The reason isabelle's scene actually works is because she can be conceived as an actual character, instead of just a name and a picture, due to having dialogue which only one other victim really gets, being tina. also the sheer number of people dying creates an improbable scenario (like jigsaw) where everyone who dies after the midway point looks stupid for not moving the hell away. of course not to mention the extreme misuse of subject matter and the random ableism urbanspook let slip lmao

He said on his old twitter it was going to be 10 episodes but after getting criticism from the internet he decided to just delete his twitter and quit instead of improve. Later he came back to twitter with a new account but still. And this guy says criticism/insults don't affect him

To me, horror can be seperated into two inate fears - fear of the known and fear of the unknown. Fear of the unknown being the anxiety and terror felt about not knowing the full story or being unsure of reality, not being able to fully understand what's around you. Fear of the known is the terror felt when knowing too much, having a full understanding of the horror makes you wish you had blissful ignorance. I think this series appeals to neither of these, the most notorious slasher films understood the value of subtly and knowing how much to tell the audience and when to keep them on their toes. The Painter seems to want to be in your face, not really giving you chance to be nervous or curious, the most mystery it has is who the painters are but its not like they have much character.
This is why things like Mandela Catalogue's Alternates work so well. It never gives you a full understanding of the alternates and they're that much more terrifying because of it. It doesn't help that they can mimic people too.

I think the painter could be easily fixed by having the investigator narrate it. Let a person EXPLAIN what they know about the case. Especially considering several of the victims were cops you could work on an emotional level, let them be colleagues to the narrator, or a mentor figure

Trying to use a pg13 explication I heard of an idea for an analog horror like this Have there be one killer at the beginning Shortly into the series reveal there is another killer The first killer just kills because they find it fun, the second one like to SA and kill and the first killer gets fed up when the second one does it to a younger individual Eventually their partnership unravels leading to their capture
The worst part about Corey's death is that it could have been really interesting, but it comes across as little more than shock for the sake of shock. Sexual violence is a very powerful subject in horror, especially when it involves children. But it's quite difficult to utilize without coming across as crass. Just an idea I made haphazardly: what if Corey's death wasn't even listed as a killing until they find the painting. The death is listed as a freak accident of a kid playing in the woods. Then, months later in the story, they find a painting labeled as Corey's at another crime scene. The audience is not treated to the painting, at least not at first, but we get an audio section of a police officer who wants Corey's family to know and another who is adamant that they never even learn of the painting's existence. Neither of them discuss what the contents of the image even are. It would create such a sense of terror: "What the hell is the painting?" "The Painter's killings are often gorey, why wasn't Corey's? What satiated that desire with Corey?" Maybe we don't even get to see the painting until several episodes later, if ever. Perhaps if the two officers/detectives were recurring characters it could even provide for some characterization. There would have been something to speculate rather than just edge for the sake of edge.
My idea of a main character of this series is a police sketch artist who has a grudge or any sort of strong motivation on stopping the painter. A story of artist versus artist.
Urban spook's story could've been good. The first time I watched it, it scared me and my mind literally blocked it off, especially how the painting looked. But now, it's just boring and there's nothing to it. It really seems like he doesn't know what he's doing 😭

"The Painter" can be an interesting analogue horror. but there are barely any stories in the series. I don't mind the messed up painting or the story. But among the 8 videos so far, only 3 videos are informative about the story so far. unlike the other analogue horrors series like Mandela Catalogue, Greylock, Vita Carnis, etc, they have different story for every different and upcoming videos to tells a story about the world they lived in. The Painter on the other hand, hardly tells a story other than showing a bunch of barely informative paintings of the murderers. I was kinda disappointed that i was very excited about the series being new, but the story really stuck on the same pace and timeline. every new video uploaded only shows the same thing like the previous one.
My personal opinion on _The Painter_ is a little bit different than some of the most common criticisms I see being thrown around, though I do agree with a lot of them. I think that while the series is definitely controversial in its subject matter and presentation, this alone isn't what makes it bad. Horror is a genre which from its very inception was meant to be subversive, to be controversial and go against the norms of the time pieces in the genre were written. It's only recently in the last few years that a 'safer' brand of horror has emerged that seems to try to avoid pushing boundaries. My biggest complaints with this series is not its subject, but rather *its writing.* Visually, it's very eyecatching, and I think that UrbanSpook definitely has talent as an artist (more on that in a sec, it becomes relevant again in a moment), but from a writing standpoint, it's very wonky. With the exception of the newer episodes, you don't really get much time to familiarise yourself with the victims before they get killed off, and yet the series makes it clear that you're meant to be upset by their loss. While the descriptions of their deaths are suitably disgusting, there isn't that emotional pathos to make you feel bad for what you see. You get the visceral reaction, but very little psychological effect other than the revulsion towards the gross details. There's also the fact that the series can't seem to decide whether the tapes are confidential evidence files, or public service announcements. If they're the former, why would the police feel the need to end them with calls for the public to give information if the tapes are for the legal system's eyes only? If they're the latter, then why would they divulge so much information into the case that the killers would be able to use? For my final point - and this one _is_ levelled at the art itself - I feel like quite a bit of immersion is lost when the series claims it has photographs and video footage of the killers in action, but the visuals are represented by UrbanSpook's paintings - recognising it as hand-drawn artwork takes a bit of the suspension of disbelief away, when this could have been preserved if he instead represented the killers through a new medium, such as practical effects in full motion footage, or even edited photographs. TL;DR - Interesting premise that actually could do quite well, but its poor writing is what lets it down.
Yes! The killers and some victim photos being paintings as well took me entirely out of a series I was already struggling to take seriously. When they're animated in Meat I actually cackled out loud.

