  • This is an audio debate I participated in on Unbelievable? with Justin Brierley, an award-winning radio show in England. I debated "sex worker" Charlotte Rose & dude who's against censorship (probably not his official title), Adam Scarborough.

I'm 19 and Matt is absolutely right. Porn has destroyed me when i watched it, i had a hard time feeling happy, i was anxious, awkward, shallow, and saw women as little more than sexual objects. I havent watched porn in over a year and i feel much better now

Glad you managed to kick it so early in your life. I first saw porn when I was 13 and didn't stop until I was 32 (oddly enough only a month before I started converting to Catholicism). It most certainly skewed how I viewed sex and I still fight with that to this day and it's amazing how much I didn't even realize it until being able to look back (much in the same way I didn't realize how much pot addiction affected me until after quitting it). Please pray for God to continue healing me from this.

Yeah because it has a good constituent part and a bad constituent part. A big part of the argument against pornography is that it reduces sex to a purely physical and agressive act. @@spacedoohicky People start watching porn at 9-12 now, children don't have agency. So your question can't even be answered because the addiction is started as a young child (which is the goal of the pornographer).

This is where the analogy with alcohol works. Parents take measures to keep their kids from drinking alcohol. They should do the same for porn. And yes kids can obtain alcohol even though they can't purchase it legally.
Although porn addiction has basically been debunked. So there's that too. Search for "is porn addiction real" on google to see what I mean. And look up the DSM. The latest DSM does not list porn addiction as an affliction.

A whole generation got addicted to porn that means this isn't a one off issue but a societal problem, it's bigger than "keep one computer in the living room".
The making and distribution (free streaming or sale) of porn should be made illegal.
Imagine not thinking porn is addicting when people start watching it at 10-12 and you get a dopamine rush from it just because a book that "experts" made didn't include porn as something addictive when it clearly is.

    • @spacedoohicky

@@newmei9 I was talking about kids, and it's just as easy for parents to keep their kids from finding porn as it is to keep them from obtaining alcohol. Parents that can't do that are just bad parents.
And no. Porn is not a disgusting poison. You just think it is because you've been trained to. That's not to say someone can't have a problem with porn, just like a person can have a problem with alcohol. But saying "disgusting poison", and "whole generation" is exaggerating. You're going off the deep end.
Playing, and watching sports gives a dopamine rush. Actual sex gives a dopamine rush. Getting praised at work gives a dopamine rush. What's the point of pointing out a dopamine rush?

And if porn OR sex is “just a desire for genital friction” or viewing a “slab of meat,” then that person clearly has an addiction. And, finally, if you don’t realize how much consensual, loving, nourishing, partnered sex - without any porn influence - has “a degrading aspect to it,” then you haven’t delved very deep into the human psyche. “Degrading” sex, done well, has a profoundly transformative and healing effect. QUESTIONS FOR THE DEBATE: Firstly, it really confuses me that in a society where a seemingly man-hating wave of feminism prevails, we would support an industry that encourages people to objectify females. Isn't that the very thing we are working against? To not be seen as mere sources of pleasure? To be seen as more than our bodies? To KNOW that we are not just what our bodies have to offer? This paradox baffles me deeply. Another conflict that I see is that we are creatures of habit, a statement that seems to be largely agreed upon. Yet here, we argue that we can receive sexual input from others, in the form of watching porn, without giving a whop about their needs, desires, and wants and think that this does not impact the rest of our world? We are literally training our minds to look at others as a means to an end... and this is ok? Yet when this happens to us, at work, for instance, we are infuriated. Thirdly, we are both body and mind, and no matter how hard we try to ignore this, what we do mentally impacts us physically and vice versa. The act of intercourse releases bonding hormones in us and we behave in a way that ignores this. This makes no sense to me! What I can agree with is to stop shaming people. Brene Brown's research gives us tons of reasons why shame is a no-go. Shame keeps people trapped in the darkest of places, and so that is not something I support. However, the antidote to shame isn't being shameless in the sense that 'what I do doesn't have any consequences and so I do whatever I want'. That mindset is one of ignorance at its best and deep denial at its worst. Fourth, there is a trend for eco-friendly shopping, meaning that we want to purchase from retailers where products are ethically-sourced and everyone involved is treated fairly. This also means that we don't associate ourselves with companies that are harming the environment, animals, and people. And yet, despite the fact that child pornography, sex trafficking, and female-abuse are all part of the industry we are still supporting it? Guys! We are not making sense! * Also, MATT, I so deeply appreciate your approach to discussing issues, specifically when it's in conversation or through a non-religious lens. Some comments of yours, in the past, have really thrown me off for very specific reasons, as they seemed to minimize really painful actions, but I really respect your curiosity, as this is exactly how I learn and commit to ideas as well - discussion, seeing all sides, pondering, questioning, and look at the secular approach.

