- On the first episode of MeatEater Hunts, Steven Rinella and Janis Putelis head to California for a spearfishing trip with expert skin divers Greg Font and Alex Reynaud. After learning the ropes, the guys head off in search of fresh sushi and fish tacos. They hunt the reefs and kelp forest looking for yellowtail while filling up the stringer with sheepshead, bonito, and calico bass. The underwater scenery is so mesmerizing and the fish so damn delicious that it leaves Steve wondering what he’s been doing chasing elk for the last 20 years.

It's a meat bee.
@@gannonscheidt690 Same thing buddy
@@BLEVLS oh ok. 😄
hell yeah you need to put more seasons on netflix
It's coming, he confirmed in a podcast.
Hey man if you go to MyOutdoorTV right now and use the promo code STAYHOME you get a free 30 day trial and they have all of the original seasons of MeatEater. I have been binging for the past couple days.
I finished the last one the same night I started, they need to make longer seasons!
@@timthompsondp There's like 8 seasons you can download on piratebay.
@@treyjackson4402 I love this, they cut some of the older seasons which had my some of my favorite episodes. Time to kill time while looking to see if I can still get turkey hunt off this year.
I really enjoy the more natural interactions and ball busting in this episode vs the Meateater episodes. It's not as polished and sensored, very refreshing. It's just like being out with a good group of buddies and having a good time. Well done. More of this please!
Steve Lessard I agree! Way more lifelike.
Matter of fact it’s exactly how me and my buddies act.
If you like that style watch "the hunting public". As far as hunting shows go its the goat 🐐
held my breath the entire damn episode...samba'd AF
Yeah, we were down in the Gulf, fishing bonito. Robert, have you ever been down to the Gulf on the bonito run? It's gorgeous.
Are bonito fish big?
@@ryanstevens4477 Well they're considered a game fish so.... yeah .
DAMNIT DALE
great comment thread lmao
They are Considered a “trophy” fish.... so yeah... they’re pretty big!
The absolute best show, hands down. Catch it and cook it, gives more meaning to the entire experience.
In these trying times we can all count on Steve to deliver motivation and inspiration. I swear I haven't managed to go hunting or fishing once with my buddies without your name coming up in conversation.
As an avid spearo for 6 years. From Australia and back, this awesome dude !!! Sone if the best hunting is below the waves 🤙
I love the Channel Islands. They fed me while I was living in Santa Barbara. So beautiful.
Teach me the ways.
My favorite way to consume MeatEater content -podcast talking about something they filmed -watching what they filmed -connecting the dots to the podcast
Yellowtail is by far my favorite pelagic to eat. I moved away from So Cal but I always long to go back and fish for these guys, oh and they put up a great fight too!
Love seeing Steve fish the area I grew up in and swim through the same kelp forests I have for so many years
My grandfather was an OG skindiver in CA and Mexico in the 40s and 50s. Some of his pictures are absolutely amazing. I miss that old timer. Watching this made my day. Thanks boys.
I agree! Steve you have THE best show on earth! Very entertaining, especially when you share the passion for the outdoors. Awesome job keep up the good work, blessing to you👊🏾🦌🦃🦆🐿🐻😁
Steve is the man!
I freaking love your content Mr. Rinella I've seen all your Netflix series and its really gave me a new look on wildlife and I can't wait to be able to hunt one day
i wish you the best of luck friend
I grew up diving off of this point they’re on. It’s awesome seeing the crew dive it and see why it’s so special!
Greg and Alex are both awesome guys right on my favorite meat eater episode.
Great to see Rob Allen gear in the USA. Rob is an ex parks board game ranger in South Africa who loved spearfishing. Together with Geremy Williams a South African National Spearfishing champ, they developed and now export Rob Allen gear all over the world. Proud to call them my friends.
Steve is ONE BAD ASS DUDE!!true American man....no ego...surrounds himself with humble skilled outdoorsmen!I enjoy his ventures outside the USA...so cool to see him interact with different cultures! He respects all....nature, wilderness, people, culture! so refreshing that I had to write this and let somebody know!!Keep them coming!!
Love this, and I felt like during the podcast with these guys that something like this was in the works.
I really enjoy the "raw" language. seriously. It's more immersive.
Keep up the amazing work gentlemen. The content is always enjoyed.
