can we get proper John Williams Bio. From his early days working in jazz band to working on TV music to His breakout score with Superman, Jaws, Star Wars.... I mean this man is still writing music today and would love to know how he truly came to be. 7 min is not enough for a legacy of work.

It's amazing how a man started from a simple jazzman to writing complex memorable film scores such as E.T., Superman, Star Wars, etc!

    • @colleencupido5125
      @colleencupido5125 3 года назад +3

"Simple jazzman"? Obviously, you don't know much about Jazz. But you are not alone. John Williams' good friend, Andre Previn, who worked in Hollywood at age 16 orchestrating scores- only to leave after several decades and multiple Oscars to become a highly respected Conductor of classical music. Previn loved Jazz all his life and he knew it took time and effort to be any good at it. One anecdote of his describes an "unnamed famous Classical conductor" who reportedly said he was going to take the summer off and try Jazz for the summer- a remark that disgusted Andre Previn, knowing firsthand how much work is involved in Jazz
PS: And for "complicated scores" you can't get much more note-heavy scores that Rachmaninoff. Yet I believe Previn's greatest success came with his conducting Rachmaninoff ( I saw him conduct Rachmaninoff's Symphony #2 in person in SF Davies Symphony Hall in the early 1990s)

+Anna Ferrara Yes, Joseph Williams, Son of John is the main singer actually of Toto. he Did two albums with them and one tour in the end of 80's, and he's now back on stage with them since several years.
Joseph also composed sometimes tunes with his father as he's a film composer himself too.
for example, he's the one who co-wrote and wrote the lyrics of the Ewoks Song in the original version of Return of the Jedi, out in 1983 (today, this tune has been replaced unfortunatly by something else for the 1997 Star Wars Special Edition).

Yes, that's not the only jazz Piece he composed and put in films, lot of influence of Dave grusin in some of them, like on "Banning Back Home" (Hook), or Jazz Autograph (The Terminal). most of his themes are completly written like it was a jazz piece / Standard, like Theme From Sabrina (the First part), Schindler's List Theme, My Friend The Brachiosaurus (Jurassic Park) and many other tunes ! There is a terry trotter recording, who did a very beautiful Jazz recording arrangement on some of SW themes, called Sketches on Star Wars . www.amazon.com/Sketches-Star-Wars-Trotter-Trio/dp/B00000150S

Whoever posted this should know I would have been willing to pay pretty decent money for this- I just never knew it existed. The more playful side of this mammothly talented composer was a joy to watch. My dad was a Big fan.of Arthur Fielder- that's how I first knew the Pops existed. And John Williams' buddy Andre Previn- another music man who wore so many hats- also wrote the funniest book on music I have ever read, called "No Minor Chords" about his family's escape.from Nazi Germany; how he learned the English language- he went to the movies as a young kid; And his years working in Hollywood are extremely funny. One example: He got a job as a very young man.playing the piano live for theaters that still showed Silent Films. It was customary to have a live musician play while the film.was running. He thought that day's movie was Jazz oriented, so he was in the middle of playing The Charleston on the keyboard when the manger came almost running down the aisle. The movie screen was at the time showing The Last Supper. Scratch one job. Seriously, the only contender for all-time funniest writer who is also a musician is composer Hector Berlioz' autobiography. It's non-stop laughter, including when Berlioz' dresses up as a lady's maid in a plot to do away with what was his fiance and her lover. This is early 1800s.

Hi, thank you for your comment. i'm the one who posted this, in fact i posted these videos because of the reason you tell, so nobody would have to pay to see all the documents about williams.
All the videos I posted about him are stuff i acquired sometimes by doing bad trading (that mean I paid a lot to have them), some others I recorded them myself on Tv a long time ago, and some where because some nice people gave them to me.
it was much worst in the community of Vangelis, where the rare recording where sold at a very high price. that's why i posted them all.
I still have one interview of williams and andre previn + the full interview they did with previn, miklos Rozka and williams for the BBC (i only posted the tunes williams play, but i must put the ones directed by previn and Miklos too), but didn't found the time yet to to do it.

