Special Effects Tutorial: Hair Punching Tips

- In this tutorial we explain the basic types of hair punching and hair laying. We started with a Gel-10 head cast from a 74-30 rubber mold. This head was done fast for this video. A wax museum quality head of hair takes about 2-3 weeks to punch...at least. Consider this a starting point.

When I tried this myself.... my brother started bleeding out of all the little tiny holes I poked the hairs into.... is the clotted blood good for keeping the hairs in place?
No.
What in the hell are you talking about btw great video
@user-uv3np2qt3m it's a joke
I wonder hot they made an open mouth cast..
This is so badass. Thanks for sharing
Glad you liked it!
BEST TUTORIAL I HAVE SEEN.
I'm fully aware that I'm being super weird here... But you look like a older version of me! Even down to the hairstyle and beard! I've just shown my partner and she freaked out as much as I did. You weren't in the region of Manchester, England around 1982 were you? I think my mother might have a lot to answer for!
In 1982 I was 9, so unless DARPA used me in some type of hybrid genetic program you are safe.... but there is that lost time episode I had in early spring of '82...
Brick In The Yard Mold Supply You also look a lot like my boyf!
As always, great tutorial! I always like using my homemade needles but I may have to try out one of Lars' needles. They look really effective.
They are very nice. With practice you can apply hair to a head in a relatively short time and still get great results.
This is really helpfull!! Thought of giving you some words. How the human hair comes in those curtains of hair, those are called wefts, and what you call barbie hair is called "plugs" of hair. I reroot dolls so I'm familiarized with this term. Thank you for your videos!!
how did you do the open mouthed mould and casting? is their a video on it?
It's amazing ! Very, very good.
Did anyone else cringe when he stuck that needle right into the eye?
Super helpful video, really nicely done, thanks for posting. =)
Happy new
Year!
Thanks! Happy new year to you too! I should be outside setting something on fire but instead I am checking youtube comments....
He looks like he's in a lot of pain
Love your video
I have a " resin" head of Bela Lugosi I have painted but now stick for hairing it. I wondered how I could get the hairline done to look like hair punch? Could I spred a thickness of silicon or liquid latex at the hair line and let it dry, and then punch in hair like you do on silicon heads ? Any suggestions ?
For what reason would I want to buy human hair if I can get it of mi head??
Impressive video.
Great video! I was curious about this techniques
Sticking a needle in his eye made me cringe. Thanks for the needle tutorial. This is great stuff.
Question: You use the aquarium silicone. Would clear silicone caulk for bathrooms etc. (like DAP) be the same product? I'm guessing the aquarium tube is handier?
For some reason the bathroom (or door and window) sealant is not the same and doesn't seem to stick as well.
Can you brush the hair? I mean to style it, and cut it afterwards, what are the chances of pulling out a clump in the process? The "Lars' Needles", they look like felting needles. o.O I wonder how they'd work in comparison. Great video, as usual. :D
You can brush the hair after it's punched. It stays put very well even without glue. I'm not familiar with felting needles so I don't know how they compare.
What kind of glue? Will flour and water hold under time?
What's that type of spreading tool at 3:30? I've been looking for its name but I can't seem to find it, looks pretty handy.
Hi, I would actually like to use this method on my barbies i've been trying to learn more about this method but i still don't know how to make the hair stay when rerooting
Beautiful
Thanks!
No problem!
What is your advice for someone who really wants to do this as a living? I'm just starting out as a freelance cosmetologist/makeup artist, saving money to go to makeup school and study theatre/film makeup, and I would LOVE to do what you do!! Any tips?
Practice, practice, and more practice. If you are on a tight budget (as most of us are starting out) get some oil based clay and practice sculpting. Mastering sculpting human faces and features is one of the most valuable skills.
I'll do that. Thank you.
Happy New Year!!! =)
Thanks! Happy New Year to you too!!
It looks very realistic
I am making mummie for art show and need it very stable-thanks
