Hey Noah, great video. Thank you. However, do you know of any particular place where I can learn about this more comprehensively? I need more details and a compact knowledge of the materials.
@@divyabaranwal6825 sorry I don't know of any resources specifically, I would look to see if there's any forums on auto-materials. This is just what I was able to come up with trying to figure out how to do it.
@@NoahIlberyChannel thank you for replying. The course I chose in udemy was outdated to state the least. I finally have found courses in unreal Engine itself. Quite knowledgeable and free... I would try my hand there...
you rock dude :) Much appreciated.. keep up the good work.. hope you can do something about the video quality... 1080p is like 720p upscaled for some reason..
The moment u realize, this video is not all about entertainment.. It contains really specific and valuable information under 60 minutes! Really nicely done man, u should stream right from unreal HQ :D
_thank you!_ this is the only tutorial I could find that actually showed how to add foliage to certain parts of an automaterial. all the rest either skipped over foliage, or were like "just download _my_ material and use it"
best tutorial ive seen. only one that combines landscape layer blends and auto materials, and also shows how auto foliage integrates into it. brilliant.
mate fair play, so many tutorials and they just rush through everything or skip. really appreciate your pace, your wit and the coherence. great tutorials
I built a very complex landscape material which led into really heavy stuff on graphic memory using slope functions, tessellation and other things. With this video, thanks to you, it becomes much less complex with the world aligned blend. And in fact it gives perfect result without having to go deeper into the rabbit hole. Thanks again.
Not many auto material tutorials out there, thanks for the information. Even looked through 3 years worth of unreal's videos and none of them are a tutorial on auto materials.
Thanks a lot. This is my go-to material for landscapes now. You managed to tick all the boxes without complicating the material beyond what I can understand and tweak, and you explained every part. I appreciate it.
Noah, Dude. Thank you for making this and not skipping over important steps like a lot of other videos. I'm new to UE4 as well and this tutorial is awesome.
This video walkthrough was absolutely excellent. I loved how you talked about everything and demonstrated WHY that needed to be that way. Thank you a ton.
Thanks, man. I've made some landscapes previously (couple years ago) and COMPLETELY forgot most of it. Needed a refresher that didn't move too fast, or too slow. It fit perfectly.. wasn't so fast that I didn't catch it, and wasn't so slow and OVERLY-explanative that I end up screaming "NO SHIT! GET ON WITH IT ALREADY!" I think you did great.
I got to say that this was probably one of the best and most entertaining unreal engine tutorials on landscape materials, I've seen so far (and I've seen a lot!)! THANK YOU very much for this amazing content!!
Very good tutorials. You covered a lot of good stuff here. Been trying to figure out how to make auto landscape materials for ages and after watching your video, 1 evening and it's all working. This tutorial was very well explained and easy to follow, much appreciated.
Brother, you just made a tutorial for something people charge for on the store, make 23 parts for on RUclips, and did it all in under 30min. Bless your heart and thank you hahahahaha
Hey man - big thanks for this awesome 2in1 tutorial! I know this was a while ago but I jus found it recently and its been really helpful. One thing that could help future viewers out is if you set a chapter for the texture creation tutorial at the end so ppl can skip there easily without having to search it. Thanks again!
Thanks legend. It was refreshing to see a RUclips video that actually had useful info about this complex software. Initially the 40 minute length was a bit daunting (using that term very loosely) but a it was useful the whole way through. Cheers for learning and sharing. BTW the camera was fine for 95% of the tutorial, it covered the material panel for a few moments but no biggy. Was kinda funny to watch you dance you face out of the way :P
Wow! This is a really nice tutorial. Everything is explained perfectly. It really helped me a lot. Keep making these videos. You are really awesome BTW! Please move the webcam to the right corner in future videos & increase the video quality
This tutorial was absolutely fantastic! Thank you so much for this. The only difference I found was with the last step concerning the camera depth fade I had to flip the landscape coordinates... Strange one. I really hope to see more tutorials from you. I was never left in the dark wondering how you did something at all!
