I've always let GRUB install itself to MBR and manage Windows and/or Linux startup, but of course this meant getting nervous every time when updating either OS. This is a very clean solution.

Great tutorial. For newer pc's booting using UEFI, EASY BCD wont work but you can make ubuntu bootloader(GRUB2) as default from BIOS settings. This will allow you to choose between ubuntu and windows.

Same for me. Tried to disable secure boot and switch from UEFI to legacy boot, but i just got at black screen that told me to plug in a device with bootup.
Simple and easy tutorial to follow. Just want to add few points based on my experience After selecting “Device for bootloader installation” and clicking on Install Now, I got a warning saying that - No EFI System Partition was found. The system will likely not be able to boot successfully, and the installation process may fail. So I created an EFI partition along with “root” and “swap area”. And then started installation. But after running for a few minutes, the installation failed by giving the error that “Executing ‘grub-install/dev/sda5’ failed’. Then I restarted the system and removed the pendrive. But now it was not able to boot Windows nor ubuntu. I was getting a black screen saying that “No Bootable device - insert boot disk and press any key”. I googled this problem and tried a few solutions but that didn’t work for me. Then I inserted the pendrive again, loaded Ubuntu and clicked on “Try Ubuntu” and tried to fix the “grub-install” error using boot-repair. But it reported another error - “LegacyWindows detected. The boot of your PC is in EFI mode. You may want to retry after changing it to BIOS-compatibility/CSM/Legacy mode.” Again I googled this error and tried a few things, but did not solve my problem. Finally I decided to reinstall Ubuntu again using the pendrive. This time I removed the EFI partition previously created and ignored the warning and started installing. This worked fine.
to solve this problem, you have to delete one volume of your hard disk, move all the data of the volume and paste it in the other volume of harddisk, now go to disk management , delete the empty volume. now right any other volume and click on extend, then extend totaly. now shrink a 30 gb from the extended volume. And now do the ubuntu installation , it won't wont claim that area is unusuable, it will claim it as free space. Thank you.

LETS BE HONEST, THIS HAS GOT TO BE TJE SIMPLEST, EFFECTIVE AND NO B.S. APPROACH YOU'VE BEEN DYING TO LOOK FOR...KUDOS BRUH
Simple and easy tutorial to follow. Just want to add few points based on my experience
After selecting “Device for bootloader installation” and clicking on Install Now, I got a warning saying that -
No EFI System Partition was found.
You may want to retry after changing it to BIOS-compatibility/CSM/Legacy mode.”
Again I googled this error and tried a few things, but did not solve my problem.
Finally I decided to reinstall Ubuntu again using the pendrive. This time I removed the EFI partition previously created and ignored the warning and started installing. This worked fine.
same here. trying to install it anyway. how did you manage this issue?
I got a error- bootloader install failed, any help is appreciated!
Have the same problem did you figure it out
When I create an unallocated space by shrinking my Volume - Ubuntu claims this area is unusable and will not let me do anything with it all.
to solve this problem, you have to delete one volume of your hard disk, move all the data of the volume and paste it in the other volume of harddisk, now go to disk management , delete the empty volume. now right any other volume and click on extend, then extend totaly. now shrink a 30 gb from the extended volume. And now do the ubuntu installation , it won't wont claim that area is unusuable, it will claim it as free space. Thank you.
u have to make that partition primary... ease us can do that very easily
Windows understand 4 partitions only, it will start working once you bring your Linux to install partition under 4. good luck!
Excellent tutorial, extremely precise and well produced. Thanks :)
Just watched it to set up a friend's machine to dual boot. Great video...worked like a charm the first time :)
Thanks!