I heard those seals at the start and thought "oh shit, Steven's finally going to start clubbing seals". :)
😂
On this Meateater episode..... THUMP. CLUBBIN SEALSSSSSSS
"I line up my club on that seal, I go to swing then my club goes *click*! Next thing I know BAM! The seal is charging at me!"
@@dirtrida274 😂😂😂 I almost died laughing
I would pay to see that😂
I love watching you hunt all over the world. It's so cool to see you hunting where I hunt! The golden cathedrals of the Macrocystis pyrifera. Hello from Malibu.
I needed this! So glad to see new episodes! Love Meateater!
Born and raised, I'm a proud California native. Cheers Steve.
Ive had my new speargun waiting for me in Hawaii all winter... now I'm quarantined in California dreaming of getting underwater. Love the podcast on this episode too!
Tyler Wallasch Same! Got a new speargun and been waiting to hit the water. My buddy went to the Sonoma coast few weeks ago and fish and game were pulling people over on highway 1.
i grew up in Baja California and there's nothing better than some fresh fish right out of the sea.
This was a lot of fun! Love ya Steve! Keep it coming!
Glad to see you still doing your thing during the pandemic. Keep up the good work.
One of your best episodes, right up there with your Alaskan episodes!! We need more of those please.
MORE. MORE. MORE. This is the content we need. Awesome job guys!
Back in my home area! So glad that yall finally picked up spearfishing! I have been spearfishing my whole life and recently became a "late adult onset hunter" after watching your show! Stoked to see more of this content!!
I'm not a huge fan of fish but a fresh caught and cooked fish - I can't say no to that! Great video Steve and team thanks. 👍👍
I’ve been marathoning YBS Youngbloods videos so this fits right in!
Digging the score on this one. Whoever worked it did a great job.
This crew is so damn good at putting a show together that highlights the hunt and the meal. Now I want some sushi.
Great stuff. The diving here in CA is absolutely wonderful and I can't wait to get back into the water! Glad you got to enjoy the beauty of the channel islands. Next time go during lobster season and grab a few bugs!
The Podcast for this episode was my favorite. Especially when the sharks were mentioned after the fact.
Beautiful. Nice change of scenery.
What a fantastic film! I want more!
Was literally looking up swells while at work because I’ve been itching to get a dive in. Now I’m drinking coffee watching this, next best thing 🤙
12:10 what a set of balls Steve must have to not even flinch at that hornet on his hand.
He did get bit by a bullet ant in an episode of meat eater haha
Man do I love what you guys put out. Watching you guys do your thing is the next best thing to doing it myself. keep it up amigos!
I love that you're getting into spearfishing!! I'm a spearfisherman and I've been watching Meat Eater religiously since I found out about you! Great content! I wish spearfishing had a prodigious writer like yourself as a spokesman like you are for hunting. Dan Silveira crossover episodes???!!!
love the channel islands!! great content as always!
Listened to this experience on the podcast a while ago! So cool to be able to see it!
Awesome stuff! I'm digging all the extra Meat Eater stuff on the Tube
Loved this video, hope you do more spearfishing and diving. Thanks!
Great Yellowtail! I wish we could have seen the shot and fight! I bet it was a good fight! Looks like Santa Barbara Island. Caught some of my first White Seabass there. Loved this episode!!!
I love watching these shows.
I live in the central coast. We fish these waters for rock cod and lings. Thanks for the great video showing it. Its beautifully done 👌 hope you guys enjoyed it down here and the fishing
Those crab
s were so cool. Also, awesome episode.
“California, what a shit hole” lmaooo true that.
That’s why they’re all leaving
Nice thx for putting spear fishing a little bit more on the map.
Meat eater is the greatest, please keep posting content!!!
You got so lucky with the yellow tail, awesome job.
Thanks for sharing the experience. It would be cool if on the podcast you could put a little bit of time into some of the challenges in spearfishing like species identification, size/slot limits, interpreting regulations, etc.
Dive safe!
Great episode. It is always great to see a new spear fisherman have a good hunt. I know you always try your best to follow all the laws and with fishing there are many of them. The California Sheephead is one of our only fish you cannot fillet before reaching land. It's a silly rule and only helps DFW identify and size the fish if they decide to check you out, but it is a rule.
