I have one of the 3 Carver Ones in Scotland. Its most definatrly not a city car, its natural home is on the fast twisty country road where it excels. Watching Jay drive there he needs more time behind the wheel as hes really not smooth with it at all. Once you have the hang of it you can confidently throw it into corners far faster than most 4 wheel vehicles and there is none of that wobbling back and forth you see in the video, thats driver induced. As for comparisons as to what it drives likes, its like driving a little fighter jet on the road! (But with much lower fuel burn!).
This is somewhat reassuring, but I still think the only reason I would ever want to drive one would be if I had designed it. That would then lead to questions about what I did with my life. 😂😂 There is actually a form of suspension that will allow you to roll into the corners (essentially the car body hangs like a pendulum) which presumably would be a bit more natural than this but probably induced jacking (though I don't remember as it probably hasn't been used for 50 years and I think was only ever tried on race cars). But what surprises is that that this sort of hydraulic tomfoolery hasn't trickled down into super-cheap hydraulics in production cars. The hydraulic pump can't be drawing much power when you only have 66bhp to play with, so I would have thought this would be a pretty good template for future development.
That is funny I passed a few of these in Scotland last weekend somewhere between Dornoch and Glasgow on the country roads and that is why I was looking them up here, really interesting and looks brilliant.
No matter how many times I see one of these take a corner and not soar off up into the embankment it still makes my bum twitch even watching! A brave man is our JayEmm!
Give us (the dutch) a strictly defined design challenge and you get exactly what you want. If you forget or let go of those goals you get the weirdest and coolest products! I used to work near the factory for these. You saw people zoom by in these every day taking one for a spin. The cargo one does drive around for a local sandwich shop.
Bit surprised that you didn't mention the greatest Dutch car of all times....the DAF, the car that would go just as fast in reverse as it did going forward with its variomatic transmission.
Indeed. DAF's variomatic, better known as Continuous Variable Transmission, was the first commercially successful CVT. It was the only modern automobile technology that was used on public roads BEFORE it was used in racing. In 1993 Williams tested their new car with a CVT and it was significantly faster. Few weeks after testing F1 explicitly banned CVT's for being an unfair advantage.
I paused the video around the 4m mark to angrily come type in the comments about DAF ... thank you for saving me the troubles. Talking about Dutch automotive history and not thinking DAF deserves a mention, preposterous!

As a kid, I remember reading articles about this thing. I think the ironic awkwardness behind this… thing… is that you sit in it and drive it like you would a car, but it turns into corners as a motorcycle would, which is entirely counter-intuitive physics-wise as to how a car would lean going through a turn. If you ever wanted to experience a true cerebral-level fustercluck, this’d be the way to do it.

Nowdays we literally have so many different cool vehicles. There are new carvers, all kinds of scooters with multiple wheels, quads, polaris slingshot etc. If somebody wants something unique there are options. People like crossovers because they are very practical cause they have slightly higher ground clearance great for clearing high curbes and occasional mountain trip, spacious inside while not being overly long or wide, elevated seating that many people like.
As a biker and a driver, I would LOVE even a short drive in a Carver. I have ridden something that is vaguely similar; the Piaggio MP3 which is a three wheeler that has two front wheels and tilts via complex hydraulics and that, while odd and counter-intuitive to start with, I quickly got used to that so I don't doubt the Carver is the same. I suspect the lack of understeer is the use of a bike tyre as motorcycle rubber is generally sticker and grippier than car tyres, and is probably loaded similarly to a normal bike, so it probably is as grippy as it needs to be. Kudos to the owner for buying it and also using it. This is probably one of the coolest vehicles that will ever feature on the channel.

We actually did a testdrive in an 45 km/h electric Carver a few years ago. My wife in the back still dreams about that on bad days. She didn't like it. At 45 km/h! That was the limit for any Carver you could buy then. A couple of weeks after that I bought a Twizy which reaches 90km/h. Also wonky to drive as it can do roundabouts at redicilous speeds because of the very low point of gravity. To be honest the sensation in a Carver is more spectacular. That may be due to the unpredictable leaning while steering. But it was a very memorable experience!
