Barbie.Christi and p.j. ken and (Brad the black ken ) and Steven 2 ( the black ken) I grow up with barbie I had no problem with it.teresa . Kia and Hawaii barbie and around world barbies. Those barbies was for everygirl in late 70s 80s and 90s and mid 2000s.

True, but let's be real... most of the time Barbie was mainstream marketed as Blonde & blue eyed, so whilst they had other minority Barbie's, they were more of an afterthought & also priced lower than the originals as well.

Double standards
I actually loved The Barbie Movie. I was worried it would be all about how men are bad, but it actually had something far more nuanced to say. It illustrated that both women and men face challenges as part of their gender group. Women and men experience different pressures. Both men & women need personal development and to get beyond shallow answers about what success looks like. Sometimes Ken was the antagonist, but in the 3rd act they made him a true protagonist, as well. It was really well done. I feel they gave Ken a great opportunity to speak for the pressures and heartbreak that men experience. It was really funny even as your heart went out to him. Well done.
Ken is so fun. All the Ken actors are fantastic. I would love them or Gosling Ken to have a movie.

All this Barbie talk reminded me of how my mother took a great deal of time to cut out and sew a Barbie outfit for my doll. I just took what she did for granted. I did not show enough appreciation for all her hard work. We learn too late.

People criticize Barbie for being an unrealistic role model...which i understand to a degree. But i think kids have far more imagination than that.
Rather than saying "I'm going to be like this doll" they say "I'm going to make this doll be what I want it to be." It can be a catalyst for creativity.
Hence the "weird Barbies" like Kate McKinnon plays in the movie...with the mismatched outfits and the choppy haircut that never grows out. 😂

I loved Barbie growing up. Just my childhood memory. My brother had so many toys but this seemed to me as more geared towards girls dreams of adulthood. But now there are different ones.
I loved my Barbies growing up. I had the books, video games, Barbie jeep, clothes and I remember begging my mom to buy me the matching Barbie pj set She said I can only get get either the pj set or a new Barbie sofa 😂 I picked the new Barbie furniture for my Barbies 😂

Proud of these two women hailing from Sacramento, Ca. They produced a thought-provoking movie about finding our true selves, instead of following this path that we have been brainwashed in that we have to look like stereo type Barbie, and fall for Ken, rather than Ken being a friend. Our Barbies played with our brother's action figures/ WWE figures, so It was funny seeing John Cena as a Merman/Barbie Mermaid's Boyfriend. . . It was fun seeing so many groups of women and girls and even some men, of all ages donning pink/ or the stripes in support of one or most famous toys for girls growing up. It was actually fun, and had cameos with Rhea Pearlman as Barbies Creator, and Will Ferrell as Mattel's CEO, Kate McKinnon as Weird Barbie, etc.
Feel proud of her too. I'm from the region and she and some of the characters from her movies remind me so much of the people I grew up with. She's got a very relatable vibe.

I had to confirm the date, but I was pretty sure I played with them when I was a little girl I wish she hadn’t gone there with the conversation because it didn’t add anything to the discussion of what the movie is actually presenting.
I saw the movie last night. It is much better than I expected. It’s very deep and thoughtful. Also, I am putting it out there, I was not a Ryan Gosling fan until this movie. This is an award-winning performance from him.

To Sunny’s point about not having Barbie because there were none at that time that looked like her, I’m full brown, dark brown, grew up when Barbie didn’t have race options and am so grateful my parents looked past the colour issue and just let me be free to play and not be bogged down with the burden of race and colour. There is plenty of opportunities for that in other areas of life. Frankly, I found Barbie boring and she ended up collecting dust on my toy shelf, even so, I never resented that she didn’t look like me, mainly because that thought didn’t even occur to my child brain at that time.
Not sure if you’ve ever heard of “the doll test”, but representation absolutely does matter.

The thing I loved most about Barbie was how fun it was. It was so bright, and funny, and powerful in some spots. And sad in others but I actually had fun watching it. It was cool to dress up again in pink and be with an audience that engaged in it, I haven’t done that in years. Like when I was in my school days going to midnight shows of Harry Potter.

She said "everyone" which means men and women were complimenting and high-fiving Ryan, then looking at Margot and not saying anything.
Someone said on Venice Beach people wouldn't be laughing at them, like in the movie. And it seems weird someone would smack Barbie with Ken standing next to her. She punches the character, but we don't get follow-up to her anger or use of violence.

