  • Mizuno STZ220 Driver Forgiveness Review: Finally the change in direction I've been wanting.... All manufacturers have been insistent for years on the ever pointless search for more and more yards, more ball speed, where Driver faces have been governed for years. Mizuno have been the first to have chosen to go the way of Ping in their head weights and focus on sheer forgiveness since they have reached the limits with ball speed.
    Could this change in direction mean finally for Mizuno they could have a tangible option for every amateur golfer?

    I honestly can’t say which I’m more impressed with: the Mizuno’s forgiveness or Jay’s ability to maintain almost perfect path and face to path while deliberately hitting it all over the face 😲

      Hi Lindsay, all I can say is it has taken quite a while to learn how to do. Generally during intentional miss hitting certain patterns arise like toe hits and over closed face or heel strikes and face open are common. Learning to miss hit with normal delivery characteristics is something that I had to spend a while learning to be able to give usable data for you guys to gleam how a club works when accidentally and not intentionally miss hit 👍
      I guess this is the reason why I believe I'm the only one on RUclips that gives and delivers this type of testing...... 🤷
      Thanks very much for the kind feedback 👍

    I have the ST200 Driver and 3 Wood. I ended up upgrading both to the STZ220 Driver and STZ 3 wood. Mainly based on yours and other test/reviews. For the benefit of fellow viewers. Both of Jay's reviews were spot on...period. No exaggeration, no personal nuances or preferences to be weighed, he was just flat out spot on. Best money I ever spent and I say Mizuno owes you a kickback! Great job!👌

    Awesome video Jay. I am a +4 golfer and struggled with the former ST-Z model as it seemed to have a pull tendency (left as I am right handed). I put the ST-Z 220 in play two rounds ago and I can 100% honestly say this is a straight hitting monster. I did not notice a drop in distance - I would actually argue that I hit it longer as I am not as afraid of mishits as I was before and can let go a bit. In three rounds I missed 3 fairways - one left side, one right side and one too long. Even as a +4 I do not hit every shot perfectly. But golf is a game of how bad your misses are and I can honestly say this driver is every bit as straight as my other driver - Ping G425 LST. I like the look of the Mizuno better as well as the sound. I’ll be gaming this driver for sure in ‘22. Nicely done Mizuno. I believe with the fast follow to last years release Mizuno knew there was a weighting system in the former head that just didn’t work as efficiently as it could and they got after it quickly. Mizuno, you really got it right with this one. Do yourself a favor people, give this a try. Remember, more often in golf, it’s not how good your good shots are it’s how bad your bad shots are. This driver will definitely save most golfers some strokes on the card.

Previous handicap of between 5 and 2 with typically high swing speeds / distance…I’m 6ft 6in. Seriously considering this driver, would never have considered a Mizuno driver in the past…Irons yes, my 20 year old MP30’s are going to get an upgrade too (probably 223’s or T100S)…that graphic of fairway hits was mad, serious grouping! You are just so far away..... 8 hour round trip ouch. Bearwood may well be my sensible option. Keep up the good work mate, I love playing Mizuno, have done for 30 years, can't really see that changing, I do like the non shouty brands and if I were o deviate it would be Ping.

      It's well worth insuring when you are spending hard earned money that you are fitted absolutely right. I'd agree that it's a bit far for just a driver fit. I have someone coming from Wales tomorrow for an iron fitting and that's much more justifiable. Generally for subscribers and especially if they are coming a long way, a few hour session is always good to get what the object of the visit done and then to have a look at the overall swing to identify areas of quick easy improvements that have the largest shot reducing potential 👍

    Ping takes a year off from upgrading their 425 while Callaway and Mizuno make clones of the 425 that sound better. I think you can get Callaway length numbers from the Mizuno if you go with a longer than 45" spec shaft that Mizuno uses and go with 45.75" that Callaway specs - and on this note, Mizuno is offering as a no upcharge, the Hzrdus Smoke Blue PVD-version (which is slightly counter-balanced), so it would make a good shaft to order slightly longer if you desire the last few yards of carry.

    Confirms what I've been thinking for the last couple of years, distance has been maxed out for about 10 yrs due to COR restrictions. They can now only improve forgiveness and spin. I usually try the latest gear when it comes out and I typically don't see any improvement in distance - but forgiveness has been improving (anywhere on the face is the sweet spot now). Curiously I rented a set of Lynx clubs 30 years ago that were Beta ti face. Improvements in shafts (and balls) are as important, lighter performance shafts create faster club speeds. Used to have Mizuno clubs and will try this one out.

      Be straighter definitely from those off centre strikes, although if you got the 190 properly custom fit for your delivery then they may not be any real distance gains from your good strikes, but average distances may increase due to the added forgiveness of the 220Z.