Search on "The Russian Effort to Abolish Marriage" in the July 1926 issue of the Atlantic online to see how far back this Marxist subversion of sexuality goes.
Most insane modern ideologies are offshoots of Marxism. Marxists seek to tear down societies by undermining morality, families and institutions, so that these societies can be rebuilt as Marxist utopias. Yes, it's insane, but it's what they believe. If you can convince people that a man who calls himself a woman should be called a woman, then you can convince people of anything. By overturning the most obvious truths, people come to believe that there is no truth. And then they can be conditioned to follow the prevailing ideology like Pavlov's dogs, or just manipulated by emotion.

People drink alcohol I was addicted to alcohol, should alcohol be banned? Tv is addictive, Reading can be addictive, sleeping, work, literal 90% of everything we do is addictive so the addiction argument doesn’t work. If you then say there’s no benefit to porn, there’s no benefit to alcohol either.
If your argument is a kid could see it 1. That’s your problem as the parents 2. Do you really want the government telling you what is best for your kids.

The argument against the libertarian is to argue about negative externalities. Porn is addictive and has negative effects on people. The negative effects on the masses of people have negative effects on others. I may not use porn, but I'm hurt by a society that does use porn. This affects my civil liberties and the libertarians find themselves with a problem. It is answerable, but it's difficult for the libertarians to answer it without sounding crazy.

I think Charlotte, in bringing up studies that contradict some of the studies Matt has brought up is failing to recognize that just because some people may not be all that adversely affected by porn, doesn't mean it isn't something that is at least potentially harmful. The better question would be about the general ratio between the two. Most people feel energized and awake after drinking a caffeinated beverage...but some few, such as myself, do not. That doesn't mean definite caffeine isn't a stimulant, it means there's something peculiar about some of us such that it affects is differently. If there are millions of people being negatively affected by porn, it doesn't matter that some studies show that some people aren't, because those millions are still negatively affected.

Regarding the wine studies that Charlotte mentions, she didn't go into any details about the studies to give us any idea of the merits. Also, as far as I know regarding wine and cancer, it has to do with wines ability to reduce free radicals. And I think, if I recall correctly, there is a point at which anti-oxidants become harmful rather than helpful, or certain conditions for that to change, which would correlate to wine being beneficial in one instance, and harmful in another. Also, it's the antioxidants, not the alcohol that's helpful, so grape juice is just as beneficial or harmful on that note, but without the added harm alcohol can bring.

I had a life-long struggle with lust. I figured that it was just a male thing and there was nothing I could do about it. But I found healing through confession. Confession confers grace. Few Catholics are aware of that. I typically go to confession twice a year, but I got a job near a church and was able to easily go to confession frequently. After the third time going to confession in 9 weeks, confessing lust, I was free of lust. I couldn't believe it. And I've been free for two years now.

    • @newmei9

@@thomasaquinas157 Confession changed my life too, I hadn't gone to confession since my confirmation (I'm not kidding). When I came back to the Church in my late 20's I now really wanted to follow God, I even made a list of all my sins for confession. When I was naming each sin to the priest I began to realize how much I had failed, I felt such shame I cried for the first time in over 10 years.
The priest was very kind and assured me that my sins will be forgiven.
After this confession I had never been so happy or felt so clean. That confession changed my life, I think it was Fr. Mike Schmitz who said "the confessional is a place of victory" and that is exactly how I felt, free and victorious.

