    As a person who started with FFT back when it first came out. That was my first introduction to this type of game, and I played through it more times than I can remember. I absolutely love it. I can unequivocally say Tactics Ogre is a better game in every possible way. That's just my opinion. So stating that it's basically over-hyped by its old fan base is woefully incorrect.
    Once you realize it's not always about "overpowering" your foes, but to actually use _"Tactics"_ (something that FFT sorely lacks). I think you may change your mind about a great many takes you had on this game. There are a lot of ways to synergize in this game to do some wild stuff. Also, just because a weapon or armor has a higher damage or defense number, doesn't necessarily make it better for every unit.
    I hope you stick with it to discover why people feel this is the best SJRPG ever made. Also look at some veterans content of this game, you will learn a lot. Coffee Potato is my go to for mechanics, Warren Report for lore.

      One thing to note is that Reborn is worse than the psp version though (though it IS prettier, sprites excluded, and with better musics most of the time).

      @@armorvil Nah, I feel it's better. Much more streamlines, a lot of needless things removed or merged. I feel it's much better. To each their own though.

      @TirpitzLuminare Like you said, FFT is about breaking the game which is why I will likely enjoy it more than I ever will TO: Reborn. I understand that the "tactics" isn't the same between the two games, at least in this version since the level cap is new. I would play FFT for one reason and TO:R for another. Saying that it's the best SJRPG ever made definitely sounds like overhype to me lol. But yeah, I don't see it. I've had more fun playing old school FE, Advanced Wars, or Fell Seal. That's not to be confused with me just wanting more of those games (though that would be cool) or saying that TO:R is trash because I actually said it was good in the review. It's just that I know what I like, and TO:R didn't check all the same boxes.
      What's your favorite build?

      @@JRPGFanatic Not every game is for everyone. That being said, more often than not when people put the time into Tactics Ogre they come away with the feeling it's the best TJRPG. Remember everything is subjective. My opinion, your review, the person who said the PSP version is better. We're all entitled to our opinion. I just wanted to make the point that stating it was over hyped by it's original fan base isn't a fair assessment. This is coming from a person who felt FFT was the best TJRPG, until I played Tactics Ogre. TO is widely considered the best game in the genre, right, wrong or indifferent -- it's just what the consensus is.
      You can absolutely face roll in this game if you want to. There are many ways to do it, but it takes more investment than in FFT. The game wants you to use the tools to synergize units. Do you have to? Nope, and that's what is great about TO.
      If you have more fun in other games, then that's great, play what you like. However you need to really dig into TO to see everything it has. It's exceptionally deep. The story is flipping amazing, the build diversity is off the scale, the content is vast... I could go on, but I think you get my point.
      Favorite build? Seriously dude there's too many to decide on just one.

    Character customization has a lot more to it than FFT - a variety of builds are actually viable in any given situation, you don’t just get to overwhelm the game with a tier 0 set up you have to adapt to each map and utilize a variety of strategies. I think by cutting a lot of the fat and useless stuff (stat buffing skills for example , worthless meme combat techniques) the game feels more interactive to me. I far preferred this to FFT

      @@JRPGFanatic Oh I'm aware, I'm just saying that if there's any patches or free DLC for the game if it's worth going back and seeing if any of the criticism have been addressed. As you really don't ever see people doing that and yes I'm aware it's really not that possible but it's worth providing the thought for the back of the head if you get what I mean.
      Also a few of the people that have basically looked deep in to what's possible with the game are at least speculating multiplayer might be a thing that might get added later on since some of the things that would only be really relevant for it are still in the game. So that ether be cut content or possible DLC. But at minimum I'm glad you enjoyed the game.

    In the original TO you couldn't purchase marks for change classes, you had to meet certain stat requirements to be able to get them. For the terror knight for example, before you can only change into terror knight if you went to chaos route and you had to meet certain Stat requirements for him as well as having at least 20 kills . This was a revamped new system I had to get used to as well. Still good nonetheless

    • @JRPGFanatic
      @JRPGFanatic  Год назад +1

      This actually sounds like a very interesting system. I could see myself liking it a lot because I would have to focus on how I was growing my team. I like to have diversity so I can see myself recruiting a bunch of people so I can make them different classes and have some fun leveling them the way I want. On the other hand I could also see it being really annoying since some of the requirements are probably real annoying to satisfy and I'm not sure about how changing classes would work.