Having owned my Carver One from new and recently been to Carver Earth and drove the EV they are completely different driving experiences like analog and digital
I feel Jay comparing it to a city eco car is missing the point. At that price its a big boys toy. If I was to compile a fantasy 10-20 car garage this would be definitely on the list, maybe 2 so you could do trips in tandem with a mate. Looks amazing fun.

The EV version arein production and I do see them sometimes in NL, There are 45kmh versions for use without driverlicense and 85kmh that are a micro-car.
Anybody remember the Bond company that made three wheelers back in the 1960's. Now 60 years later we are back at the same situation, with small three wheeler cars with small engines. There was also the Heinkel and Reliant. Very light, small vehicles that had very efficient small petrol engines. The EV equivalents do seem to be ricing themselves out of the market. Lotus made some very nice , light and sporty cars and , at the time, they were not too expensive to buy and run. I think we don't have to make cars so big and heavy when there are such light materials available. In Switzerland there seems to be a following for small vehicles, they may be home made, based on bicycles, which are fine if you dont have steep hills. There is an opening in the market for a cheap, socially acceptable , light, efficient vehicle and there are an array of available engines that could be used. We need another Colin Chapman.
When the Aptera hit the roads, I would love to see your review of driving it. Might need to come to the USA but the Aptera is a three-wheel reverse trike, which has more car like features, no tilting.
The van version for Pizza Hut? A dozen or so years ago, Domino's in Bath were running a Renault Twizzy. I had a chat with the driver when I saw it in Morrison's car park, and he reckoned that they only let the managers drive it, not the scooter boys. So it wasn't actually used for deliveries.
Yes it is. I was driving a HGV down Cambridge gardens in London, got out to do my work and I can only presume he was a rep actively gave me a sales pitch while I had half of London behind my lorry waiting for me to move on lol. You can usually see one parked up on Ladbroke Grove, London.
Yes, you see quite a lot of the electric version in the Netherlands already. Two version: 30MPH and one 'somewhat' highway compatible. Driven one, and although it's a funny experience in the first minutes, these are not fun to drive: ESP intervention spoils the real fun.
Wish I'd had one of these back in the day when I had to get a reliant robin. Granted I was coming off a 1000cc katana and wanted to get my car licence as soon as possible. So the idea was to spend a few months in the reliant and then find a friendly driving school man and pay for a couple of lessons just to make sure I didn't have any bad habits 😁 and then use the driving school car to take the test. Well it all worked out ok and I passed first time out in WoodGreen North London you know where all the big houses are, with the wide streets. It was easy. Sold the reliant and bought another bike😂
I wonder what Sir Clive Sinclair thought of them? The electric version is almost the natural successor to his C5. It does look like fun to drive, once you've got the hang of it! Looks like the electric versions are about half the price of the ICE version - maybe something to add to the fleet? Gotta be cheaper to run than another Ferrari!
I love that there’s a cup holder. Spanner seems appropriate. Seeing the Carver on the move, it looks fantastic. Majestic through sweeping bends. I’d prefer it over a microcar, but then I’m a biker. 600kg seems pretty heavy, given my Suzuki GSX1400 is under 330kg fully fuelled, with me on it.
Oh wow, I completely forgot about this car. I remember it from Discovery's Future Cars special; it seemed interesting but weird. I wonder if this could do a lot better with more sophisticated tilt control. That show was a bit trippy, even without weird vehicles like this. Lots of strange editing and scenes that are painfully of that 2007 time. Say, we're only seven years off that show's hypothetical 2030 date. Also, you always roll up the windows for our sake, but your audio setup is so good, we can't hear any wind noise anyway!
