  • In this final video on the Icy Dock MB975SP-B installation in the HP Z820, I'm finally going to connect it up with a custom built SATA/SAS cable. I will demonstrate that the unit works, and also showcase the Icy Dock MB822SP-1S-3B EZConvert as a special use case for offloading data off 2.5" SSDs faster than using a USB3-SATA adapter.

    Wow - this video series makes me realise the potential of my z820 is still strong in 2023

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  7 месяцев назад

      I think it's still a great machine and plenty useful. But the Z840 prices have come down a lot too, so that might be a better choice now.

      At this point the use case is to run a number of VMs during my office hours. It appears a CPU upgrade may help me as im on dual 2940s, and I may just take advantage of cheap memory prices to go to 256gb 😂. however it looks like there is a lot of over lap with the 840 cpu wise, so on a 840 I might only get a minimal perf gain over the potential of an upgraded 820. My thinking is keep my work horse going and then wait for a reasonable Z8 G4 maybe in a couple of years.

    I commend you for following all the way through on this project! I was considering this Icy Dock unit, but it just feels like way too much of a hassle to use. I was also immediately wary of accidental drive power-offs given the position and sensitivity of its power buttons, as you quickly noticed too in the first video of the series. I've enjoyed Icy Box / Icy Dock / Raidsonic products for years and it's disappointing to see such a poorly thought-out product with such a flimsy finish.

      Thanks! Yeah, this particular product does seem like it could be improved. But the issue with the "tabs" is not unique to Icy Dock... i think when you're trying to fit 5x3.5" in 3x.5.25", it is inevitable so I can't fault Icy Dock for that. I'm not a fan of the push buttons though...

    • @occidentalist
      @occidentalist 7 месяцев назад

      @@ArtofServer It does seem inevitable. It's too bad because this MB975SP is the best-looking drive bay I'd found, with its all-black panel and modern-looking blue LEDs. I've given up on these drive bays, I'll be getting a Fractal Design Define 7, which can hold up to 14 (yes 14!) 3''1/2 HDDs inside its mid-tower chassis, for a price that's ballpark comparable to that of this Icy Dock drive bay.

      Oh really? Is that positioning going to block a cord or something? Screw alignment? I do mean 180° not 90°.

    I bet those LED are different bining... And also serviceable ( removable and replaceable with identical bright bining blue LED lights round or square, Nichia, Cree, or even China made)...🤔💭😇

    how cool does that tiny fan keep 5 enterprise hard drives drives in that tiny space?

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  9 месяцев назад

      it works well enough, but the drives in the Icy Dock are a few degrees higher than those in the internal 4 bays

    Funny I got the same bright LED (two of six in my case) on my homelab server. Confused the hell out of me at the beginning because I thought the chassis wanted to tell me something.

    Hi there, thanks for the video. Do you plan to do any content on the HP Z6 or Z8 Gen 4 or 5 machines, that are now becoming very cost effective to use as a home workstation. I am thinking of trading in my fully specced out Z840 to get one of these newer generation machines, and needed some sort of thoughts/opinions and options. Keep up the great work you're doing for us.

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  Год назад +2

      You know, after HP changed the design since the Z800/Z820/Z840 generation, I just couldn't get myself to admire the Z8 Gen4 stuff. I think the previous design seemed more elegant and something I would like to see under my desk. The new design looks like a cheap PC case to me. Also, after the Haswell/Broadwell Intel generation, I think my next upgrade would be to an Epyc or Threadripper. I want more PCIe lanes! LOL That's just my opinion.

    I used a Athena Power BP-TLA2131SAC 3 bay in a Z840. It is running ProxMox with a Truenas Core VM that I pass the controller to. I have noticed that drives in the BP-TLA2131SAC run 4c-8c warmer (under load) than the drives in the stock drive bays. Do the drives in the Icy Dock show the same behavior?

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  Год назад +1

      Never heard of the Athena before, but it looks very similar to the ones being sold by brands like iSTARUSA, Monoprice, etc. Yeah, the Z840 was a lot easier with the 3x3.5" bays. This 5x3.5" bay solution was much more involved than I wanted, but I got it done.
      As for the drive temps, I haven't used this long term in this Z820 yet so I don't know for sure. On my HP Z840, with similar non-Icy Dock unit (see my other video), the drives run about 42-44C, but the internal 4 bays runs 37-38C.

    So while I'm sure you knew this my friend, the Startech 4x3.5 would have likely slid in here with zero mods. It's made with the channels. I put it in several of my old cases. I'm dumping my Z820 since I have two Z840 w/44c and two Dell T7910s w/44c. Trying to move out of DDR3 and keep everything high-core DDR4. We'll see. :) OH AND--guess who modified their T7910s with more drives after watching a certain video? Yep. And did you know (likely you do) you can actually put 8 2.5" SSDs (SAS or SATA) in here physically? Just need a decent LSI controller for the channels. You have to design a rigged mounting, but still.....

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  11 месяцев назад

      yes, as mentioned in my unboxing video of the icy dock unit, the 4x3.5" enclosures have no problems because they have the channels. it's specifically the 5x3.5" enclosures that all seem to have this issue and require modifying the case, and in this case also the enclosure.
      I still find the Z820 pretty useful machine even today. But yes, with the price drop of DDR4 ECC RAM this year, I think that makes Z840 and other DDR4 platforms much more affordable for home server setups.
      thanks for watching my channel and sharing your thoughts! :-)

    Hello AoS I am building a setup for someone and they want me to include 24 hard drives, his advice was to reach out to you, I’ve copied the message into my comment.
    What’s the best way to chat or if you can list what to order from your store that would work for our project it would be greatly appreciated!
    “If you want to reach out to AoS and ask for a solution for a 30 HDD JBOD, he’ll be able to help. “