Great tutorial! I am glad that you mentioned the target layers issue.Somehow even your method didn't solve the problem for me.I had to reset the landscape material to default and then assigned landscape automaterial and then instance material. Thanks again.
This is exactly what i was looking for. Thanks a lots. Loved how to made both Procedural and painting method. Became of the fan of this method. Thanks to you. :)
Also a beginner. I found this video 2 days ago. As others have pointed out. Fun to watch, full of information. Easy to understand steps. This is what I liked the most: In other videos, the creator either made their automated material (functions, attributes, parameters, foliage brushes etc) before filming, or they assume the veiwer already knows this. - I do not match either category. Also, this is exactly what I was looking for, how to make landscape material adhere to and follow the existing heightmap data. Using the same concept, is there any way to make river systems automatically generate based on height map data? If there is already an existing video that shows this, please let me know
Ya this has helped me so much. Since you have made this I have seen some amazing auto materials that people have made that are on some next level quality. An updated video would be greatly appreciated if you have learned anything new in regards to automaterials. TYTY !
In the epic launcher, go to the learn tab, scroll down to legacy projects and get the "Stylized Rendering" project. And take a look at their auto terrain landscape they have in that project for even more things to do with this.
Keep in mind you can't use auto material for a game unless you don't want different footstep sounds to be determined by landscape layer physics material. I just lost seven days of work due to this fact so I figured I would mention it.
That depends on how you restrict travel. If your game has unlimited exploration then you can but it's complex and requires a bit more experience with materials and blueprints and linetracing. If you restrict your players to paths then just paint the layer with the layer info (which applies the physical material) for the footsteps. Even if the auto material painted the rgass - you can still paint over the grass with the grass layer which will apply the grass physical material.
Just a note (and I am certain someone else has covered this already) but you can get a great grass/foliage set for free from the Unreal marketplace. Look for the Open World Demo.
A really helpful tutorial was exactly what i was looking for. was wondering how you would go about combining the camera depth fade with the master material and have it work with with the layer blends?
If you're wanting to use the camera depth fade to hide texture tiling on your own textures, just build them in a material function and plug them in just like the ones that we took from the starter content. It then should function the exact same way but then you can change the distance of when you want the tiling scale by adjusted the camera depth fade amount.
Thank you so much for your time and effort, that tut has helped me so much, im finally getting landscapes that look real for a change.... Defo had to subscribe ;)
Amazing thanks. 2 questions : 1=> why did you use the "Explicit Normal" and not the Alpha ? 2=> What if you want to blend a fourth element ? With how many LinearInterpolation will we be dealing with ??
I used explicit normal because it blends in a way that uses the height information from the normal map, giving changes in the crevasses making it look more natural. And for adding more elements I recommend downloading the free resources file in the description, there I have set up extra layers so you can see what it would look like.
If anyone is tired of seeing warnings to rebuild lighting, just click on your Light Source Actor, and change mobility to "Movable" on the right side in Details panel.
Thank you so much for all the time it took to make this. It's a game changer. You managed to convert 3 or 4 tutorials into 1. We learned how to make a generated mat, a paint-able mat, AND although we cheated by copying, how to make the landscape not tile like a quilt. Also, in version 4.26.2 that bug at 24:00 still exists. You have to plug in the master material to get the parameters to show up. No idea why, then you can go back to the material instance. Thanks again Noah, it was helpful and funny. (Too many tubers are so serious). Question please? What's the difference between Grass1 and Grass2? Should they both have the same settings and the same static meshes? When I changed the chair to a megascans grass, the chair went away even though it was still present in the grass2? This got me thinking... Is it the paint-able layer? No! Then what's it for?
Dear friend, this was very useful. I will start experimenting with megascan assets and such and let's see what we can do...thank you very much for this
If anyone is having issues with the tutorial, I will be posting the working resource file in the description for you to download.