    Totally agree on the opinion that most driver manufacturers are chasing every last mm of distance, often at the cost of accuracy. They rely on the top 3% of players impressing us enough to convince us to purchase exactly what they use. That's marketing. But, as a very average player, I have always been far happier to drive 4 or 5 or even 10m less than my mates, but hit the fairway 90% of the time, while they are searching for their ball in the long rough. I'm sure there are many others who feel the same. Excellent review, backed up with heaps of factual data. Thankyou.

      Definitely more forgiving than the G. But the G would be potentially longer in the faster swinging sector of golfers that have speed related spin issues. I guess all depends on which part of the game you need go focus on and even if you are the type that needs the G's characteristics to start with. The X and G golfers will definitely make up the minority with the Z covering the majority 👍

I'm a pretty consistent striker (4 HCP), not an especially long hitter (100mph SS), and if anything my tendency is to present a little too much loft at impact and hit it high. The Mizuno is $200 cheaper for me to order. Should I toss a coin? Help! 😅

    • @AskGolfNut

      Hi there, I would always say to be professionally custom fitted and especially at 4hcp you have very few shots to pay with to make a mistake on your driver setup.
      My suggestion would be to have a session with a good trustworthy knowledgeable person that can distinctly show you which one and more importantly why one would be better than the other for you.
      The Rogue LS is the low spin model where the STZ220 is more the mid spin model so technically is not like for like heads for comparison. Go somewhere that knows their stuff to explain and demonstrate why one will be better than the other 👍

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  2 года назад +3

      Definitely, the forgiveness testing is all about attempting to put a normal swing but purposefully miss hit it. That way you can test to see when the average golfer puts their normal swing on it (which is actually more consistent than they believe) and miss hits the face (which is one of the biggest causes of poor shots), they then can see if a club might work for them.
      Each golfer has their own flight tendencies, which ever curvature that is, and striking different parts of the face can cause huge changes in that curvature depending on the club in question. So having a driver with more forgiveness and stable gear effect can really help the average golfer 👍

    These heads must work well with the Hazrdus shafts like you used. But one of the stock shafts they come with is the Aldila Ascent Red. The tester at 2nd Swing Golf mentioned that and had that shaft on the counter along with another stock offering. The Ascent goes all the way up to 87 gram TX flex so it is not just some kind of ultralight shaft for seniors. But the tester at 2nd Swing did not use it, and nobody, and I mean nobody among the at least 20 testers like you that I follow has ever tested them with the Ascent Red shaft. Its always with another. I can't even find a review of the Ascent shaft. I had a chance to buy an STX 10.5 demo, virtually unhit, from the PGA Superstore where I am a member for just $99. It has the Ascent Red 50 regular flex shaft. The results I got were underwhelming and I decided not to buy it. I think I would have done better with the STZ as I prefer a neutral setup, but unfortunately they did not have a demo of that model on sale.

    I’m so bad I couldn’t bring the spin down I was out to in and couldn’t put it out past 220 with 90 mph swing and smash factor 1.4ish so no matter how good the club is if I don’t fix my swing it doesn’t matter where on the face and it doesn’t matter what club or shaft or lie angle…frustrating as hell gotta fix my swing first

  • @b8353
    @b8353 2 года назад

    Hi, enjoyed watching your mizuno st driver reviews as I’m thinking of getting a new driver. Which would you recommend for someone with a lower swing speed, who swings more in to out and generally misses on the heel side, stx or stz? Cheers…

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  2 года назад +1

      A heel strike with an in to out path would straighten out your shots, although quite inefficient due to using an off centre hit to manage curvature. It's a difficult one go answer as there is a potential swing improvement to make which would make you potentially longer off the tee with the sand effort and might change the requirements of the head. But, in general the Z will suit more golfers than the X so on balance I would go the Z for yourself. But also look to neutralise your path and strike a bit to make even better use of a new purchase 👍
      Thanks for the comment and for watching.

    • @b8353
      @b8353 2 года назад +1

      @@AskGolfNut thank you for the quick reply. I was thinking of the stx as I tend to leave the face slightly open. My usual ball flight is a fade/straight and slice/fade as it descends.

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  2 года назад

      That'll be due to the heel strike, with an inside path the natural flight should be a slight draw but the heel strike is overriding the ball spin axis. I would also look at shaft length to see if a slightly shorter shaft would have the effect of moving the strike point more neutral, thus removing the fade spin axis 👍

    How does this compare to the STG, especially if you put both weights in the back of the STG?

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  2 года назад +5

      Moi weighting in the G version is good but can't compare to the Z due to all the weights from the physical tracks themselves. Those compromise the potential Moi for adjustability. Basically the G is for the higher speed golfer looking go control spin and dial in flight. The X is for the heavy faders out there and the Z is for the mainstream golfer looking for forgiveness 👍
