Buying what you need and not buying other shit is not "under" consuming, and this trend really just demonstrates how wild consumption has gotten. It's also called frugal, which used to be an honest to God value people would instill in their kids for obvious reasons. But happy to see the current generation at least address it in some way.
Right. Buying only what you need or can use before it goes bad is just plain, regular old "consumption." When I first saw the term, "underconsumption," I assumed it meant patching worn out clothing, or upcycling/repurposing items that would otherwise go in the trash.
One cool thing to consider is the trickle down effect of conscious consumption content Even in non-conscious consumption spaces, I often hear people discussing how they don’t need another neutral eyeshadow palette or matte or radiant foundation or how they don’t need more blushes or highlighters. I think a lot of folks are learning to choose wiser with purchases because of content like yours even if they frequent trend mood or follow creators like Mikayla/glamzilla
Personally, the main way I practice "underconsumption" in my own collection is by not buying palettes. I made a very conscious decision from the start to focus on single shadows as a way of limiting packaging and product waste, and also saving money and space - and it was the freaking best makeup decision I ever made! 🙌🏻
@@BelleStreetBoyz rearranging your singles into different color stories was the early version of palettes and we didn't have all the clutter and waste 15 years ago. But it's pretty hard to keep selling us crap that way so they came up with palettes. 😂
You are the one who inspired me to change my relationship with maleup and now I appreciate it even more. I love to see used products and I am so much more responsible now. So thank you ❤
I remember being a teenager and being annoyed when I hit pan on an eyeshadow and i 'had to' buy a new one. Nowadays there is so much make up we see it as a great job done when you finish something. And it is everywhere on RUclips /social media. People that are in to adult coloring have way to many coloring books, me included. I bought 2 cross stitching sets. And found people on RUclips with more than they will ever can cross stitch in their life's. Over consumption is everywhere.
When you said something about “using things you’ve spend your hard earned money” on it really stuck out to me. Maybe the issue with so many these days is that their money wasn’t “hard earned” or that they didn’t spend money on it at all. It changes the value of things.
Even though it might be a fleeting idea for most people, if underconsumption being a "trend" introduces a new generation to the concept then I think it's a great thing. Maybe it won't click with everyone long term, but if it opens anyone's eyes, that's awesome. 👍🏻
Great video and pretty look! I've been wearing make up over 30 years. I never look at the expiration dates. I just looked for the signs that a product has gone bad. There are certain categories that make up that I don't bother to try to pan like bullet lipsticks. My collection of those is too large but I love having Variety. I've always panned mascara's, lip glosses, balms, powder and more. Blush and eyeshadows last forever It seems. I don't rush out to buyThe newest latest thing. I enjoy what I have.
Very cute look! I dont mind this "trend." Maybe calling it a trend is silly, but I don't think of it the way I've seen many comments potray it as "cosplaying poverty." If someone has the ability to waste more but chooses not to, I think that's great.
I agree im shocked on how many ppl hate this “trend” when it can influence a younger audience to be more environmentally conscious and aware that they dont NEED the latest product and it shows that theres a cute community for it lol
I’ve really been enjoying Erin Taylor’s videos where she shows her spreadsheets to hold herself accountable for what she spends on various categories of makeup and skincare. She also has a lot of recommendations for repurposing/repressing products that didn’t work for her as originally intended (i.e. reformulating lipsticks into blushes for example). Watching her videos has helped motivate me to use what I have before buying something new and I recreated an eyeshadow from a color that was too dark for me by blending it with a highlighter and repressing it! It went from an eyeshadow I never used to one that I can use everyday! Keep up the good work Sarah! We all need reminders from time to time to keep things simple. 😉
You are such an inspiration to me. I went back in time and listened to all your RUclips videos and your vlog since you started. I did an inventory of all my health and beauty products to help me lower my inventory, hit pan, and use my older products. Thank you so much for taking the time to share all your tricks and experiences with us.
This is my first year trying to pan items. I'm loving it, I'm finding it so satisfying to see things loved and used up. The one area where I am NOT a panner is eyeshadows. I have over 150 palettes and I love them all and try to cycle through them. I don't plan on finishing any and I've never hit pan 😂 my other categories I'm really trying to lower my numbers this year and so far so good!!
I 100% agree that corporations need to make major changes to have any effort on climate change… but I still continue to “do my part”. I absolutely love your content especially because you are considerate of your footprint/consumption/usage.