    • @jonathanlim203
      @jonathanlim203 Год назад +1

      Yup, it focused how you chose your classes and when to change them depending on what stats you were focused on growing. Like concentrate on agility first in the beginning of thw game then if you were satisfied by how quick ur turn was going you can then change to berserk or terror knight for a little bit to increase your strength a good portion of the time, then switch back to ninja towards the end. Stuff like that. I think you would have enjoyed the TO classic so much better than reborn, considering it would've reminisced very much more similarly to FFT since FFT used a lot of the system used fro the TO classic. Classic also never had group lvling, only gaining exp/lvling in game or during training so grinding was an actual thing like FFT. You couldve been max lvl beginning of the game after getting donalto if u wanted to by AI training. Game was actually difficult bcuz of permadeaths( no 3 turn down till dead) and the AI characters you had to save were near impossible bcuz they were dummies and were on a suicide mission while the enemies always hit like a tank lol. Just my small little gripes I liked from the classic better, but to each its own. I still like this game alot lol.

    It's nice to see a review of this game that is willing to point out its flaws and not just endlessly praise it.
    I'm new to this game as well and while I'm definitely enjoying it, it is not perfect and is missing some features that are staples of these type of games. Like being able to compare equipment in the store with equipped items on characters. Or seeing the abilities of a new class like you mentioned.

    • @armorvil
      @armorvil Год назад +2

      Yeah, or just being more of an RPG like the psp version was. It had skill "trees" a la FFT (and some abilities were shared between jobs), random battles, no level caps, no buff cards that make or break your game... This "Reborn" version leans too much towards Advance Wars for my taste. The PSP game was a lot more like FFT, you could feel more of a connexion with your characters and saw them grow as you taught them the skills you wanted, etc. (I can't talk about the SNES/PS1 version, the fact that half your army was perma-killed in the first battle if you didn't train an hour or two by making your guys hit each other over and over instantly turned me off, lol). Anyways it's Square once again being disconnected with what made them popular to begin with, by trying to fix what wasn't broken. Nothing new under the sun, sadly.

    I disagree with most of your takes, also the customization in this game was heavily streamlined in comparison to previous iterations of it that's why you have heard fans praising it so much over the years, that said as in FFT that line of customization always ended in a character using the META build and never looking back again, Reborn tried solving this forcing you to adapt to what's in front of you, you know the literal meaning of tactics.
    Also regarding dificulty I could argue a lot on how FFT is a streamlined version of the first Tactics Ogre from 95' which really was hell but at this point doesn't serve any purpose other than making me some sort of a game snob.
    Also dude, Valeria is just a tiny island archipelago of a big world shared by other places in the other ogre battle series, if you feel inclined there's a youtube channel called Warren Report that recounts what happense through every other entry

      In terms of builds, I didn't really have to do much adapting to get through it. I stuck with mostly the same skills (meditation, engulf, weapon mastery to name a few off the top of my head) and swapped in recruitment/banes whenever I needed them. I actually liked how broken FFT was and like Disgaea, that's one of the reasons I keep replaying it.
      What's your favorite build?

      @@JRPGFanatic Right now I like my two Hawkmen Runefencers, they are my assault squad with Canopus to any spot on the map, specially absurdly elevated places like the fight on Barnicia against Lans, equipped with Scorpions and Instill fire they usually Poison anyone they hit, Sparksphere III when a target has to much phys. defense or out of reach, Heal for support behind enemy lines, Boon of Swiftness or Ease depending on the fight, meditate so they're 90% of the time able to use finishers, and Conserve MP for free casts, they can do anything and while they're numbers don't excel they are decent.
      So when enemy has terrain advantage Acatrius, Trilpheus and Canopus are there to turn the scales back.
      Anyways most of customization in this version of the game comes from the party setup rather than individual units, although classes have a basic degree of customization at their disposal as you've pointed out.
      Late game with gear acquired through Palace of the Dead and San Bronsa you're able to do more stuff.
      Edit: Typo

    • @JRPGFanatic
      @JRPGFanatic  Год назад +1

      @@VF19SExcalibur Yeah, your comment just made me realize that I was focusing on the wrong thing (individuality vs group). I remember thinking early on how some skills could synergize well with the group then kind of forgot about it and started focusing on making characters strong individually. On that note, I feel like any class that can use spells is much better than any that can't because they can also ignore elevation, can attack pretty much from anywhere, and have AoEs for higher damage output.
      I'm still at the intro of PoTD so I haven't found any cursed weapons or much relics so my experience was mainly about how it felt playing up to post game. It definitely seems like I would enjoy the post game more and min-maxing the end-game loot.