I love how Charlotte went off about norms. Norms day nothing about what's good or bad for us. There can be a lot of very normal behavior that humans participate in that is detrimental to their health. Take smoking for example. It had been very normal for millions of people to smoke, but it's still bad for them. I also think she got a bit carried away with the abuse tirade. For one, many people hide any abuse they've suffered from the people they know. There are people who don't realize they have been abused. There are types of abuse that we don't topically recognize as abuse in our lives. So, it's hard to say Matt was definitely wrong. Maybe he is, maybe he's not, but first you have to consider how much we actually know about abuse and the situation to judge. Truthfully, there's a lot of assumptions that people in the porn industry may bee making about why they are in the industry and how much they really like it.

  • @adamshepard3146
    @adamshepard3146 10 дней назад

Matt, your research was fantastic and I completely agree with the research that has been done in porn being an addiction. I know people who go through legitimate withdrawals, like someone trying to quit smoking, drinking, or coffee when they go short times without porn. I also agree with what Adam said on the grounds that screen time is addictive, look at everything floating around on FB, X, Instagram, even here on RUclips. Porn goes beyond the screen though and if folks can't access a screen they can go get a magazine or to the strip club then they still get their porn fix.
Because it is so readily available I have seen porn destroy people's relationships between family and friends because they get so dependent on it. This dependency is often never intended. It starts off in the "I can stop when/if I want to" frame of mind and often goes too far unintentionally. The unintentional nature is often seen in a hindsight situation, as in "how did I get in this deep."
This is based off of what I have seen and I realize that people handle addictive habits differently.
Overall this was a good debate. I enjoyed how all sides were willing to hear the other (which is rare in "debates" anymore) and it was moderated very well.

