    Sure it is expensive but it works very well, the mechanism feels secure, quite tough and the cooling to noise performance is pretty good for the my SATA SSDs.

    Awesome info, the NVMe hub is exactly what I have been looking for. For the hotplug support, the critical part is the voltage and current shunting from the PCB. Ideally, a microcontroller that can hold the PCIe addresses space, PMIC shunt, and simulate safe shutdown would be perfect 😁

I got as far as automated scripts to rescan devices and power down to remove device, but true hot plug never worked. Something has to be plugged in when system boots up. That was on a X299 platform, perhaps time to restart this project with AMD

    Yeah, don‘t use the built-in fans for a 2 x P4510 + 2 x Optane 905P configuration. Mixed load is okay but when writing to all drives simultaneously the SSD controller temperatures go beyond 80 degrees Celsius. Going to test these bays with Samsung PM1733 PCIe 4.0 SSDs next, they should also handle Gen4.

      Although if you have a media server like Plex / Emby (or anything write heavy) running on such a system, set the temp transcode folder to the HDD array. If usage is high, it'll chew through the SSD endurance very quickly unless you use SLC NAND SSDs.

    that "ripe for disruption" comment has me interested. just before xmas i bought a cage to mount 3x 3.5" drives in 2x drive bays...
    i eventually found one i was satisfied with the price... but man, for what's in them, they seem to be priced at a considerable markup. but on the flip side, so was everything else.
    i wonder if there's some kind of patent licensing fee that is making it so expensive or something?

      Never upgraded to a USB 3 enclosure as the reviews are uninspiring. When you have the chipset which could have bugs/incompatibilities, the power supply which could be underspecced and the SATA cable that could just be defective (judging by said reviews) such an upgrade will never happen.

    You can also grab a Linkreal x8 or x16 card, that goes directly to the appropriate SFF connector and really scale out nvme with these enclosures. Bonus on those Linkreal cards: depending on the model, is they have an optional PLX switch, so you can go from 8->16 lanes or 16->32 lanes or get bifurcation working in a board that doesn't support it.
    I agree with Wendell though, much as the Icydock is quite cool (and even comes in a regular M2 form factor as well), it's very overpriced.

    • @malexejev
      @malexejev 3 года назад

      Interesting. What's the point of lanes doubling with PLX for storage? Looks data path between disks and CPU will anyway be limited by CPU lanes to the relevant mobo slot. The only point I could see is if some storage configs (raid1? raid10?) can utilise PLX for effective mirroring? But, even if that's the case - only for writes.

    I drilled out all the 3.5" and 5.25" bays in my Arc Mini after I was convinced they'd never be relevant again.

    At a point in every RUclips creators career, there must be a thumbnail that can easily be edited to have a certain part going in their mouth. It’s a fact of life.

    the EZConvert MB705M2P-B
    M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD to 2.5" U.2 PCIe SSD Converter Adapter
    is another option you could use with this dock
    they have another model that just uses m.2 bays but I find this model more flexible
    HighPoint has a number of NVMe Add-in Cards that work nicely with deployments like this

    Whats a guy to do? Wisdom required.
    Sata is dead in the water.. We dont have enough M.2 slots.... Whats the solution for folks wanting storage on consumer space?
    My main pc has an NVME boot >3.2GB/s but my 3x 2TB Sata SSD's run the same 500MB/s we've had for 8 years!!
    If a pcie4x1 lane was used for 2 sata we could forgo a single m.2 and gain 8x sata ports at 985MB/s.
    Why are we still stuck with what feels like the storage version of AGP.
    Are we REALLY wanting a future where a person buys a full ATX motherboard... for 1x graphics card, 2x M.2 (1cpu, 1 chipset) and that's it, An ITX system can do that!

    • @Hugh_I
      @Hugh_I 3 года назад

      well, at least with the full ATX motherboard you get all your remaining pcie lanes on pcie slots you can use for M.2 add-in cards. They are also way cheaper than this hot swap bay.
      If you need a large array of fast storage, go threadripper, that should have plenty of pcie lanes for that. If you really need an enormous amount of fast storage, epyc.
      The more cost effective strategy though would be to have a handful of fast NVME SSDs for what needs fast access, and large slow magnetic SATA drives for bulk storage. On Linux you can also use bcache or dm-cache to let the OS cache stuff for you on the fast NVMEs that you regularily access.

    The icydock fan's are loud trash and will die in a few months. Replace them with the 20mm Noctua's NF-A4x20. Other than being ugly, they are silent and have been running for years. Unscrew, unplug. Rescrew, replug. Done.