He can take someone's motifs and make them do wonders, but apparently he lacks the creative spark of originality. Pay him to be derivitive, and you'll get your money's worth.

I was wondering how many comments before this appears. Thanks for regurgitating what others told you.

I never understood people like you, there are plenty of examples of amazing original melodies that Williams has written over the years. I don't eternally condemn him for lifting some ideas off of the composers that he is inspired by, if he likes the works of Stravinsky, he's probably going to make music that is in the style of Stravinsky. He used his influences as a basis to further his own experimentation and craft, who doesn't? Many orchestral pieces sound like other orchestral pieces when they are in the same genre. Saying he "heavily" lifts ideas is asinine as beyond the more well-known lifts (Korngold, Holst -- which I think he does justice to), I often see people saying you need to move two melodies down to C Major and change a couple of notes or speed up or slow down something for it to "kind of" sound similar to something else. If you try hard enough, you can claim a lot of music "kind of" sounds similar. I find it funny that certain "musicologists" criticize Williams for this but ignore everyone else. I understand that it's different in the world of copyright laws, but this practice has been in orchestral music almost since its inception. I don't know why instead of enjoying great music the only thing that gets you off is trying to claim that two works sound similar. Just shut up and enjoy the music.

What a load of cliched drivel this 'biography' is. It completely ignores the only decent stuff that JW ever wrote - and it's amazing - and lauds the sentimental blockbuster crap that... (sing along now) 'everyone knows and loves'. Yawn.

I'm very very curious to know what is the "only decent stuff that JW ever Wrote !" ? you pick my curiosity as your statement tell that everything else is not "decent".

You have to understand I'm what you might call a music snob. I am a musician and I have written film scores - for whatever that's worth. I don't much care for JW's scores because they're what I'd call 'shlock'. As far as shlock goes they're as good as it gets but the simplistic emotional appeal doesn't do it for me. The language is designed to augment the action by going 'FEEL THIS NOW'... 'NOW FEEL THIS OTHER THING'. I understand that that's what you've got to do when you're scoring a Hollywood film. He does it so well but I hate how it sounds. And I hate it especially because I know that when he isn't DOING THE JOB he can write the most amazing shit I've ever heard. I'll tell you a little story. Back in about 1974 a friend of mine played me a tape he'd made off the radio of this amazing orchestral piece but he'd missed the beginning so he didn't get the composer's name. For years we tried to find out who wrote it without success. About 5 years ago I realised that, thanks to the internet, it was going to be a lot easier to find out who the composer was so I posted a short section of it on RUclips and offered a $300 reward for anyone who could verify the name of the composer. It didn't take long and... well no surprises as to who it was. The piece was written in about 1968 by Johnny Williams as he was then known and it's called Sinfonietta for Winds. Don't bother trying to find it on RUclips and good luck finding it ... anywhere actually. I found my copy on a Japanese CD website. Anyway, sorry for being so verbose. Over and out.

The issue with musical snob is that they think they know everything, and that the only thing they like is the right one , and everything else is crap. but 'm glad to see that at least you're aware of your illness, they are maybe hope ;).
      for your information here,
      - you're not the only musician posting or did film scores, for whatever that's worth (as you're talking to one too = Me).
      - you lost 300$, the full score sheet music for sinfonietta, i have it since decades !
      - no need to pay 300$ (you have too much money) to find this information, just speaking to john williams fans would have given you the information :
      www.jwfan.com/forums/index.php?/topic/11215-john-williams-sinfonietta-for-wind-ensemble/
      - this small biography is small and don't talk about "everything" because it's part of a show which happen at the boston pops orchestra hall, in presence of Henry Mancini, Christopher reeve and some other musical (or not) celebrities, with Richard Dreyfuss as host.
so you understand that they would have not posted a 2 hours biography in the hall in front of the audience, when the real show is in fact happening on stage and musically !

No I don't think that I know everything and that everyone should like what I like and that everything else is crap. But I still don't like the music that JW writes for films. I don't have an illness, I just know what I like.