I'm watching this a bit late...but feel the people chosen for the 'debate' were a little closed-minded in their thinking. Scarborough's only interest was to stop censorship, and Rose's position was to justify her occupation. Both agreed that education was important--yet it seemed that they felt that porn was appropriate education for children. Both stated that there were many studies to prove your studies wrong...yet were unable to come up with exact references. In fact, given time to google, Rose didn't come up with a study to back her position...and used opposing studies concerning the connection of drinking wine and cancer, instead. If there are all these supposedly opposing studies...why couldn't she find one? Of course, I think Scarborough picked up on this, and responded that there aren't studies because they are not necessary (porn isn't a problem for the majority of people).
I have to say, you were the one with the logical/reasonable argument here...without any real opposition.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:42 🎙️ Matt Fradd participated in a radio debate on pornography, sharing insights from his book "The Porn Myth."
01:51 🌐 Before discussing government regulation, the debate first needs to establish whether pornography is harmful to individuals, relationships, and society.
03:12 📚 Matt Fradd promotes his book as a non-religious response to pro-porn arguments, with all royalties supporting sexually trafficked victims.
05:12 🔄 Matt Fradd discusses his personal journey with pornography, emphasizing its negative impact on creativity and relationships.
07:32 📊 Matt Fradd acknowledges that religious people use pornography but emphasizes the need for education on itspotential harm.
09:13 🚫 The Campaign Against Censorship argues for the right of consenting adults to access and view content without state interference.
14:21 🔄 Charlotte Rose highlights the importance of education on sexual expression beyond procreation to offer choices beyond pornography.
17:38 📊 Matt Fradd presents neuroscience-based studies supporting the addiction model, linking pornography use to negative effects such as erectile dysfunction and warped sexual tastes.
20:13 🧠 Neuroscientifically, compulsive pornography consumption can lead to dopamine downgrading, affecting the brain's reward center and potentially causing desensitization.
21:25 🧠 Matt argues that the science indicates pornography has an addictive effect, making it harder for people to have normal sexual relations.
22:08 🚫 Matt does not advocate for a blanket ban on pornography but emphasizes the importance of educating people about potential detrimental effects before engaging in such behavior.
24:15 💑 Matt contends that studies show even moderate use of vanilla porn can lead to negative perceptions of partners' affection, physical appearance, and sexual performance.
25:11 🌐 Charlotte highlights the need for society to understand the distinction between the reality and fantasy aspects of sex, with fantasy being readily accessible online.
27:01 🎓 Charlotte suggests providing more information to young people about the reality and fantasy of sex, allowing them to make informed decisions rather than advocating for censorship.
29:21 🤔 Matt discusses the potential immorality of pornography and argues that people have a right to know about its effects, especially if it may be detrimental to relationships.
32:24 🚨 Charlotte disagrees with Matt's generalization that porn performers have all been abused and emphasizes the diverse reasons individuals choose to work in the industry.
34:17 📊 Matt references studies claiming a high percentage of porn stars have herpes, adding a health perspective to the discussion.
36:09 👥 Matt argues that even if not all performers have experienced abuse, treating a woman who may have forgotten her dignity with dignity is a positive approach.
39:37 🔄 Adam suggests that sex is a natural need, and for many, pornography serves as an outlet for sexual desires and urges.
41:18 📚 Charlotte questions the scale and gender representation of studies, emphasizing the need for more education to provide alternatives to the predominant hardcore genre.
42:20 🧠 Porn addiction and its impact on sexual dysfunction: The speaker, a sexual trainer, argues that in her experience of working with over 1200 people dealing with erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation, only a small percentage were affected by porn addiction. She suggests that psychological factors, not just pornography, contribute to sexual issues.
43:43 🔄 Escalation of sexual desires: Matt Fradd claims that a study from nofap showed that nearly 60% of surveyed individuals reported an increase in deviant sexual desires due to exposure to porn. He argues that over time, individuals may seek more extreme and taboo content to maintain arousal.
44:26 🍔 Porn as sexual junk food: Matt Fradd likens pornography tosexual junk food, suggesting that people may find it challenging to imagine a healthy sexual life without it. He encourages a perspective shift, highlighting the benefits of quitting porn and leading a more fulfilling life.
45:08 🔄 Slippery slope argument: Matt Fradd argues that exposure to pornography can lead to a slippery slope where individuals may escalate to more shocking content over time. He contends that shock and anxiety boost dopamine levels, potentially driving individuals to seek increasingly extreme material.
46:47 📚 Openness to evidence: Charlotte Rose expresses openness to evidence and education, emphasizing the importance of providing information for individuals to make their own decisions about pornography. She acknowledges the existence of studies supporting both perspectives and advocates for informed choices.
49:37 📊 Reference to studies: Matt Fradd defends his position by referencing numerous studies, including 33 neuroscience-based studies, a 2014 Cambridge study, and a 2015 peer-reviewed research study. He argues that the preponderance of evidence supports the idea that pornography can lead to addiction and negative consequences.
54:24 🔄 Science and changing perspectives: Charlotte Rose highlights the ever-changing nature of scientific studies, drawing an analogy with conflicting studies on the health effects of wine. She emphasizes the need for education presenting both sides, allowing individuals to make their own informed choices.
56:17 💰 Royalties for a cause: Matt Fradd reveals that 100% of the royalties from his book go to supporting sexually trafficked women in San Diego. He encourages people to read the book and decide for themselves based on the evidence presented.
58:52 🔄 Historical perspective on pornography: Adam Scarborough brings up the historical prevalence of pornography, mentioning its existence in Roman villas. He suggests that the issues associated with pornography are not new and questions the validity of fighting against its widespread use.
59:47 🚬 Analogy with smoking: Matt Fradd counters the argument about the historical prevalence of pornography by comparing it to smoking. He asserts that historical practices may not necessarily be moral or beneficial and stresses the importance of following scientific evidence.

Yes porn can be addictive but so can almost anything that hits your dopamine levels, should we ban everything that gives a dopamine high?

Interesting, but I think most of us want to live in a free society within ethical and moral guidelines. The problem, however, is that we are poorly evolved, shortsighted apes....especially through our formative years that often make bad decisions for ourselves because our spontaneity blinds us of possible long-term consequences.
I'm an atheist, but I see little wrong with Matt highlighting potential pitfalls of watching and especially participating in porn. However, since I am an atheist, when he starts citing sin and immorality, he's likely going to lose me, since the bases of these terms are something that I highly doubt exists.
