He was crappy to Edith but he loved her a lot. Her death was one of the saddest shows in TV history.
The ending of this episode remains priceless. Paraphrased "All the great things we can do now that you forged my name!"

"Oh yeah, you got one hell of a nerve" Edith usually doesn't swear but Archie had it coming. If Archie forged my signature to buy a stupid ass bar I would be pissed off and the next thing I would have him sign would be divorce papers.
The bar made him a fairly wealthy man particularly when the restaurant went in. He had vision.

@@lauraIngleswilder74 I do get it. I watched it too. I’m referring to the abuse. The abuse was wrong.
I always felt bad for the way Edith was treated by Archie. If I had a girlfriend or a wife I would never do anything to hurt them. But some people just don't care about others but themselves.
Although in this case, his business venture would prove to be quite successful. That said, he didn't treat his wife with the kindness and respect that I would have.

He did do it as much as the next person, so folks that do things to others, can’t whine and bitch if it eventually happens to them. Maybe Mr. Holier Than Thou shouldn’t have committed a crime by forging someone else’s name on a document, and Mike wouldn’t have been able to say anything about it; let’s start there.

@@jamesorsby7553it had nothing to do with Mike. He lived in Archie's house rent free. True, Archie committed a crime, but in the end Edith forgave him. Mike and Gloria no longer lived with Archie and Edith at this point. Mike had no right to pry into Archie's personal business and question how he got the mortgage on the bar.
People always talk about Archie’s bigotry/racism like that was the worst part about his character. To me, shit like this is far worse. Making stupid remarks about Asians or Catholics or whatever is crude, but it’s nothing compared to the things he did to Edith. That’s just rotten.
This season eight episode is a complete contradiction to the season two episode "The Blockbuster" and the later season nine episode "Edith Versus the Bank." In "The Blockbuster," Archie was about to sell the house to Mr. Byrd and didn't need Edith's signature. Now, six years later, Edith is a co-owner of the house and her signature is needed to pledge the house as collateral for a loan. Then, a year later in "Edith Versus the Bank," she can't get a loan for a new television set because her name is not listed on any assets.
You are probably right but it is just a TV serial. Doesn't really matter because it is all made up anyway.
@@lesleywall4186 It was the most radical show on TV when it started. It's anti-Vietnam War basis was terrible when North Vietnam was in fact highly mass-murderous to its own civilian population. Therefore, this here may not be the important element on this show but it was slightly more than just a show.

I always hated how he treated her. But the show was meant to show exactly this type of thing. It was a sarcastic view of how some viewed bigotry, racism, and this type of what is now called spousal abuse. It was meant to showcase and bring to light this exact thing.
In the end, Mike and Gloria, the big liberals, treated each other much worse. Both cheated on the other, they were constantly at each others' throats, and Mike ended up abandoning both her and Joey.
This show was so on point. We need a version of it now. To let all the nasty conservatives know there will always be consequences for their actions. They can’t do whatever they please irregardless. He was a total POS, but the love between them was unyielding. Obviously, after the episode after she passes away.
Archie was always bickering in this show. But then Edith died and the kids moved on in the next show and he seemed a lot happier.

What Archie did was absolutely wrong and Edith should've turned him in because it was a crime. I dislike that he gets away with it because Edith believes in supporting her husband no matter what he does.
