    FAQs-
    Q: "Where is this?"
    A: Our fire house is located in the town of Willow Street, just south of Lancaster City, Lancaster County Pennsylvania.
    Q: "What is the spinning thing?"
    A: That is called the "Roto-Ray," it is a spinning light designed to catch drivers attention.
    Q: "Why is the call so far away?" or "Why does it take so long to get there?"
    A: Many of our responses, or at least many of the ones that are uploaded are responding to assist other departments. Usually another firehouse can be seen or is passed by who is already on the call. We can reach the far end of our first due in West Lampeter Twp within 5 minutes, and in Providence Twp about 7.
    Q: "What camera are you using?"
    A: For dash cams I use a GoPro Hero 12 Black, helmet cam videos I use a FireCam 1080

    As a career firefighter for 33 years and for the past 8 years a district chief I can tell you that a 100 watt siren only project 12 feet if your traveling 55 MPH. ( that’s if your standing outside ) With the newer vehicles becoming more sound deadening people can’t hear you. Studies have shown people will see you before they hear you. The more emergency lights you have, you will more than likely be seen before you are heard. Funny but true story. I was responding to a MVA with injuries and I was pulling out from a side road to a main road sitting there as traffic was passing me by not yielding and I saw a car that looked identical to my wife’s that went right past me. I get home at the end of my shift and she asks me “ hey was that you I pasted ? I didn’t hear your siren until I already pasted you. I saw your lights but thought you were sitting there for some reason”. So we did a little experiment. I was in my district chief Tahoe and my deputy chief was 20 feet in front of me ( in a Tahoe )and we drove down the road at 40 MPH with my 200 watt siren wailing and he couldn’t hear me.

      It really is an interesting experiment with results that you would not expect when you are thinking about it until you actually test it.

      I heard that the power Call was louder than the Federal Q, is that true?

    • @justanotheraviator2357
      @justanotheraviator2357 7 месяцев назад +9

      @@mattjohnston7686 The Q2B is louder than any of the electric siren options today due to its construction. It is an electromechanical siren meaning it spins the impeller and the sound is produced mechanically as the air passes through the impeller and the casing, instead of being broadcasted through a speaker.

      @@mattjohnston7686 Absolutely not. The powercall tones aren’t any louder than any other electronic siren. At 40 MPH with my 200 watt electronic siren on wail and then yelp my deputy chief was unable to hear me with me and I was only one car length behind him ( about 12-15 feet). To close for safety when your driving emergency. However in a heavy traffic situation I find people don’t even know your behind them. With your windows up and radios playing music cars are designed for a “ quite” ride. After that test one of my engines got behind me with their Q screaming and they were about two car lengths behind when I barely heard then. The officer stood on the Q the first time then pressed the peddle for a few seconds and off a few seconds same results. Standing outside along the road you could hear the Q loud before the electronic siren. Sitting in a parked vehicle along the side of the road you could hear the Q but didn’t know what it was. It almost sounds like machinery running. Then we tested the electronic siren and the Q at the same time and really not a big difference. In a vehicle driving 40 MPHand one parked along the side of the road everyone said they didn’t really hear them until they were right on top of them. The firefighters standing outside said they could hear the Q over the electronic siren first and then heard the electronic siren as the engine was passing them. We did all this testing at out training facility that is flat with just a few building, no tress , no traffic , no other road sounds, no other environmental sounds to distort the sound of the sirens. Sounds travels in a straight line. It bounces off obstacles so real world roadways affect the distance and decibel level a lot. Since our testing we added a LOT of forward facing lights on out entire fleet and significantly seen an improvement in vehicles yielding far before we are on their bumpers.

      The Q is a wonderful sound screaming through traffic. My dad was the Chief Engineer for quite a few years and he certainly put the Q to work when he drove the engine. The tanker didn’t have a Q so he had to improvise with changing sirens and extensive use of the air horn.

    As a career firefighter with 35 years experience and the last 9 years as a district chief I can assure you all that noise ( power call and “Q” ) aren’t being heard by anyone on the vehicles in front of you. I have a 2023 Chevy Tahoe with a two hundred watt sire dual speakers and people DON’T move out of the way. After doing a little homework and reading what some universities have found out it was better understood. The siren on all apparatus had a limited effective range of 26 to 40 feet depending on the circumstances. While you can clearly hear the siren in the apparatus the same cannot be said for motorists on the roadway. Modern automotive designs are make for QUITE interiors and with the radio playing your favorite music and the windows up and the AC or Heater fan in you CAN NOT hear the approaching emergency vehicle. The study also shows the vehicles in the cross intersections can not hear you until you within 20 of the intersection and the “ Q” sounds more like a loud piece of machinery when it’s not complimented with short burst of the air horn. My municipality went and equipped the Chiefs, deputy chiefs, assistant chiefs vehicles more more forward facing along with side intersection lights. I personally see people getting out of my way a whole lot sooner than ever before. I purposely didn’t use my siren one day and had better results with people moving over sooner then ever before. Right now the rest of our fleet will be getting outfitted with more forward and intersection lights to make them alot more visible. Making all that noise is just making you deaf.

    I spent 25 years as a EMT-IV EVO (Emergency Vehicle Operator) The best thing to do or use is defensive driving habits. What ever the emergency is, If you don't get to it safely, you are not helping or doing your job. You can have all the technology in the world and it will not fix stupid.

      I don't know about there, but where I live in a rural area, not every fire department has a ladder truck. In my county, there is only one ladder truck among the 8 or 9 fire departments. Most departments can't afford to buy one.
