Great to see the Senior Service been an ambassador for the key skills these days. The logistics trade is so undervalued but without it, no force can operate without significant cost. RAF
Nice video - you need 2 things to make a good ship - a respected Captain and a good Chef (Cook), both affect morale and he looks at home on HMS Severn. Cheers
Definitely I’m an ex RN PO Chef. We were always the brunt of jokes, but just good banter. Great food really helps a ships moral. Just as if the food isn’t upto it. They will soon let you know.
My grandfather served on HMS Severn in WWI. The stories from that era are incredible. A book was written about her escapades in Africa (Severn Saga) and her involvement in the sinking of the German warship Koenigsberg. Great to hear she is being recommissioned.
Para Denzil Conick describing the stretcher party lying over him to shield him from the mortar shrapnel after he lost his leg in the Falklands. Almost on the verge of tears describing the party he then snapped it back and explained how they were all cooks and that was the hardest course in the Parachute Regiment. You all know the rest. Deep respect and love but he never got sentimental about it. Catch Jim Davison talking about Denzil's comment to Simon Weston. I dear not write it down.
I love to see the new dazzle paint jobs on the ships. Totally pointless for today's weapons but hey, what the hell it looks cool and it's a salute to the past.
The ' Dazzle ' is still good for use today. For Anti-pirate work, drug and people smuggling, where the criminals don't have military grade radar systems. Breaks up her outline and size.
We should stop more ships from retiring and use them for less demanding operations closer to home rather than decom and sell them to other navies. I appreciate they're lower tier but surely more refits would make them viable against some of the less advanced threats we face? After all, some of those hostile state navies operate ships way older & without refits.
Too right, the government seems to be shifting the goalposts with these ships trying to pass them off as ersatz frigates in areas of the world where the fishery protection ,police type armament /defensive setup just doesn't cut it ! 👍
@@johngreen-sk4yk I agree. I'm not asking for a 40 cell or more vls or something, but at least give it a 16 cell vls for some defensive and offensive capabilities. An iranian missile boat is more heavily armed for example. Hope to see them shift their prerogative in the future
@@ThatCarGuy BAE built some similar sized corvettes for the Omani navy, something on similar lines to them would make the river class batch 2,s more credible, the older batch 1,s could stay on the fishery protection at home. The ship is the navigational training ship so you need a particularly experienced captain to assess aspiring navigators. All the other OPVs have 2 1/2s as COs.
Very nice paint job but we could do with another 15 vessels just like it but Hay Ho global Britain and all that sort of thing......you can never have enough defence cuts!! ✂️
I’m getting a bit concerned with these paint jobs, first it was Tamar now this. Does that paint not affect other, more important aspects of the ships design? Are they just doing it for the cool factor & news headlines? If it really has no bearing on anything else, then sure, make our undersized token navy look dazzling. But otherwise, this needs to stop.
@@Kav. The reason the space shuttle external tank was orange, was because they found the white paint was adding an extra 600lbs to it. Tell me again it’s just paint. Secondly, the paint could result in the reflection of additional radar waves, increased corrosion, leading to increased costs in maintenance, on the Royal Navy’s already tight budget, might not be the smartest action.
@@Pax.Britannica the ship is already a massive radar signature, ship paint is not particularly radar absorbent. But more to the point the OPVs don't deal with threats that are likely to be pinging it with radar. But even so it makes no difference because they don't use some special fancy stealth paint. Interesting fact about the paint job, that really gave me a deeper insight and I do enjoy your reports and documentaries. Keep it up!’ 👍

My great grandfather also served on the Severn. He passed in '28 so we don't have many stories, some great photos though.
Comes complete with it’s own pedestal-mounted Viewmaster at 1:30 I see.
Hope they have a nice selection of slides for it.
Feel like I have a special affinity to this ship 🥰
WW2 Western approaches paint job, love it!
Just saw it this morning in Plymouth, beautiful indeed. 🤘
always loved the western approaches scheme ! Fits all sizes .
Can Ricardo post his curry recipe for the rest of us to enjoy? :)
How about small boat patrol in the channel !!
Looks sharp. Made me feel proud, and I'm a Yank.
Ricardo Providence what an absolutley brilliant name 👍
so the equvilant of a mini-bus for the channel crossings?
Nicely decorated …! But do the curtains match ?
I think that camouflage is still relevant even in modern navy.
They're changing it from Ocean Gray to Military Gray. Something that should've been done a long time ago.
wished they'd bring back the paint schemes from the old Battleship days
Dazzle??? That’s an ugly paint scheme. Not even practical anymore.
@@Pax.BritannicaI'm not an expert, but surely with how advanced radar/sonar etc, it doesn't matter what paint job you have.

Excellent now the dingy people won’t see it coming. Off to Dover with it.
Are you frightened of them?

It'd be nice to show us the ship. No point just talking about it.
