like but I asked my self a lot "What happened that was so bad that drove some one to create the reapers to create a cycle of destruction to harvest all advanced life in the galaxy, what was so bad that drove them to madness in that why." but I always came to the conclusion that what ever it must have been I would be unable to understand with out experiencing it my self. But ME3 happened, and don't get me wrong, I am not a ME3 hater. I love ME3 right up until the end but the end did not spoil the fun I had with it.
This voice would be pretty sick for a future iteration of Soundwave. EDIT: Turns out Peter Jessop HAS been Soundwave before, namely in the Revenge Of The Fallen tie-in game and he did a pretty good job iirc. He was also the OG voice for Wesker in the original Resident Evil game.
Am I the only one who wants to secretly build a satellite and send it into deep space and beam this back at Earth so that astrophysicists think they intercepted an alien message? Just to troll the FUCK out of them?
You can't especially remember any moment of Harbinger's talk (with exception of those annoying "Assuming direct control" etc), that's the only conversation with Sovereign, and... well... that is one of the most memorable moments of the whole ME1. When you talked with him and when you finally fought with him you were just scared about the whole invasion. It was like "Omfg! If he's one and he's so epic and powerful then how the #!@$%!@$^& we will fight with thousands or even millions of them?"
based on what i got....every reaper has freedom of expression but adhere to the purpose put forth by the intelligence...but the transition of destruction for destruction to salvation through destruction was as early as me2. me3 continued that trend with the reaper on rannoch...then the intelligence talks to you and explains....dont mind having the answers but not having them wouldnt have made a difference imo.
I remember my dad had one of those oversized tvs and his audio was messed up so when I was playing this scene on it Sovereign's voice was nothing But bass and I couldn't even understand him
As it is in reality, one group of humans came to Earth, and since they humans were physically equal to the native humans, the invading party chose to use its technological advantage over humans. At that point, it became a planetary invasion of humans by humans. When the other humans (at war with the invading humans), learned of this they came back to Earth earth to fight the humans.

1. I can comprehend you being right in front of me, so how are you beyond my comprehension? 2. Aren't you a mutation and an accident if you had to evolve too? 3. Maybe, but you will have to end eventually, so you can't be the end of everything, because something will probably exist after you end. 4. Are you not one of those societies which you speak of? You have evolved and now are basking in your own glory? What makes you so special. 5. So basically, you're God then? That's the only way you couldn't have a "beginning".
Personally Sovereign is one of the best villains of all time. There was no negotiating, begging, threatening or pleading with him. He was the type of villain that didn't care what your gripe was, he had made it his job to clear the board and getting in his way just meant that you got to go first.
Sovereign, definitely Harbinger wasn't bad But Sovereign was more like a hurricane or a tornado. An unstoppable force of nature as opposed to an angry creature
There is a realm of existence so far beyond your own you cannot even imagine it. I am beyond your comprehension. I am Sovereign. Villains don't, can't get any better than Sovereign.
I like Sovereign's voice and quotes much better. Shows a very dark and powerful side which is a nightmare for us but indeed a great source of intelligence can be heard too. Harbinger is just LAZAAA, LAZAAA, BOOM and sounds like a pissed off mercenary.
Sovereign's knowledge is just overpowering. His Philosophical threats are just so scary, he doesn't threaten to kill you, but rather he makes you feel minuscule, small, and worthless. His overpowering knowledge makes the victim feel helpless. I prefer Sovereign's quotes over Harbinger's, plus Sovereign's voice sounds better.
@bvolcano723 Harbinger was obsessed with Shepard besause he destroyed Sovereign. Also, it wanted to use Shepard for the human Reaper. Also, all reapers look slightly different from each other. If you notice the reaper behind Harbinger in this picture, it sort of resembles a scarab beetle. As well as that, Sovereign was meant play a huge part in the reaper invasion, even though it failed. This is probably why it looks more powerful and is royal purple.
plus....if we can get an ending that a) fills plotholes b)gives closure and c)creates the desire to replay the game, then overall we should be okay. i think there are some little things fans should be aware of. things that have been expressed in this convo

