So, you just wrote a GREAT guitar part...

  • It's one thing to come up with a cool part. It's another thing to find the right spots for it in the song, to allow the listener to enjoy it without overdoing it. You want to leave people wanting MORE, not less. Pat's song here is really great. I am not saying that he played some of his parts too many times. There are sections of the song that I think could maybe be a little bit shorter, but really I'm just raising the question: how many times to do play a great part???
It's easy for us to write a part we REALLY like and then play it literally EVERYWHERE in the song. Picking your spots is CRUCIAL. I tend to err on the side of less is more. You definitely don't want your parts, hooks, melodic ideas to overstay their welcome with your listeners.
This really is a great track. Great job, Pat! I am continually impressed by some of the tracks you guys send in. It makes me want to be even better at what I do, knowing there are so many gifted musicians watching the channel. Onward and upward, friends!

GR8 Episode!! Here's MY unsolicited 2 cents. That outro(?)begs for a nice short & tasty lead line. Something memorable...think; Heartbreakers Mike Campbell. I Love the guys voice(not 100% on the harmony. BUT, if I had the cans on I'm sure it would sound good, just like you said they did. I liked Pat’s submission. I always learn a lot listening to the insights the pros such as yourself offer. The comments regarding the formulas and algorithms various media platforms use to determine play time, etc. is fascinating on one hand and frustrating on the other. Sometimes it seems like we are all being ruled by “big brother” and the machines. Maybe that’s why I like live recorded, more raw music that isn’t always perfect yet I know real humans composed and played it. Enough bloviating from me - keep the great content coming!

One thing I noticed is that the motion is really choppy in the video. Probably because the shutter speed is too high on the camera. If the frame rate is 24p you want a 1/50th shutter. You would have to adjust the gain/iso or iris to compensate. Look up the exposure triangle if you are interested. Anyway, love your content and there has been a big bump in video quality recently.

Another excellent video Justin thank you. Pat if you are checking out the comments I want to tell you that I really like the song. It is very cool and something that makes me want to hear more from you. My reaction, not as a pro, but as a listener was similar to Justin's. I thought the break at the end of second chorus hurt the momentum. Also the outro, aside from the push that Justin mentioned, is a bit long. Displacing the snare an 8th on 2 is cool for four bars. I wanted to hear the drums drive 2 and 4 for the next 3 bars. Maybe a hit on 2 and a fill on the 4th bar of each 8 bar phrase. That's just my humble opinion. Hope this is not presumptuous on my part. I never comment on songs but I liked this enough to do so. Thanks for the tune!

Great song! My two cents - thinking about making the song stick in your ears longer- would be to pull the lead vocal up louder in the mix, either by ducking or simply bumping it up. Your vocal quality is pleasant and different from the current style, which is what you want. Adding a stronger female vocal could add some intrigue too. I also feel it needs an instrumental hook to add just a bit more variety (ying-Yang of groove vs unexpectedness): perhaps taking the guitar solo and use part of that in the intro and between verse and chorus. Keep at it! Loving what you’ve done!

    Another good one.
I thought of a video idea that would be cool at least for me. If you have done this, please give a me a clue of what the video might be called and I can find it.
Anyway, sometimes I have more trouble trying to select the correct gear to get a tone that might work with a song I am creating vs creating a part. It is not instinctual for me. I get it if I want a clean sound, start with a Fender or Vox maybe or my Mesa clean but man this can quickly become overwhelming for me. Then there is the effects side. I have always been a cable into the amp guy with some delay and verb in the loop. I have been trying to broaden my horizons which is one of the reason I bought the HXFX I heard you talk about in an old video. It has really opened my eyes, Thanks for that BTW.
Any tips that you can provide that would help guide someone like me to help me at least make sure the first step is at least in the 'right' direction.
I hope that make sense to you. I have a feeling that seasoned vets like you can hear an idea and boom, you know with 90%+ probability what gear will work to make the magic happen.
Also if you have any good anecdotes about an experience where maybe you thought the knew for sure which way to go but the producer or artist thought otherwise, that would be cool to hear if you fell like sharing that is.
    Please keep 'em coming.
    Thanks
    Brian (raised in SW Ohio)

I can only speak for me but I often cut sections in half and am almost always surprised at how often it works great. Verses and/or bridges can really often be cut down. If the melodic idea was strong enough to begin with, you might not have to repeat it, no matter how much you love the part itself. You have to be merciless with yourself, but it can help tighten up the tune. Obviously that doesn't always work, but I always keep it in mind and try it at some point, just to see.

Vox remind me of NRBQ - a great compliment.

@@JustinOstrander I just put two and two together. Have you ever worked with Big Al Anderson (from NRBQ)? He's in Nashville writing and picking I think.

Good song, just needs some trimming of the fat here and there. Bonus points for the cold intro. Outro sounds a little weird compared to the rest of the song IMHO.

Cool tune....but I think it could benefit from some arrangement, felt like it hit its peak and then flatlined. A few of the sections went on a bit too long for my taste IMHO. I would also prefer a more dynamic solo section to elevate the song. I like how you allow your subscribers to send in their songs for analysis. Thanks for your content, I really enjoy and have learned a lot from your channel.