I think it was “He’s my partner and also my lover”. Funny anyway. Though all part of normalising the abnormal, according to God’s teaching. Mind you, God was also down on masturbation, which has always struck me as a bit of a killjoy. What’s the harm? Apart from the blindness, obv.
Didn't know you ride motorbikes! Any videos? Would love a video or two for somebody getting into bikes or back into them. I rode a bit as a teen and thinking about getting back into it and now 20yrs later not sure where to begin 😆
I see a Carver up here near Bangor. Always looking stunning. Britain beat the Dutch by some margin to this concept. The Ariel 3 which has a legendary place in British transportation history. Not necessarily for the best reasons but hey… Perhaps a comparison might be …ahem…interesting. I’ll just leave that with you😂
If they were a few years later to be during the wave of scooter popularity, these would probably have handlebars and a cvt gearbox, making it a way better experience.
The company actually had offers from manufacturers during the scooter revival, stating that with handlebars and some other improvements/design updates they would put it into production immediately. The company refused. They've refused multiple scooter/motorcycle orientated redesigns, even for one off customs according to various forums. They have a specific vision for how it is, and handlebars is a deal breaker. Which while odd, I kind of respect. I don't disagree that if would be improved though.
14:30 Y'say that, but Domino's, and lots of other delivery services in Japan use Honda Gyros, basically a (considerably less safe) BMW C1 with the same rear wheel set up as this car. I think the Gyro is a more sensible size, the Carver just seems a bit big all round for leaning as much as it does in a city, especially with a van boot, but it could work? Maybe? If they ever make one.
What an interesting and unique vehicle. I think I would get sea sick (car sick) driving this thing but it would be excellent in and around cities. As for the price……what was the number of my Lotus Dealer again? Thanks again James
If anything, this reminds me in scope of the Can-Am Spyders that are sold in Canada - three wheeled trikes that have the handling aspects of a car more than a motorcycle, but applied in reverse.

I think the front 'set up' is hub centre steering. The Yamaha GTS1000 used it in 1993/4.
I think that is exactly what the first 24 hand built van den Brink carvers used
A Ford dealer near my house has a few as a courtesy vehicle. That is in the Netherlands. I also see the van version sometimes as well.
Brilliant, absolutely nuts, brilliant again, loads of fun .
I feel Jay comparing it to a city eco car is missing the point. At that price its a big boys toy. If I was to compile a fantasy 10-20 car garage this would be definitely on the list, maybe 2 so you could do trips in tandem with a mate. Looks amazing fun.
I compare it to those because that's what the company claimed it was
@@JayEmmOnCars When I spoke with the inventor last month the ICE is for travelling between cities where the EV is for in cities
🤣 Love this review! You had me in stiches for most of the content. Your reactions while driving were the BEST!
I can confirm the electric ones exist, having seen a couple while on holiday in Malta. They seemed to be used as rentals & food delivery cars mainly
The best review yet, I have wanted one of these for years. Fantastic machine
Like the Morgan 3 wheeler, it can't decide if its a car or a bike, but looks like it sure looks like fun to drive.
Unusual for sure, what a neat design. As a 4 year old remember seeing a 'bubble' car at the zebra crossing, back in 69/70, amazing we are heading back to smaller vehicles. Think you were wearing brown trousers.
Ive been called many things over the years, but never an unsung test pilot of the modern age 😂😂
I salute you, sirrah!
Love this video! Electric version exists!! I followed one out of B&Q Superstore Havent… two up with diy supplies!!
Getting old school Top Gear vibes off this one. In America we have something similar in the Polaris Slingshot which is just as ridiculous. Maybe more.
Yea That’s Dunsfold alright
How is a slingshot remotely close to this? That’s just a motorcycle for weenies
@@115jwalker that's a Can Am. The Polaris Slingshot is a 3 wheeler passenger car. Try googling a picture before looking like a fool.
