    Congratulations. The second I heard you play a bass note I knew you got an incredible Steinway D. You are so lucky to have access to a piano like this. Best of luck to you with the recording studio.

      ThePianoforever I commented on your last video that you made about Steinway's teflon actions. I posted a link to a video I made of the 1925 Steinway M at my church. I would say it is the best small Steinway I have ever played. I have the pleasure of playing it every week for the church service. It has great sustain and a powerful upper register. Please excuse my mistakes in playing. I think you may enjoy hearing it.

      I find it fascinating that others have been interested in my long search for a special concert grand. I am in the process now of trying to secure a concert marimba for the studio that I hope is almost complete.

    Well well well! Congratulations James on a truly great piano and a truly great find! I've been away for a few weeks and it's a pleasure to find this pleasant surprise development on my return. With an instrument of this calibre to begin with, you can virtually get the sound and touch that you find ideal for your playing and studio. Great stuff. Many congrats! And many happy hours of playing, practicing and recording!!

      You are very kind!
      Now that I have this part of the studio arranged I hope to spend more time on other projects until I get the studio up and running next summer. In the next few days I plan to start a new series about maintaining grand pianos, and make it so everyone is capable of doing most of their own service work on their pianos. The one thing I find is that most pianos need basic work that is not being done because of the cost of doing that type of work. In this next series I will show how it is possible to do a lot of this work yourself.

    Hi James,
    Congratulations! I have loved every video of your journey to find the perfect piano for you. I think you have proved that there are still a few world class piano brands of excellent quality, design, and tone being made today. But ultimately, it is the individual piano, regardless of brand, that sometimes just turns out extra special. When you hear it, you know it! A powerful rich bass, a smooth transition all the way up the keyboard, a sparkling treble with incredible sustain, and a super responsive action that does everything you ask of it. It is hard to find it all in one instrument, but when you do, it is an incredible experience. For me, it turned out to be a Baldwin SD-10 from 1978 with new custom made Ronsen hammers. I am so excited for you. Everyday when I see and play and hear my piano, I still cannot believe how blessed I am to have it, and that my dream piano became a reality. I know you will feel the same way.

    • @ThePianoforever
      @ThePianoforever  7 лет назад

      Dwayne,
      I honestly was considering a SD-10 during this process. It would have been a great choice for sure. The build date of your piano definitely places it in the golden years for Baldwin. You likely know that my practice piano for the last 5 1/2 years has been a 1977 Baldwin SF-10, and I love it so, but the hammers are now very hard and needed replacing so for now it is in retirement and will be placed in our house. The main studio piano will of course be the Steinway D, but the practice piano will be the Schiedmayer to keep the hours off the Steinway D. I have lots of plans so stay tuned for some really cool stuff coming up.

    • @ThePianoforever
      @ThePianoforever  7 лет назад

      It is rather a short video of my performance, but I have been working on getting the piano in top form before uploading a full version. It's really good now, but I think it can even be a tiny bit better. I have not even had time to look for the sweet spot for recording yet. The only recording I did was from the rim, and honestly I thought it was excellent, but it might be nice to try a few things.

      I'm the one that asked you a few questions regarding the Baldwin Concert Vertical. I haven't gotten to play it yet, because it was used last week in our state's high school music competitions. It's back in the store and will play it this week. They also have a Young Chang that may be promising. I have also played a Ritmuller and Hailun...very nice...and, did not really care for the used Yamaha U1, U3, and B series. I still need to try the Ritmuller 132. This WILL be a process...just as it was for you.

    Congratulations on your Steinway!
    I also want to buy NY steinway.
    I now use a Pramberger piano. Someday i will buy.
    Your curiosity of pianos makes me happy. When i was young i liked bright sound pianos like Yamaha but now i like sound like steineway.
    But many years later people could think real piano sound is yamaha sound. Because yamaha has perfect quality control. Your video attribute to people to think what is real pianos. Thank you so much.
    I am not good at English. I am Korean.

      Music is a journey that one never finishes. When I was eight I wanted a New York Steinway, but then I would play so many that were not really what I wanted in a piano. I was always told that a great New York Steinway was a treasure to behold, and I now know what they were talking about.

    • @seunggunchoi1690
      @seunggunchoi1690 7 лет назад

      ThePianoforever Boesendorfer was purchased by Yamaha. Almost European piano brands are suffering from affordable pianos. I alway want NY steinway to survive in this market and succeed their spirit, legacy and heritage. Many products were made for the profits of their own owners but NY steinway has more.
      SOUND and touch are different. Keep it. NY is much better than Germany's to me. Design is much beautiful. Only NY steinway has rectangular sides. It is really unique. Thank you for your kind answer. Bye.

    Excellent! The Steinway D has a distinctive sound to it (listen to any Horowitz recording; you'll hear it and be able to always identify it). I may have missed it, what was the year for this one?

  • @stephenallen1149
    @stephenallen1149 5 лет назад

    How fortunate you were to run into such an excellent instrument. Odd that it had been so little used, but that was to your advantage. Did the wealthy people just want it as an ornament? Hard to say. I was a bit astounded at the price of real estate in that area. Here in Southern Arizona we also have pricy real estate; but things are more open, land-wise; properties can be quite large, and the mountain views are generally excellent if you are fortunate enough to be able to live in such areas. Then there is Hawaii: I had relatives there once, and they said that everything there is expensive, including (especially!) real estate. Fortunately they were able to get one of the better condos, which, although in high-density Honolulu, gave them a very good view out over the ocean, with the beach nearby. I imagine it is about the best big city one could live in.

    I thought you'd go for the Hamburg D or the Bose 280VC. Congrats on your NY D.

    • @ThePianoforever
      @ThePianoforever  7 лет назад

      I thought so too! I have seen some used Hamburgs, only about ten years old that no longer had the power that this 23 year old piano has. I felt that if it still had the volume after 23 years it would be good for a long time yet. I am starting to become a believer in quality used pianos.

    • @ThePianoforever
      @ThePianoforever  7 лет назад

      No, it is very easy to regulate a piano, and in my series "The Piano Forum" I plan to show you how to do all your own maintenance in a very simple way. In that series it is set up so you can ask questions about pianos and I will tell you the answer, find you the answer, or tell you where I think you should look for the answer.

  • @robydean7

    I havent seen all your videos yet but I am curious about your decision. Is the SS D that you chose in fact the best instrument you played or was it the best for the price that was being asked by the sellers? Shopping for instruments is truly a lot of fun. I drove to Nashville a few years back to buy my dream acoustic guitar... that fit my budget that is lol. Enjoy your piano. Maybe you can do a series on your studio one day

    • @ThePianoforever
      @ThePianoforever  6 лет назад +1

      The Steinway I purchased is an excellent piano for sure. Steinway is one of 3 or 4 pianos on the very top of the list of the world's greatest pianos, but the best one would always depend on many factors. The used concert grand has some fantastic buys are out there right now like the Yamaha CF that I recently did a video on. ruclips.net/video/opMieWHfGGc/видео.html I had a chance to purchase my N.Y. D for about 20 percent of the new price, and could not resist. The Yamaha CF was also an excellent price, and would have made a great option as well. If you can buy a fantastic used concert grand for 20 - 25 percent of the new price it would be impossible for us to pass up such a deal. The studio series is in the works, and we will be uploading another video this Saturday about a special piece of recording equipment we just purchased for the studio.