I always feel disappointed with how this series has gone. Like the creator being... The way he his aside, I thought it was cool art and I LOVED the music, because I am nothing if not a sucker for some industrial drone, but it's truly disappointing how the story is mostly just shock for shock's sake and aimless meandering. I understand wanting to use a series as a vehicle for your art and music but this is such a bad execution of that. Also one thing that drove me NUTS is that the phone number is like held up like this big important thing, it's completely visible, it's in nearly every video, you seem to be prompted to contact it in some manner, but there's NOTHING connected to the number at all , it's a dead end. I feel like phone numbers are something where you have to commit and have something at the other end of the line, or you don't include it at all or at least censor it so we know there isn't something we CAN call. Also hjdhfjdfh The little Petscop bit absolutely activated something in my brain, now I need to go rewatch that even though IJUST rewatched it a few months ago
What I’d give for the premise of The Painter to be redone sigh sigh The 911 call feels so real, it left me unable to sleep the first time I listened to it. I wish the rest of the series had the same effect. Unfortunately, it doesn’t- the story (especially the timeline) feels so hard to understand. It’s incredibly disheartening, and I hope The Painter someday gets a rewrite/redo.. with a proper timeline.
Okay but the music this video opened with is the same music as a video I had in my watch later right before this so i somehow almost seamlessly went from a short clip about luigi to someone talking about analog horror in such quick seamless fashion that i almost didn’t realize it was a different video at first

The difference between this thing and a slasher film is that slashers operate using setup and payoff. A setup is introduced, tension and anticipation grows, and we get a crazy kill as a punchline. This series is essentially all “punchline”, which just sounds stupid without it’s necessary context. Like, imagine Saw movies without watching the traps play out, just the aftermath. Kinda just gross and boring.
I think UrbanSPOOK should've looked for someone he knows who is a good writer and someone else who could've helped with the presentation of the product(so it isn't just text on a screen lol).

Awhile ago, Mister Manticore almost did something new which hinted at something dark with cryptic phrases about things like "false hope" with season 3 somehow about to be reversed until Mister Manticore cancelled that idea and went on a little hiatus before coming back recently. That's why you can't find season 3 or Modern Day on the channel. Someone has been archiving and reuploading all his content and Mister Manticore even shouted her out so at least he's okay with someone else reuploading his old content.

the funniest thing about urbanspook's author is not even his second channel with questionable animations with kids, its that he makes a big thing on xitter about all the haters being ohhh so soft and not being able to handle hard creepee stuff yet literally the only horror the series can offer is just pressuring on the viewers feel of compassion through "the victims were killed brutally, dismembered, graped, and had 432000 stab wounds on each limb, you WILL feel unnerved and whatever", that especially shows in i dont remember what episode but where there was a text saying "she was only 6 months old" while describing the one of the child victims
some of the pictures are kinda spooky and then you get the man in the pipes. I'm gonna be honest at some points I wasn't the least bit terrified or unnerved I just kinda giggled to myself.
Ive seen a number of videos on The Painter and what would make the story cool/interesting is if the art was found or given to a gallery and the gallery owner slowly put together each painting correlated with a murder slowly unintentionally tracking down said criminal until its either too late or actually stopping them somehow.

The "2 hours before I recorded this video, I had to take a shit" bit put the biggest smile on my face. Quality of the vid doesn't nearly match the sub count. Loved this video!
"The Painter" can be an interesting analogue horror. but there are barely any stories in the series. I don't mind the messed up painting or the story. But among the 8 videos so far, only 3 videos are informative about the story so far. unlike the other analogue horrors series like Mandela Catalogue, Greylock, Vita Carnis, etc, they have different story for every different and upcoming videos to tells a story about the world they lived in.
The Painter on the other hand, hardly tells a story other than showing a bunch of barely informative paintings of the murderers. I was kinda disappointed that i was very excited about the series being new, but the story really stuck on the same pace and timeline. every new video uploaded only shows the same thing like the previous one.