Never could do something like that but those fish looked delicious
We need new documentary length episodes of MeatEater steve!
Please be careful when trying these new swim hunts! Stay safe man!
Dont want to lose you!
Love all your work man! Keep safe!!
Absolutely amazing
Keep going
Stoked ya got to enjoy our local islands!
This is the first time I ever seen you guys in California, I would love to see a public land deer hunt out here
Awesome Steve! Thanks.
THANK YOU for making more content during this corona virus BS
Thanks for coming to California! Great video! Should have put a GoPro on you, Steven, and Janis to get a good POV during your spearo time.
This was a great episode!
Your a bad ass hunter on land brother, makes sense you would be good at hunting in the ocean too. Stoked to see you dabble in spearfishing! Keep up the good content!
Fantastic episode. Keep it coming bois
Bonita--bleed right away, ice/saltwater slurry, filet, olive oil and garlic, salt pepper, flash fry--same day. Insanely good.
So jealous , I wish I was on the boat!!! Love spearfishing
Thank you Meateater!
Yep! Spearfishing, surfing, and mountain biking keep me in California. All the beatniks make me second guess this place though. On another note, you guys got lucky with those guys. You just got a free freedive/spearfishing course from experienced divers. Rad show!
I don't eat fish (allergies) and I'm afraid of water, but god damn i love watching this show. Amazing new show Steve. Big Fan.
Well done fellas. Love me some RUclips episodes. I’ll take it.
Nice!
Quarantine entertainment!!!
Watching them all share that fish off the same spoon makes me miss the days before Covid.
I am a scuba diver and I love the ocean and really want to spear fish someday
this...was special. lucky I used to do that at the beaches of brazil when I trained there. we also got smaller fish and used them for crab bait the next early morning... 1h got us 80 crabs one morning. Awsome stuff guys!
I love how Steve questions every aspect of instruction always asking why to see if the person can justify what seems to be rediculous 😅
He sounds like a 5 year old kid, except maybe that is why he is so knowledgeable about so many different things pertaining to the outdoors. He asks and learns. So many adults seem to lazy these days to ask and learn.
I think he asked for the viewers too. If he Steve can’t explain it us, then he wants the instructor to explain it.
This is my favorite video of yours please do more
11:45 sheepshead are my favorite fish taco/ceviche meat
Steve almost said “transition” and had to stop himself 😂🙏🏽
In today's climate, you need to know what their pronouns are..... 😳🤯
Great video guys! Need more underwater footage. Ya gotta get ya some bugs next time, do a little night diving. Hint Halibuts eyes glow in your dive light when sticking out of the sand. 😉 Great to see some underwater hunting, keep it coming!
Love the spearfishing content
Remember the podcast and now some visuals to along with it. Howdy from West Michigan boys!
that was great. educational and entertaining :)
Just found meat eater today. Gonna be watching all of it now 😂
Wow this was great I love your fishing content and I would like to see more of thsi
You want easy... go to the grocery store. Awesome quote steve.
maan i'm a spearfishing hunter for most of the time and i'm a bit disapointed that you didn't film taht much of the action when hunting all this fish.. As the same way of showing all the process to get close to a deer and everythin I think you could have done it here..! Hope you will continue on spearfishing it's amazing and steel, you were in an awaesome place! Thank's for feeding us in this bad time for hunters
Slip Tips to Grizzly Stiks.......love it
Huge fan. Just saw the movie stars in the sky. Wow!!! Looking forward to more episodes of meat eater on Netflix. Can’t find em though.
i loovveee spearfishing! did it in New Zealand near stewart island
Such great technique stunning video makes me wanna go back and try my own hand at it. The vibes, wakes my instinct I wanna go, setup a playlist with Metallica and Delta Parole and go off into my own world right this moment.
Heck yeah I like seeing that hat let's Go Pine Flat Lake!
My spiritual happy place, I adore the Channel Islands. Last trip we pulled up a few 6 foot wolf eels and that was so damn cool
Such a sick episode, and can we appreciate Steve's taste in shirts? #4Runner
"Oh no Steven's comin!" Lol sounds like the kid that everybody thought had cooties in elementary school and all the other kids are like "Oh no Steven's comin!" Hahahaha just messin with ya. Love this show
I'm scared shitless of the ocean but man does this look cool.
