    Secret cableway trick for a real game is to replace a couple of passenger cars with cargo cars. Would need only a very small redesign to supply food from the factory to the shop in town

    Buses seem like the easy option, because construction is simpler, but it can still be tricky to get them to run properly and consistently.
    When building rail, trams can be a good option if the distance is short enough. Just don't run them on the same track with faster trains.

    • @bballjo
      @bballjo  3 года назад +3

      Busses are always the easy option first, but then you increase the traffic slowly, and get into situations with traffic jams easily, additionally their capacity is limited... generally if I can handle something with 2-3 busses, and it's not super critical, they are usually my choice.. anything beyond that I try to find other solutions.

    Suggestion: normalize the production tonnage by tonnage per worker day. The tonnage is meant to represent worked days anyway. For example, steel tonnage should count a lot more than iron tonnage and more than food tonnage. It's probably to only use one type of production buildings too, for clarity. And that puts cableway miles ahead.
    Aside, part of the inconsistent worker levels at factory buildings is due to workers not having their shifts synchronized/randomized to optimize shift overlap. So when you do productivity testing, it's important to always have more jobs than there are workers. That looks to be the case already?

    • @bballjo

      I'm not sure that I'm not already doing all of this...but it's also been a while.

    • @any1alive

      I can kidna udnerstand that, each item is made at differant ratios per worker, if 1 worker makes 1 steel, but 1 worker makes 5 food, havign less food but a tiny bit more steel would make the ratios off,
      but yeah, i cant think how to word it better,
      if there was a way to just have 1 industry and see total amount worked, ie efficency/workers to max count per month,
      atleast thats 1 mod im waiting for, just a % sign that shows how many workers on average its gotten in the last week/month

    What about construction and operating costs of the various transport links? If you construct it yourself it is obviously hard to compare because they use different kinds of materials... but perhaps foreign contracting price is a reasonable proxy?
    Railways are such a pain in the arse to construct that I am thinking I might just use cableways from now on. They are overpowered in the game because journey lengths don't matter. They could balance it by deducting travel time from the length of the workday or something.
    Also I think the cars weren't used because you actually need to sell them to people with a car dealership, don't you?

    • @bballjo
      @bballjo  3 года назад +2

      Personally, since i aim for full independence when i play, i ignore any construction/operating costs because technically labor is free, if you supply everything yourself...and also over time the little bit of power or fuel that the machines use is negligible...at least IMO...i know others care more about this, but thats for the socialist to figure out, Lenin would not approve ;)
      Railways are a pain at first, i agree, but if you checkout my other tutorials or my current series, you may see that they aren't all that bad :D...also 'They' are all OP because the journey length doesnt matter for any of the transport options...its just a number, and there are many ways to get around them, so since they are all equal i really dont think you can call any of them 'OP', however, the travel time number are affected by current mood and education level (the time passes faster or slower compared to the peers), and it affects happiness if you make them travel more than the 5 hours they want (you can increase this to pretty much any time, but at some point they will escape).
      The cars had owners already, at least according to their info...i think it had something to do with me removing the road connections and then adding them again for the test...i think if i would have just sold all and rebought them again, the cars would have worked...but since there can only be 1 worker in each car right now, i would expect this group to be at the bottom of efficiency for this test...

    • @philippdapprich1163
      @philippdapprich1163 3 года назад +3

      @@bballjo There is still cost in a money-less socialist economy. Opportunity cost. Labour, steel and prefab panels used to construct a railway cannot be used to build other things. So that still constitutes a "cost". But at times things in this game are really "free", i.e. if you have no other use for some material anyway or your workers would simply be idling
      I am delighted to hear that long travelling does affect their mood. However, this should not only set in after 5 hours. Whether your commute to work is 4:59 hours or 10 minutes is a big difference. It should be reflected somehow. That it isn't makes cable ways too strong IMO. That the commute takes longer should be a massiv drawback. It is also one of the main reasons cable ways aren't used more commonly in cities today. The other being limited capacity (same as in the game). Otherwise cable ways really are a pretty cheap and reliable means of transportation and there is some growing interest in using them even outside of mountaineous terrain.

    • @bballjo
      @bballjo  3 года назад +2

      I very much agree with you.
      Labor is not free, but I find this to matter more in the beginning of the game, and after the mid game, but everything matters more in the beginning to an extend...I'm just saying in the long run its "free"...you could calculate the investment and ROI on all the different scenarios, and I'm sure someone could come up with some meaningful numbers, but that's not me :)
      But in the end the time scales in this game are rather scewed, as in a person's year take 1 in game week, yet a workday is 24 hours of that year...the time doesn't really add up, so getting into how long something takes gets complicated to find the right balance...I just play with what I'm given:)

    Interesing stuff. I wonder how trams would have performed? I use them quite a lot, they are a lot cheaper than trains and you can maintain a consistent level of workers when you space them correct with signals

    • @bballjo
      @bballjo  3 года назад +6

    Do you think some jobs can only be done with low skilled people, like concrete plant? I have 400 unemployed workers who just won't go there. A mistake I often make is, to remove the workers with university level education from the bus stop, to make sure they work in hospital or as teacher. When I have a uni in the town, and nearly all citizens there have that level of education, often I only realize that I need to add the checkbox again, when the level of workers drop severly in all buildings connected with this bus line.

    Hey bbaljo, lately I've noticed that I get a ton of passengers at my train and bus stops, but they won't get on any trains or buses, even if I designate them as passenger-only and send them to stops near amenities they're looking for. They also walk into the station wanting food when a grocery store is literally a few seconds away from their homes. Workers will board buses, but won't get off even when the bus stop gives them 4 places to work at and the bus is set to unload 100%. Do you have any ideas?

      In the end what you care about is the first fill-up of workers, and then bringing workers in at the same rate as they leave...for smaller factories, busses are generally fine (up to 130ish per bus load max)...but for larger counts you need to get creative, and just watch the incoming workers, and see if you can time it better.
