So, you just wrote a GREAT guitar part...

- It's one thing to come up with a cool part. It's another thing to find the right spots for it in the song, to allow the listener to enjoy it without overdoing it. You want to leave people wanting MORE, not less. Pat's song here is really great. I am not saying that he played some of his parts too many times. There are sections of the song that I think could maybe be a little bit shorter, but really I'm just raising the question: how many times to do play a great part???
It's easy for us to write a part we REALLY like and then play it literally EVERYWHERE in the song. Picking your spots is CRUCIAL. I tend to err on the side of less is more. You definitely don't want your parts, hooks, melodic ideas to overstay their welcome with your listeners.
This really is a great track. Great job, Pat! I am continually impressed by some of the tracks you guys send in. It makes me want to be even better at what I do, knowing there are so many gifted musicians watching the channel. Onward and upward, friends!

Dude, I would listen to an album of this vibe. Absolute car cruise tune. Good work Pat.
And as for "guitar is a great hobby because you can get better at it" . . . spoken like someone who used to play golf. I feel it.
Ha!!
Thank you kindly! Still play golf. Keep thinking I’m going to wake up one day and be scratch, but unlike music, it is very easy to make myself worse at golf. Plateaued at best. Thanks again! Pat
"when the student is ready, the teacher appears" Justin, I really get a lot out of your videos. That was a cool song. Props to Pat.
Thanks for checking it out! Pat
There's a kind of intimacy in your video that seems to match your personality. Something real, authentic. It's cool the time you dedicate to these songs.
Totally agree. Justin seems to be such a great and humble pro. I bet he’d be fun to work with.
Thanks for checking it out Justin, really appreciate it and thanks for the feedback. Is the 'Sitka' on your t-shirt for Sitka, AK? Been there many times, great spot. Thanks again, Pat
It’s really a great track Pat. Catchy and solid mix.
Great stuff, really impressive and a beguiling mix of eras.
The shirt is a hunting outfitter brand. AK is the one state I have yet to visit.
Love how live those drums are!
Cool song Pat. I like the change in the bridge. Justin, this has become my favorite channel. You're insights are awesome.
Thanks a ton!
Catchy and well performed and recorded tune. Absolutely loved your input. Expertise freely given with humility is a pretty special thing, Justin. I’m so enjoying this channel.
Thank you kind sir! Pat
Pretty cool - vocals remind me of Sugar-era Bob Mould
I couldn’t put my finger on it until I read this comment. Totally a compliment to Pat! Good insight Roger!
Sugar and Bob, remember them well! High praise! Thanks, pat
GR8 Episode!! Here's MY unsolicited 2 cents. That outro(?)begs for a nice short & tasty lead line. Something memorable...think; Heartbreakers Mike Campbell. I Love the guys voice(not 100% on the harmony. BUT, if I had the cans on I'm sure it would sound good, just like you said they did. This episode totally inspired me to go back to my own unfinished songs. Maybe one day you will review one of my babies?
Dude you have a great unique voice.
You have some great stuff on your channel, Justin, but I *really* love these song critiques.
Great composition! As a vocalist, the only thing would suggest is... have more confidence in your vocals! The singing is right on, but I couldn't understand a word. I have no idea what the song is about. I love the power and feel of the song, but put your vocals more forward. Great tune, and great comments... rock on!
Thanks for sharing
Awesome song Pat, totally would listen to that on my rotation. Thanks for sharing JO!
These videos are cool Justin....keep 'em coming!!!
I love this format and your way of hosting it Justin. Just a thought regarding “own voice”. Get over it, accept it, and learn to love it. All is just fine and good :-) Great song Pat…
Sound advice, thanks! When people ask me if I can sing I always say I 'vocalize'. Thanks again, Pat
I really liked Pat’s tune. Right in my wheelhouse and to have Justin’s pro input… man! This stuff is priceless and it’s free! Thanks Justin
Thanks! Much appreciated, Pat
GREAT tune!
Great analysis and channel, as well as feedback. I can totally relate to this guy. I'll be tuning in regularly. Thank you for putting out content that can make us all better.
You’ve answered questions I haven’t even asked and it’s great. Great track awesome vibe.
Thanks for doing these videos dude! Love your channel, learning a lot from you! Recently got a Revv D20 to check out because of you and Shawn Tubbs, loving it so far! Keep rocking 🤘🎸
The song reminds me a lot of Badfinger. Yeah, short intros and short songs. Why? Max Martin. Waiting for the "Guitars I bought from Uncle Larry" episode! LOL!
that guitar! cool song, great episode. gratitude
I agree those vocals are very cool. Nice work!
Great song! Great guitar part and vocal melody.
Pat, nice job - your vocal reminds me of Sugar era Bob Mould - really cool.
Justin thanks for another stellar set of comments and advice - reward yourself with a SG!
Cool song! Vocals have a Bob Mould/Husker Du vibe. Really dig it!
Justin, I am late to the party on discovering your channel but better late than never. Your insight is invaluable and on behalf of all us older lovers of music, thank you.