I'll admit I went a little crazy when I really got back into makeup during the pandemic. Now I just try to focus on using what I have vs buying all new stuff. I get a wonderful sense of accomplishment when I pan a product and when I use up an entire product. But I also am not going to use up a product I don't like (if I've exhausted all possible way to use it) just to use it up. Blush is my weakness, but instead of buying every new blush launch (a great exercise in self-control!), I started layering blushes to get different shades and effects. I also just got some tools to depot some shades out of palettes I don't feel drawn to, but have shades I want to keep or use more. I was inspired by you for that!
I'm hoping it's only the influencers that overconsume as much as they do...the rest of us normal people are hopefully not participating in overconsumption for whatever reason, and I think it's just refreshing for us normies out here seeing things that we already have in life as "enough" when we are incessantly sold things we don't have so that our lives can be "better". That's why I personally think it's so popular. For once people aren't trying to sell us sh**!

Reduce, reuse, recycle were said in that order for a reason. I am absolutely on board with recycling, but I do agree that it should be last, and we should all know what is actually recyclable in our community. Ours doesn't take glass, and only plastics 1 and 2. It's very limited.
I hate SheIn and temu so much so if this is making people shop there less then great 😂 it's terrible quality for no cost and if it costs nothing, obviously no one is getting paid
I rolled my eyes too 😅 and honestly I don't expect the trend to make a difference... maybe there's a couple of viewers here and there, that will become a more mindful consumer... but that's it. 😏
Yes I completely agree on all points , I worked on changing my beauty consumption habits a lot over that several years and learned better habits on keeping track of what I have and what I really enjoy using and it actually makes me happier knowing what I like and really using what I like
The ugly part of this trend is the fact that bug influencers are throwing out products and things. Literally throwing out tons of stuff, getting the clicks from this trend and then they will get a ton of makeup again anyway. Every single trend gets used like this and it never makes a difference. They just say a the word Underconsumption until it doesn't get clicks and they will move on. The real underconsumption is project panners, mindful buyers, frugal buyers. These terms don't get clicks tho so only certain people care.
I always ask myself if I really need another blush, bronze, eye shadow et al. This is definitely a first world problem when you think about how most of the world lives. Anyway, i don't need more beauty products regardless of how pretty it's all made to look. Thanks for talking about it. However, if we really followed this idea perfectly there wouldn't be any beauty channels, because content creators are the ones who influence us. It does seem like there are endless launches, however because that's how the brands make money.
To be honest I also had a little laugh when I heard you say that underconsumption is not new because it's been on RUclips for at least 10 years 🙃 I don't know anyone in real life who has more makeup than they have been influenced by beauty RUclipsrs (no shade, I'm one of them and I still love beauty youtube) but in the grand scheme of things that's a tiny tiiiiny percentage of people! I see you're touching on this as I'm writing lol but even people who don't have financial problems for the most part don't just go crazy buying a ton of makeup when they have some already. We're just in our little makeup/ beauty loving capsule 😊
I dont share your aprehension about this trend. I feel like any amount of time we put the spotlight on normal consumption rather than over consumption will lead to positive outcomes. I understand where you are coming from. As someone who has been on the train for years and years its frustrating to see it suddenly pop up as "cool"
given the internet's tendencies to from one extreme into the next, I'm really hoping we won't see an overconsumption trend in a few months/years from now...why is it so hard to strike moderation ppl😅
I rarely watch makeup reviews/hauls/new makeup releases because I just don’t have a reason to buy makeup anymore. #1 reason why I stopped watching Laura Lee is because she does insane PR/shopping hauls. The amount of free shit she gets and never uses just drives me insane. Even her reviews rub me the wrong way because there’s no way she can adequately test that many products. Love what you had to say in this video!
THANK YOU. I am so tired of hearing this! It's propaganda, plain and simple. And there's no reason a Too Faced concealer should cost 20% more now than in 2021, other than corporate greed. (No shade to Sarah! You are awesome.)
I definitely don't believe this "trend" will last 😂😂😂 because tiktok trends come and go so quickly. I have been buying more products than I was. I was on a no buy for 2 years and recently I haven't gone crazy shopping but I have been feeling like wanting to buy more. It really depends on how I am feeling mentally in my life 😅 I bought 2-3 blushes this year and a couple of single shadows and I am already feeling like I need to go back on a no buy 😢
I keep thinking that actual underconsumption would have to just mean consuming less than what you need. So in other words: Being too poor to be able to afford food, medicine, or housing. Seeing that word being used to describe what I would call a moderate level of consumption feels kinda gross to me, tbh.
Just a thought, and this is not me being hostile to you I LOVE YOUR CONTENT, but what would be the difference between this trend and monetizing underconsumption the way the "low buy" community already does? I dont see it as cringe at all, whatever inspires people to make our world a little better :)
@@taraa4281 I want people to make more money off of underconsumption and low buy content!