@@bmstylee nope I know full well what it is, shares next to no similarities with what’s in this video save for the number of wheels. The slingshot and can am are both objectively for weenies
@@115jwalker found the little boy with the inferiority complex and small bits that he has to compensate for it. If you've ever driven either they can be quite fun. But you're to alpha to lower yourself to having fun. Goodbye.
Jay I normally come here for great commentary and cinematography, but tonight I an here for the understated comedy !!!😂😂😂😂😂
Not jealous at all. I will stick to car, or Norton Commando 750. I can smoke in the car and do shopping, also helpful not having to wear a lid. When massive traffic jams are liable and I am feeling brave I will take the bike. Don’t see the point of combining the disadvantages of both, with no advantages.
@The Central Scrutinizer Agree with most of what you say. I only use the bike occasionally, took it out this morning though, lovely day went over Snake Pass for lunch with husband to Yorkshire bridge Inn. Regarding protection, as a fellow biker, you will realise you can always jump off when some idiot pulls out. I have also found a can manoeuvre out of the way of danger. I see this as a coffin.
@@MadeleineTakam_Info_on_Profile you can jump off a bike while it is barreling down the road..?
@@herrowitsmeme6623 I once fell off my bike, as it was barrelling down the road. Luckily I just continued to barrel down the road into some bushes, got up had a cry, a nice gentleman put my bike in his transit gave me a cigarette and took me home to mum. It’s the stopping on hard objects that hurts you. Have jumped off my bike (Launched myself really) when someone just pulled out on me, after clearly seeing me. My bike destroyed the front of his car and I went over the bonnet. Unfortunately, he had no insurance, what a surprise!!!! He didn’t turn up for his Court Case either.
@The Central Scrutinizer it's better protected but I'm not sure how well it would fair in a collision even with a compact sedan let alone a full size sedan or something like a Range Rover and the like. Cars, SUVs and light duty trucks seem to be getting fatter and fatter for some reason.
@@MadeleineTakam_Info_on_Profile oh don't get me wrong. I understand that falling off and rolling is better. It just seems rather difficult to jump off a bike when its going that fast. Or I'm getting old haha
I remember watching the review of Carver One by St. Clarkson.
My immediate reaction was "What on Earth was that?!"
Also, I guess you should try Spyker C8 Laviolette and Donkervoort D8 next, just for that weird Dutch credential.
if you're adjusting in the corner, you either didn't enter it right or don't actually trust the carver what it's supposed to do.
I've driven this thing once. Its like sitting on the buddyseat of a motorbike. You have to let the car take the corner and you just follow it.
ah, the gigglecar. Everyone I know that has driven it started giggling. My neighbor had one. (he might still have it but is no longer my neighbor) and yes, I giggled as well.
At mid 600kg it’s still double the weight of my triumph thunderbird. So plenty of weight to push down on the wheel.
Well, that's certainly a different slant on transport for the brave at heart!
Love my Vigourous Move trike.
Carver Limited (mobility model) Cargo will be next.
The omly downside. Road side assistence doesn’t always have flatbeds for transporting a trike.
Thanks J, definitely a vehicle you'd never forget your go in! 🙏🙏
James you're probably going to say im bonkers but here me out. You're better than RUclips. You should be on the TV. Every Sunday evening. 8pm BBC 2. Theres no motoring programmes any more. Keep the format and give the petrol heads what they want. No silly challenges. No economy runs (Fith Gear). Just brilliant, honest reviews of a wide variety of cars everyone can relate to. Even Top Gear became a show about old bangers (in challenges) or £2 million hypercars. Your channel is a breath of fresh air. Sorry for waffling. I hope i see the day when at 8pm im excited to watch "Jayem on Cars"
Be honest there's a huge gap in the market. You're not doing whats been done a million times before. Your so different and you're bloody good at it.
Ha very kind Jimmy but I don't think they could afford me :)
there are actually a couple used electric ones for sale in the netherlands, sell for around 10k but only have 7ps though
@JayEmm you absolutely have to see if anyone in the UK has an Ecomobile you can try out. Didn’t know you are a biker, so surely this is the next logical step after the Carver?!