Funny that the Reapers were based on the Borg so heavily but then they botched it by giving them a homeworld, creators, a convoluted motivation, etc...
reapers are just real big roombas
What if hellish dimension is ours?
Future Siri Conversation
This voice would be pretty sick for a future iteration of Soundwave.
EDIT: Turns out Peter Jessop HAS been Soundwave before, namely in the Revenge Of The Fallen tie-in game and he did a pretty good job iirc.
He was also the OG voice for Wesker in the original Resident Evil game.
This is what Soundwave needs to sound like.
Am I the only one who wants to secretly build a satellite and send it into deep space and beam this back at Earth so that astrophysicists think they intercepted an alien message?
Just to troll the FUCK out of them?
jesus christ man i got goosebumps :P that was amazeing
You can't especially remember any moment of Harbinger's talk (with exception of those annoying "Assuming direct control" etc), that's the only conversation with Sovereign, and... well... that is one of the most memorable moments of the whole ME1. When you talked with him and when you finally fought with him you were just scared about the whole invasion. It was like "Omfg! If he's one and he's so epic and powerful then how the #!@$%!@$^& we will fight with thousands or even millions of them?"
Oh damn :D I listened it through multiple times and still didn't notice it.
Well maybe my focus wasn't on it's greatest peak at 3 AM.
I don't even play Mass Effect 3, but this voice is absolutely amazing. This alone may convince me to play.
Yeah, did you?
@@onepumpchump1238 I never did. apparently the voice wasn't enough to convince me🥲
Yay! this is from when the series was wonderful! :D
Javik: WTf are u guys doing here? .....Oh shit, Sovereign? But,u didn't died?
ಠಠ_ಠಠ
You're a machine! And machines can be broken!
why do the really evil guys always have a relaxing voice>
His voice is too much for my headphones, its awesomeness is at capacity.
Damn, that gave me goosebumps.
Brr, this sends shivers down my back.
based on what i got....every reaper has freedom of expression but adhere to the purpose put forth by the intelligence...but the transition of destruction for destruction to salvation through destruction was as early as me2. me3 continued that trend with the reaper on rannoch...then the intelligence talks to you and explains....dont mind having the answers but not having them wouldnt have made a difference imo.
I remember my dad had one of those oversized tvs and his audio was messed up so when I was playing this scene on it Sovereign's voice was nothing But bass and I couldn't even understand him
I listen to this at least once a day.
Yeah, sovereign's in an existence so far beyond he can smell his own colon
These were messages sent to humanity. Ask SETI.
Your mind is a mirror not holding anything except the ghosts and goblins you are haunted with before you were six years old. 🏁 Your true nature is in harmony with The One Turning Cosmo's... Getting Ready to Look #Smile 👁️🌴👁️

Ultron? Is that you
I think a central problem in the mass effect games is that no plot could EVER live up to Sovregins words.
IF the extended ending does its job and makes the 3 choices feel different with little details, then it did a good job and itll make me WANT to go back and play again and again and again.
"fumbling in ignorance, incapable of understanding." Ah, the first time, and all the following. The memories...
I love sovereign's voice
that's the point
It makes Sovereign's words about the coming of the Reapers and how "our numbers will darken the sky of every world" have much more effect.
not all humans are like andromedian humans
Darth Vader: "I have the most terrifying voice of all time"
*Sovereign has entered the chat*
@MofoCheesy OMG, that was epic! You just made my day. Thx a lot.
This is precisely how I'd imagine Lucifer would sound like
Sovereign would deliver an impactful TED speech. :)
Sovereign, definitely
Harbinger wasn't bad
But Sovereign was more like a hurricane or a tornado. An unstoppable force of nature as opposed to an angry creature
a masterpiece of words
I like how the sovereign quotes video has a picture of harbinger
I want my GPS to have this voice 🥰😊
2 people can't imagine a realm of existence beyond there own
There is a realm of existence so far beyond your own you cannot even imagine it. I am beyond your comprehension. I am Sovereign.
Villains don't, can't get any better than Sovereign.
This gives me goosebumps
Your utility will be realized to it's fullest extent.
