Phoebe Bridgers: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

  • Nov. 27, 2017 | Stephen Thompson --Phoebe Bridgers' songs come laden with sly, finely detailed observations about unsuccessful flirtations with hypnotherapy, unsettling conversations about Jeffrey Dahmer, and everything in between. Her phrasing is impeccable - warm, cool, conversational, gently slurred - but her songs also swim in the self-aware obsessions and messy meanderings of an unquiet mind.
Joined by Ethan Gruska and Rob Moose, Bridgers popped up at the Tiny Desk a couple weeks after the release of her full-length debut, Stranger In The Alps. Together, they celebrated the occasion with languid renditions of three of the album's best songs: the sad and seductive "Demi Moore," a drastically muted "Motion Sickness" and a piano-driven take on Bridgers' first-ever single, "Killer."
    Set List
    "Demi Moore"
    "Motion Sickness"
    "Killer"
    MUSICIANS
Phoebe Bridgers (vocals and guitar); Ethan Gruska (piano); Rob Moose (violin)

Producers: Bob Boilen, Morgan Noelle Smith; Creative Director: Bob Boilen; Audio Engineer: Josh Rogosin; Videographers: Morgan Noelle Smith, Bronson Arcuri, Alyse Young; Editor: Bronson Arcuri; Production Assistant: Niki Walker; Photo: Jennifer Kerrigan/NPR

How do you love rap when rap doesn’t love you back? From Rico Nasty’s harassment from toxic Carti fans, to Saucy Santana's unapologetically femme aesthetics in a queerphobic industry, to the assault case that put Megan Thee Stallion’s entire image on trial, each episode of Louder Than A Riot - the second season of our investigative hip-hop podcast - unpacks the unspoken rules of rap that hold the entire culture back. Tap in to our first episode at n.pr/louder-season-2.

Really glad that Ryan Adams got called out by all of the women, including Phoebe. The lyrics of Motion Sickness hit so much harder knowing more of the details that have come out, and she even introduces the song by saying "This song is when you are in love with someone who is really mean to you"

    • @GhostlyJorg
      @GhostlyJorg 5 лет назад +26

I like the song, but Phoebe shouldn't have dragged the guy in interviews with his name, unless she wanted to pursue some kind of sexual misconduct case. If she didn't want the relationship she shouldn't have started it or kept it going - don't involve fans

    • @Cherrie435
      @Cherrie435 5 лет назад +783

@@GhostlyJorg what you're implying here is that sexual misconduct is the ONLY punishable behavior he had, and that she should just have kept her mouth shut and be quiet about ALL the other things that he did such as being emotionally abusive and manipulative, things that are also very wrong in my opinion. Besides, you know thats incredibly hard for women to get justice in cases like this, right? sometimes things like that are the only effective way to get somewhat of a real reparation.

    • @GhostlyJorg
      @GhostlyJorg 5 лет назад +23

@@Cherrie435 "Besides, you know thats incredibly hard for women to get justice in cases like this, right?" - well, maybe that's the problem, then. Although I never heard any actionable accusations from the "case" as you call it.
I would say most people in this world have felt badly treated in a relationship at some point, and a lot have tried being emotionally abused. What we do is to extract ourselves from that relationship, suck it up and move on. It's hard, but life's not always easy. Maybe you warn other people in private if the situation warrants it. But going public like this is not cool. You open up to a situation where people are getting maligned by crazy amounts of people with no relation or knowlegde about the situation.
One could probably say that Phoebe got a lot out of that relationship, that prevented her from ending it when she should have. - But now I'm speculating about other people's relationship, that we know nothing about, and frankly I don't want to think about Ryan Adams when I hear that song... Leave us out of it

You are one out of thousands of fans that got revved up and acts with completely unearned certainty about a situation that none of us have a single clue about. I hate you for what you did
And I miss you like a little kid
I faked it every time, but that's alright
    I can hardly feel anything
I hardly feel anything at all
    You gave me fifteen hundred
    To see your hypnotherapist
I only went one time, you let it slide
Fell on hard times a year ago
Was hoping you would let it go and you did
    I have emotional motion sickness
    Somebody roll the windows down
There are no words in the English language
I could scream to drown you out
I'm on the outside looking through
You're throwing rocks around your room
And while you're bleeding on your back in the glass
I'll be glad that I made it out
And sorry that it all went down like it did
    I have emotional motion sickness
    Somebody roll the windows down
There are no words in the English language
I could scream to drown you out
And why do you sing with an English accent?
I guess it's too late to change it now
You know I'm never gonna let you have it
But I will try to drown you out
You said when you met me you were bored
You said when you met me you were bored
And you, you were in a band when I was born
    I have emotional motion sickness
I try to stay clean and live without
And I wanna know what would happen
If I surrender to the sound
    Surrender to the sound

Phoebe performed on Saturday Night Live, February 6, 2021. Like millennials say, l was shook by that performance. I started learning about her music and her two years ago, thanks to a you tube channel content creator, I subscribed to 3 years ago by an unknown singer songwriter living in GA.
I’m slowing learning about Phoebe Bridgers. Tonight is is Grammy Awards. Phoebe was a recent Grammy nominee for Best New Artist. I don’t know if she won.
This tiny desk concert was very nice. ❤❤👏👏👏👏👏