Thanks a ton! And welcome aboard!
Love your show.
Hey, I'm new to your channel and I want to thank you for providing such a valuable resource. I'll be sending you a song soon. Thanks again, Steve
Such great information in your videos.
I really enjoyed it..
Thank you kindly..👍
I liked Pat’s submission. I always learn a lot listening to the insights the pros such as yourself offer. The comments regarding the formulas and algorithms various media platforms use to determine play time, etc. is fascinating on one hand and frustrating on the other. Sometimes it seems like we are all being ruled by “big brother” and the machines. Maybe that’s why I like live recorded, more raw music that isn’t always perfect yet I know real humans composed and played it. Enough bloviating from me - keep the great content coming!
Very cool Pat. Cheers Justin.
Thanks! Pat
Hi Justin. Wow… great track, harmonies and guitar layering. Good stuff, Pat!
Thanks! Pat
Well Done Pat ! Nice work, once again so helpful to listen to these reviews as a hobbyist it’s really helpful to get these bits of explanations and advice. Great idea for video series love it.
Thank you kind sir, Pat
I LOVE TO WATCH JUSTIN SOKE UP THE SONG, OF WHICH MOST ARE QUITE COOL TO LISTEN TO AND HAVE GREAT MOVEMENT AND HARMONY,,,, BUT I AM ABSOLUTELY IN ORE OF WHAT HE DOES WITH THE CHARTING OF THE SONG,, THAT WOULD BE GREAT TO BE ABLE TO BE PROFICIENT AT, UNREAL BEST CHANNEL ON THE TUBE,,,,,,,,
This is a cool tune. The mix of elements work for me. And I'd bet that exactly what he doesn't like about his own vocal sound is the actually its selling point for others. Good work all around.
Much appreciated, Pat
Great song, thanks for sharing. Justin ever thought of re-reviewing some songs after someone takes your thoughts into application?
I was listening while doing something else, and right when you pressed play on the track, an ad came on for something and Megadeth was playing - NOT what I expected, especially after the intro.
I love when you do these type of videos. 100% agree on how to use the Nobels!
Really great tune!
Thanks man! Pat
A true power pop gem ! Well done Pat
Thanks for that! Pat
Very cool song!
Thanks! Pat
Thanks!
Thanks ...Justin you really have helped me with your lessons . God bless.. wishing you success from India 🙂
Cool tune! Reminds me of a outfield song..😁
Great, constructive and humble advice Justin! What a great tune! I only have one suggestion: I would restrict (condence) the vocal harmonies on the verses to a few small phrases. I think the vocals are fantastic and by limiting the harmonies on the verses, the choruses would really shine....just my 2 cents worth. Again, what a great song!
Good recommendation! Thanks for the critical ear, Pat
This song reminds me of mid-90's Pearl Jam albums, like No Code and Yield. Really good stuff!
Yes!!
Thanks! Pat
Cool song. I dig it big time.
Thank you! Pat
5-Stars! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Great song and commentary!
Thanks for checking it out, Pat
Dang I wonder if I know Pat? I am from that area and close in age. Nice work Pat. I liked the vocals as well.
I love that guitar. I knew it was special when Tom played it...and not just because he's a great player. That guitar has the mojo
Well done! I love this series on the channel.
One thing I noticed is that the motion is really choppy in the video. Probably because the shutter speed is too high on the camera. If the frame rate is 24p you want a 1/50th shutter. You would have to adjust the gain/iso or iris to compensate. Look up the exposure triangle if you are interested. Anyway, love your content and there has been a big bump in video quality recently.
What a cool song! Great stuff, Pat.... & very cool critique Justin! My inner mixing nerd noticed that the mix compression is "pumping" maybe just a tad too much. I love the vibe that the pumping effect gives the song, btw but maybe it could be tamed just a bit to the point where it is more subliminal than obvious. Top stuff!
Thanks for checking it out and I agree on the mix. Thanks again, Pat
@@dusty_dustbin_basementjamh4827 I really enjoyed it - Did you play all the instruments too?
@@fytakytemusic I use a guy named Gaetano Nicolosi for drums. He has a website. Great product, very reasonable.
Some good power pop there 👍
Thanks! Pat
I like this review thing
Keep it going
I think you’re onto something
( the old drummer)
Song gave me young Neil Young Crazy Horse tune.
Another excellent video Justin thank you. Pat if you are checking out the comments I want to tell you that I really like the song. It is very cool and something that makes me want to hear more from you. My reaction, not as a pro, but as a listener was similar to Justin's. I thought the break at the end of second chorus hurt the momentum. Also the outro, aside from the push that Justin mentioned, is a bit long. Displacing the snare an 8th on 2 is cool for four bars. I wanted to hear the drums drive 2 and 4 for the next 3 bars. Maybe a hit on 2 and a fill on the 4th bar of each 8 bar phrase. That's just my humble opinion. Hope this is not presumptuous on my part. I never comment on songs but I liked this enough to do so. Thanks for the tune!