The EV version arein production and I do see them sometimes in NL, There are 45kmh versions for use without driverlicense and 85kmh that are a micro-car.
I was smiling uncontrollably throughout that intro 😅
I so want to drive one
Wow your near Dunsfold
When the Aptera hit the roads, I would love to see your review of driving it. Might need to come to the USA but the Aptera is a three-wheel reverse trike, which has more car like features, no tilting.
The van version for Pizza Hut? A dozen or so years ago, Domino's in Bath were running a Renault Twizzy. I had a chat with the driver when I saw it in Morrison's car park, and he reckoned that they only let the managers drive it, not the scooter boys. So it wasn't actually used for deliveries.
Yeah that sounds about right
Looks like fun! I am jealous.
DAF Dutch mainstream manufacturer. CVT trans too 😀
You’re right. I’m jealous.
It looks like a Lambretta got a 2CV in the family way. It looks like fantastic fun.
Hi Jay, I believe the EV version IS in production, it certainly looks a lot more sleek and developed and I would lurve to have one.
Probably the rarest car I've ever seen on the road
Wish I'd had one of these back in the day when I had to get a reliant robin. Granted I was coming off a 1000cc katana and wanted to get my car licence as soon as possible. So the idea was to spend a few months in the reliant and then find a friendly driving school man and pay for a couple of lessons just to make sure I didn't have any bad habits 😁 and then use the driving school car to take the test. Well it all worked out ok and I passed first time out in WoodGreen North London you know where all the big houses are, with the wide streets. It was easy. Sold the reliant and bought another bike😂
Jay’s giggling through the video… Obviously cos he was being subjected to the Carver-Tickle…
🤭😆
Oh dear. Brilliant.
That was one of the funniest informative videos I have seen 🤣
Well, the idea has certainly come a long way since the days of my J reg BSA Ariel 3 moped!
This made me smile (laugh out loud) as I do not normally feel "strange" watching a video........ Good on ya James.
I loved that car. Never seen anything like it
I love that there’s a cup holder.
Hi buddy, Dutch car manufacturer Daf or daffodil sold out to Volvo in the late seventies the Volvo 340 was originally a daf design.
"He ish my hushband and alsho my lover!"
@@GT380man I say we live and let live.
Awesome thing I would be scared of wacking rear wheel on kerb
I would love to own one of those!
Excellent James, keep up the quirky stuff! Then again I could listen to your opinion of an electric kettle so carry on.
Didn't know you ride motorbikes! Any videos? Would love a video or two for somebody getting into bikes or back into them. I rode a bit as a teen and thinking about getting back into it and now 20yrs later not sure where to begin 😆

At EPCOT center there used to be a thing which looks exactly like this, it was called... the 'lean machine'.
Wow. A daily driver and amusement park ride in one vehicle. Very slick.
This morning, I got recommended a clip from Top Gear where Richard Hammond sort of reviewed this thing. Can't wait to see a proper, full review now :D
Good review. Loads of info without being at all dull.
Being able to manually control the tilt would be helpful, as would a more powerful engine and a decent gearbox.
Would 400BHP do? ruclips.net/video/qBoRB8asNIw/видео.html actually too much and for €60k could be yours!
That looks like so much fun 😂
What an interesting and unique vehicle. I think I would get sea sick (car sick) driving this thing but it would be excellent in and around cities. As for the price……what was the number of my Lotus Dealer again? Thanks again James
A lot of people think they would get sick but quite the opposite, no one has been sick in mine yet and I have taken 100s of people for rides
If anything, this reminds me in scope of the Can-Am Spyders that are sold in Canada - three wheeled trikes that have the handling aspects of a car more than a motorcycle, but applied in reverse.
All these years later and its still supercool.
Honda also make the 3-wheel delivery bikes in Japan, with the same tilting body, but the cargo pod stays upright..
Just awesome, I remember Rich Hammond on top gear testing one!