Wow, Ms. Gerwig is so thoughtful and impressive. By thoughtfully taking on a project that her own mother -- to say nothing of Gloria Steinem & the editorial staff of "Ms. Magazine" -- have mixed feelings about, she reminds us what it means to be an "artist"...and how artists can and always have prevailed, even in the most difficult of times...by inviting us to think, and presenting us with questions & ideas -- in the guise of entertainment. (And while truly entertaining us.) For those of us who are old enough to have actually experienced 2 of the things Ms. Gerwig references in this interview -- the Apollo 11 mission & the advent and widespread use of Credit Cards -- it's heartbreaking that American society has come to a place where people are motivated to gin-up controversy around Ms. Gerwig's film...rather than having an honest conversation about the thoughts & feelings the ideas in film gives rise to. In the end, many great works of art over the centuries have tackled the question: "What does it mean to be human?" And it seems that -- in an ingenious twist on how "science fiction," by presenting the author or filmmaker's vision of "the future," is often a commentary on "the way we live now" -- Ms. Gerwig asks the eternal artistic question, by presenting us with (not to put too fine a point on it) "a doll's life." Granted, it's a simple idea -- but one that's breathtaking in its ambition and chutzpah, given Barbie's iconic status and universal presence in American homes. It may be a tad melodramatic, to compare Ms. Gerwig's film to Theo Angelopoulos making "The Travelling Players" during the Regime of the Colonels -- but I can't deny that's what came to mind. And finally, there's this: Isn't "art" supposed to reflect the word around us? When we're in-line these days at a WalMart or Costco -- or we're walking through Disneyland or New York City with our families on vacation -- doesn't the environment today more resemble Barbie's beach in Ms. Gerwig's film -- than it does an episode of "Father Knows Best" or "The Andy Griffith Show"? People tend to forget, I think, that the artist's "job" is to reflect the world as it is -- and then contemplate what that means -- all in the knowledge that "no matter what," the so-called Human Condition has never changed. (Which is why Greek tragedies & Shakespeare still speak so powerfully to us today, despite their absence of airplane travel and microwave ovens.) At the end of the day, people who make their living on social media arguing about Ms. Gerwig's casting choices -- whether they're "Pro" or "Con" -- are missing the point, I think. Something 100% of we humans has, is an internal life...and that's something no amount of "diversity" -- or lack thereof -- is capable of changing, any more than it can change the fact that fish swim, and birds fly. It's one of the things that makes each of our lives so unique, and so precious. And like all works of art, I suspect that will enable Ms. Gerwig's film to endure -- to be pondered by future generations, many of whom won't have "grown up with" Barbie dolls. Last but not least, a final measure of Ms. Gerwig's artistry, is the song Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas wrote for the film. I don't usually comment, but while the movie isn't for me -- you can't help but notice what a big deal it seems to be...and I just thought Ms. Gerwig was very impressive. I guess it's possible to be happy someone who's trying to make art -- while being entertaining at the same time -- is having notable success...without buying a ticket to their film.
Barbie was originally Lilli, a scandalous doll created from a character in the German tabloid Bild. It was very smutty, and men bought the dolls for laughs and giggles.
Ruth Handler brought some of the Lilli dolls home to Germany, and rebranded them after her daughter , who was called Barbie.
So there you are. Barbie was originally a German sex doll called Lilli.
There are a couple good docs about Barbie history.
Barbie was not originally a Bill Lili doll. Barbie was INSPIRED by her and merely modified to be marketed as a fashion doll towards children. but Bild Lili was not a fashion doll as her shoes couldn’t come off and she was not created to be undressed. Bild Lili was based on a newspaper comic about a call girl, who was then created as a souvenir as a gag toy for adults. Ruth Handler then saw the potential in this item and created a DOLL based on an idea that combined paper dolls with Bild lily. The original Barbie looked like Bild lily but was different in the terms of her internal mechanics & the ability to undress and redress. She was also modified to be able to be targeted towards children.

I was worried that it was going to be a man-hating movie, but I’m so glad that it wasn’t. It was so fair, wholesome and touching. The movie truly had something for everyone. It was very nuanced and very human.

Honestly this film was incredible… they did this film so perfectly. The way they dealt with the complex themes is just wonderful. Very impressed with the film and can not wait to see it again.

I’m so confused... Ryan Gosling is a wealthy, privileged, white male in real life. Doesn’t that make him part of the Patriarchy??? Barbie is a wealthy, privileged, white career gal without any children... doesn’t already make her perfect? Someone explain this to me, PLEASE! Who am I supposed to like in this film? What is the moral of the story? If a full grown adult doesn’t understand what this story is trying to teach her, children don’t have a chance. There are so many contradictory themes playing throughout this movie. At least it’s pretty... but doesn’t that thought, in itself, make me stereotypical? If the point was to utterly confuse people and pit them against each other, mission accomplished. Oh, and every main character in this film is WAY too old to play with Barbie! 5-year-olds play with Barbies... not 16 year olds. So... why is Sasha in the movie? When I was almost a year old, my mother asked me what I wanted for my birthday. Apparently, I was Barbie obsessed and up until my birthday drove my parents crazy. We were very poor, so I got the thin plastic, non-movable, unbranded, .99 cent doll and insisted on sleeping with it. I don’t know what the appeal was... it was inherent, because obviously, 11-month-olds aren’t indoctrinated by the patriarchy.🤷🏻♀️