Thanks for the feedback kind sir. I checked out your drum videos. You know of what you speak. You have skills! Thanks again, Pat
@@dusty_dustbin_basementjamh4827 thanks Pat! I stopped playing drums after I made those and took up guitar. What an instrument! Still trying to figure it out.
Pat - my favorite song Justin has featured. Good work! I Agree the end needs to be tightened up - maybe with ascending vocal line that ends abruptly?
Wow and thanks! Thanks for checking it out, Pat
Would be interesting to see another final, after critics(in a professional retake), the person took.
Pat! Like the tune. A LOT. Instruments need some separation in the mix. Agree with another commenter who called out the NRBQ vibes. This is a keeper.. keep going man.
Yes, mixing is a challenge. I end up listening to the stuff I record so much as I go, very easy to trick myself into thinking it is 'ok' just because I get so used to how it sounds. Thanks for listening! Pat
Kinda like Eddie Money,Dire straits and Huey Lewis started a band and Pat guided them to write this song.
Great song! My two cents - thinking about making the song stick in your ears longer- would be to pull the lead vocal up louder in the mix, either by ducking or simply bumping it up. Your vocal quality is pleasant and different from the current style, which is what you want. Adding a stronger female vocal could add some intrigue too. I also feel it needs an instrumental hook to add just a bit more variety (ying-Yang of groove vs unexpectedness): perhaps taking the guitar solo and use part of that in the intro and between verse and chorus. Keep at it! Loving what you’ve done!
I must learn about this ducking thing. Big challenge for me to get the vocal to sit 'right' in the mix. Thanks for checking it out and the recommendation, Pat
I wish I had a guitar like that
I like the song. It sounds fresh and original, but it reminds me of so many different bands in brief moments.
Thanks! Pat
Another good one.
I thought of a video idea that would be cool at least for me. If you have done this, please give a me a clue of what the video might be called and I can find it.
Anyway, sometimes I have more trouble trying to select the correct gear to get a tone that might work with a song I am creating vs creating a part. It is not instinctual for me. I get it if I want a clean sound, start with a Fender or Vox maybe or my Mesa clean but man this can quickly become overwhelming for me. Then there is the effects side. I have always been a cable into the amp guy with some delay and verb in the loop. I have been trying to broaden my horizons which is one of the reason I bought the HXFX I heard you talk about in an old video. It has really opened my eyes, Thanks for that BTW.
Any tips that you can provide that would help guide someone like me to help me at least make sure the first step is at least in the 'right' direction.
I hope that make sense to you. I have a feeling that seasoned vets like you can hear an idea and boom, you know with 90%+ probability what gear will work to make the magic happen.
Also if you have any good anecdotes about an experience where maybe you thought the knew for sure which way to go but the producer or artist thought otherwise, that would be cool to hear if you fell like sharing that is.
Please keep 'em coming.
Thanks
Brian (raised in SW Ohio)
Sounds like R Stevie Moore doing Badfinger. Very cool song
I'm ashamed to say I had never heard of R Stevie Moore. Now I know thanks to you. What a legend! Thanks for that, Pat
You guys have so many guitars...do you ever get bogged down with making a choice? I like how early Jack White had one or two cheap guitars and had to make them work. I think those are the best sounds. It's the most creative process to me
I guess at the end of the day, they’re tools in a toolbox. When I need to deliver a specific sound (Tele pickin or thick power rhythms), the tool that does that best is the one I reach for.
Do you ever use compression or eq with your tg2? What lazy j do you play? Great recording tone.
I don’t.
It’s a J20. No onboard verb or trem
I'd add that I wanted to hear the beginning of the song again after the first chorus.
I can only speak for me but I often cut sections in half and am almost always surprised at how often it works great. Verses and/or bridges can really often be cut down. If the melodic idea was strong enough to begin with, you might not have to repeat it, no matter how much you love the part itself. You have to be merciless with yourself, but it can help tighten up the tune. Obviously that doesn't always work, but I always keep it in mind and try it at some point, just to see.
G'day Justin, Question? What type of headphones ya' got?
GK Ultraphones.
Sounds like Steve Miller.
Vox remind me of NRBQ - a great compliment.
LOVE that band. Crazy like a fox!
@@JustinOstrander I just put two and two together. Have you ever worked with Big Al Anderson (from NRBQ)? He's in Nashville writing and picking I think.

Good song, just needs some trimming of the fat here and there. Bonus points for the cold intro. Outro sounds a little weird compared to the rest of the song IMHO.

Hey Justin, I finally managed to send you an email. Hope you like it. All the best!@@JustinOstrander
Cool tune....but I think it could benefit from some arrangement, felt like it hit its peak and then flatlined. A few of the sections went on a bit too long for my taste IMHO. I would also prefer a more dynamic solo section to elevate the song. I like how you allow your subscribers to send in their songs for analysis. Thanks for your content, I really enjoy and have learned a lot from your channel.
