  • Cal Freshman Mykolas Alekna has taken the track world by storm obliterating long-standing records in only his first year of college.
    The crazy thing? He still doesn't have the family record...

    Coming back here once Mykolas broke world record (74.08) with 74.35 throw which stood for 38 years at the age of 21. Fun fact I used to throw discus and even got a pair of Virgilius throwing shoes once as I couldn't find ones my size (49 EU) at the time so he have me a brand new pair he had. What a speacial man he is.

    The funny thing is that I set the Cal freshman record in the late 60's with a throw of 175'11". That is absolutely hilarious when compared to Miklos' throws of 69 meters. He's truly a phenomenon is a sport that is typically dominated by men in their mid to late twenties. Looking forward to seeing his progression over the next few years. Go Bears!

      @@BeauThrows It was pretty good for 1968. I threw 184' that summer in an all comers meet in San Mateo. I even beat John Powell as I recall in that all-comers meet but I ended up transferring back east to college and didn't pursue it too seriously after that. John P. went on to great heights as you know. Alenka's throw for a 19 year old is truly remarkable. I look forward to following his career.

      @@sandyjr5225 Not into giving my name out on the internet. But you can find my name in the Daily Californian (archives) on the sports page in the April issue of 1968 in the article entitled, "Frosh Phenom Sets New Discus Record", (not that I was mind you, lol!) the article features me and Clarence Johnson the Cal high jumper who set the Cal record that year with a jump of around 7'4". As for John Powell he was either a sophomore or junior at San Jose State and his throwing partner at SJS was Fred Hayden. When I first saw John he was only throwing in the 170's. Then in '68, both John and Fred had a breakout year that with John throwing into the high 190's or low 200's...after that he exploded onto the international stage. Fred not so much. I on the other hand didn't progress much beyond the mid 180's as I got involved with rugby and academics.

      He might but not likely, history has many stories of U20’s performing to incredible levels only to not go on as a senior. Jacko Gill is a good example, whilst a very good senior thrower and 2 x Olympian everyone thought he would break the world shot record based on his U20 performances…..it didn’t translate once he became a senior.

    • @CC-xt1bw
      @CC-xt1bw 2 года назад +1

      @@anguscooper1295 I agree Angus. There are many examples of youngsters that throw well early in their careers but don't progress as predicted as they get older. It's only the very select few that continue to progress to an elite world record level of performance. I know from my own experience (58.6m w the 2kg discus at 18 y/o,) but didn't advance much beyond that for various reasons. For every thrower that achieves the elite level of throwing there are 25-50 throwers that achieve some success early but never achieve that elite status. That's the nature sport and competition.

He and the 25 year old CEH are both destined to go back and forth breaking the record over and over the next few years. I feel like Ceh is is 6'9 is very close as well. But that Alekna at only 6'4 and not nearly his dad's size broke the record is amazing. He has a long career ahead of him.

      When I was competing in high school, the national record and California state record was 194' set by Bob Stoeker of Palo Alto, Ca. in about 1964. Bob went on to Stanford. I threw 184' as a high school junior but was ineligible my senior year because I competed as a freshman in private school and students were only allowed three years of competition (New Jersey). As I recall there were roughly 5-7 high school throwers nationwide in the 180's that year (1966) according to Track and Field News. Over the past 25 years, the high school discus records have exploded; culminating in Ryan Crouser's toss of 237' (!) seven or eight years ago. That said, Miklas Alenka is in a different league from any 19 year old that has preceeded him. He recently threw 225' in the Lithuanian Championships which is phenomenal for any age, let alone 19 (now 20). His dad didn't throw 73 m until he was 29, so if that's any indication, we'll see a lot more from young Alenka.
