  • Stephen Gordon Hendry MBE is a Scottish professional snooker player and a commentator for the BBC and ITV. As a seven-time World Champion, he is one of the most successful players in the modern era of the World Snooker Championship and holds the record for the most seasons as world number one (nine seasons). To this day I still don't think a presence at a snooker table compares to that of Stephen Hendrys. Not Ronnie, not Higgins, not selby maybe davis in the 80s is the closest. I'm just talking about sheer presence. Was always in awe of this man.

La grandeza de Hendry no es jugar bien a snooker, ni meter bolas o hacer un 147.

Por eso es el más grande.

Something that is always overlooked by these videos is the fact that Stephen changed the way players played the blue into a side pocket and used the white to break up the pack. The amount of frames he won because of his blue in side pocket and the cue ball connecting with the pack was a game changer. He controlled the white so the shot was never a hit and hope. The best there has ever been.

How many WC’s did Ronnie win in the 90’s when Hendry was at his peak? (He had 8 years)None!! Yeah he fell off but no one to touch him in the 90’s. Overall Hendry was much more dominant than Ronnie. Highest win rate at the crucible, only player to get the triple crown in 2 different years. 9 seasons at no.1 and 16 years in the top 16. Youngest W.Champion, 5 WC’s in a row. Ronnie only has 2 WC’s back to back. Most ranking titles in one season at the time. @@wayneanthonyholmes4764 By ANY standard that is the "Best Ever" in any sport, Hendry did something no one else will ever do. Not even Ronnie. Five world titles in five consecutive years! As much as I love to watch Ronnie play, Hendry has nothing to prove beyond being the "King of the Crucible!" The only club Ronnie has left in his bag to out-do Hendry to be the "best ever" is to attain eight World Titles. You're "Haha" is insulting and juvenile. Don't forget that Ronnie competed during the same era and fell well short of Hendry's accomplishment. When Ronnie bragged he was going to "send Hendry home" before one of their matches, who was it that sat in his chair while Hendry scored century after century to win that charity match? It's okay to appreciate Ronnie and his longevity, I do! He will always be one of the most talented snooker players ever but he hasn't made any shots that Hendry didn't and lets not forget that in over two decades of consistent play, Ronnie still hasn't even gotten the seventh World Title yet. Generally I let people think what they want without comment but your immature and incorrect evaluation of the events needed a little tweaking. Let's share a post when Ronnie wins his eighth title and I'll agree with you then.

In my honest opinion Stephen Hendy is the epitome of snooker, not by titles n such, but by sheer determination & skill to be the best. Steve Davies the robot is a close second. The legend Alex Higgins revived the game from boring to thrilling with his sublime shots, (named my son Alex James after him n Jimmy). Jimmy white gave us as much as Alex for sheer talent. Then came Ronnie O' Sullivan who could possibly change history by winning more titles than Hendry, but I see a dark horse in the background in the name of Judd Trump!. All fantastic players in their own right...but aside from alcohol/drugs /mental health issues etc, I would say Hendry up to now is/ was the most focused snooker player ever.

(8 ranking events) tournaments Stephen Hendry won 10 titles came runner up in three others and won two of the triple crown titles! (Same year made 43 centuries)
Top four players for century breaks in 1990-91
    Stephen Hendry 43
    Jimmy White 23
    John Parrott 19
    Thailand James Wattana 17
Comparison to the 2018-19 season with 54 tournaments 20 being ranking events?
2018-19 season professional snooker tournaments (54)
    2018-19 ranking events (20)
Neil Robinson 84 centuries in 2018-19 season
Judd Trump 83 centuries in 2018-19 season
    Ronnie O'sullivan 61 centuries in 2018-19 season
So just by comparing 2018-19 season to Stephen Hendry 1990-91 season and suggesting that double the tournaments would certainly mean at least Stephen doubling his results which means probably winning 20 titles in 2018-19 season and come runner up six times and have 86 centuries beating the top century maker by two frames, Neil Robinson?
That's how dominant Stephen Hendry was in his day! (Hard to comprehend? )

I think Ronnie stands a great chance of winning 8 world titles, and I think he'll do it, I hope so. A higher win rate of nearly 75% to Stephen's 68%, again in a superior time with a higher standard of opposition. Feel free to check the stats. More centuries. More triples, over a similar time span regardless of what the guy above says. That is just a stat to help back up his bias. If the question was was Hendry the dominant player in the 90s and king of the crucible. The answer is invariably, yes! But Ronnie is the best by a country mile. Stats say it, my eyes say it, almost every pro says it. Hell, even Hendry says it! The fastest 147 and able to be totally ambidextous are a few other feathers in the cap that Hendry just didn't have. Hendry even said that Yan Bintao was better than him and that he was just a one trick pony. Neat trick, dont get me wrong. By the time Trump, Selby and Robertson are done Hendry will be lucky to crack top 5. At this time I think Higgins has surpassed Hendry too. I love Hendry! Total legend. But don't romanticize the past. I'm not sure we will ever have another Rocket and we are blessed to see him still able to give us magic even if it is not quite with the same frequency as 10 years ago. If you analyse his stats from WC 2004 2008 2012 and the masters where he destroyed Higgins it is unsurpassed, even by Trump in 2019. Like I said facts dont care about your feelings or the nostalgia you have for an individual. I'm a semi decent amateur and even if ronnie had never won a single tournament he would still be the best just from what my eyes see when he is 'on it' there is nothing like it. Not even close. A collection of the best 147s taking into account situation in the match, the match they’re playing and the quality of the break. Two I can think of are Higgins’ break against Trump in the 2012 Shanghai Masters final and O’ Sullivan’s against Ding in the 2014 Welsh Open

The question I ask is, how or why did the standard change. Hendry was the best, what happened to lower his usual high standards. I would have thought ,snooker is a game that is ageless, the only factor is distraction. The only distraction I can think of is marriage and having a family. Realising that family is more important than snooker. I would say it,naturally , happens to all successful sportspeople.