My personal opinion on _The Painter_ is a little bit different than some of the most common criticisms I see being thrown around, though I do agree with a lot of them. I think that while the series is definitely controversial in its subject matter and presentation, this alone isn't what makes it bad. Horror is a genre which from its very inception was meant to be subversive, to be controversial and go against the norms of the time pieces in the genre were written. It's only recently in the last few years that a 'safer' brand of horror has emerged that seems to try to avoid pushing boundaries. My biggest complaints with this series is not its subject, but rather *its writing.*
Visually, it's very eyecatching, and I think that UrbanSpook definitely has talent as an artist (more on that in a sec, it becomes relevant again in a moment), but from a writing standpoint, it's very wonky. With the exception of the newer episodes, you don't really get much time to familiarise yourself with the victims before they get killed off, and yet the series makes it clear that you're meant to be upset by their loss. While the descriptions of their deaths are suitably disgusting, there isn't that emotional pathos to make you feel bad for what you see. You get the visceral reaction, but very little psychological effect other than the revulsion towards the gross details. There's also the fact that the series can't seem to decide whether the tapes are confidential evidence files, or public service announcements. If they're the former, why would the police feel the need to end them with calls for the public to give information if the tapes are for the legal system's eyes only? If they're the latter, then why would they divulge so much information into the case that the killers would be able to use?
For my final point - and this one _is_ levelled at the art itself - I feel like quite a bit of immersion is lost when the series claims it has photographs and video footage of the killers in action, but the visuals are represented by UrbanSpook's paintings - recognising it as hand-drawn artwork takes a bit of the suspension of disbelief away, when this could have been preserved if he instead represented the killers through a new medium, such as practical effects in full motion footage, or even edited photographs.
TL;DR - Interesting premise that actually could do quite well, but its poor writing is what lets it down.
Yes! The killers and some victim photos being paintings as well took me entirely out of a series I was already struggling to take seriously. When they're animated in Meat I actually cackled out loud.

I always feel disappointed with how this series has gone. Like the creator being... The way he his aside, I thought it was cool art and I LOVED the music, because I am nothing if not a sucker for some industrial drone, but it's truly disappointing how the story is mostly just shock for shock's sake and aimless meandering. I understand wanting to use a series as a vehicle for your art and music but this is such a bad execution of that.
Also one thing that drove me NUTS is that the phone number is like held up like this big important thing, it's completely visible, it's in nearly every video, you seem to be prompted to contact it in some manner, but there's NOTHING connected to the number at all , it's a dead end. I feel like phone numbers are something where you have to commit and have something at the other end of the line, or you don't include it at all or at least censor it so we know there isn't something we CAN call.
Also hjdhfjdfh The little Petscop bit absolutely activated something in my brain, now I need to go rewatch that even though IJUST rewatched it a few months ago

The 911 call feels so real, it left me unable to sleep the first time I listened to it. I wish the rest of the series had the same effect. Unfortunately, it doesn’t- the story (especially the timeline) feels so hard to understand. It’s incredibly disheartening, and I hope The Painter someday gets a rewrite/redo.. with a proper timeline.

The difference between this thing and a slasher film is that slashers operate using setup and payoff. A setup is introduced, tension and anticipation grows, and we get a crazy kill as a punchline. This series is essentially all “punchline”, which just sounds stupid without it’s necessary context. Like, imagine Saw movies without watching the traps play out, just the aftermath. Kinda just gross and boring.
I think UrbanSPOOK should've looked for someone he knows who is a good writer and someone else who could've helped with the presentation of the product(so it isn't just text on a screen lol).

There was Modern Day which was originally season 4 before it became an AU spinoff like The Nixonverse. Awhile ago, Mister Manticore almost did something new which hinted at something dark with cryptic phrases about things like "false hope" with season 3 somehow about to be reversed until Mister Manticore cancelled that idea and went on a little hiatus before coming back recently. That's why you can't find season 3 or Modern Day on the channel. Someone has been archiving and reuploading all his content and Mister Manticore even shouted her out so at least he's okay with someone else reuploading his old content.

the funniest thing about urbanspook's author is not even his second channel with questionable animations with kids, its that he makes a big thing on xitter about all the haters being ohhh so soft and not being able to handle hard creepee stuff yet literally the only horror the series can offer is just pressuring on the viewers feel of compassion through "the victims were killed brutally, dismembered, graped, and had 432000 stab wounds on each limb, you WILL feel unnerved and whatever", that especially shows in i dont remember what episode but where there was a text saying "she was only 6 months old" while describing the one of the child victims

some of the pictures are kinda spooky and then you get the man in the pipes. I'm gonna be honest at some points I wasn't the least bit terrified or unnerved I just kinda giggled to myself.
Ive seen a number of videos on The Painter and what would make the story cool/interesting is if the art was found or given to a gallery and the gallery owner slowly put together each painting correlated with a murder slowly unintentionally tracking down said criminal until its either too late or actually stopping them somehow.
