Do you want to get flat cake layers using baking strips? In this video I hand you tested flat cake tips and a simple lemon cake recipe which was baked with baking strips and without baking strips.
I bring you along this video offering you an honest opinion on whether DIY baking strips are better than the Wilton even bake strips.
Cake strips come highly recommended if you'd like a flat layered cake baked well with no dome but what's the cost in time and money for using these baking strips?

LEMON CAKE RECIPE
326G Margarine ( Stork)
450G Caster sugar
275G broken eggs
120mls Freshly squeezed lemon juice
120G Sour cream ( can be replaced with Milk or buttermilk)
2Tablespoonfuls pure Vanilla extract ( Can replace with lemon extract)
475G self raising Flour
1/4 Teaspoon soda bicarbonate
Fresh zest of Four unwaxed lemons

Yeild - Recipe fills 1× 7 inch tin at 4 inch deep
OR 2 x 5 inch PME tins at 4 inch deep
For 2 x 6 inch tins at 4 inch deep make
this recipe + half

TIPS
**Line tins with grease proof paper with extra height as shown in video to accommodate rise.
*** With Baking strips, bake cake at 180°C for 1 hour and 30-45 mins
*** Without Baking strips bake cake at 170°C for 55 mins -1& 10 mins.
** I don't normally use baking strips as I trim my cakes and I don't mind a dome but I highly recommend baking strips if accessible .

Hi you state 275g broken eggs....do you mean eggs out of their shell and mixed together?? can i sub butter? thanks
Hi jibobit, yes the eggs are broken from shell and yes the margarine can be substituted with butter, just ensure the butter is softer and beaten properly.
you state 180c fan but seems a bit high.?
I recommend 170degree Celsius.. ovens temperature and oven types differ from person to person, the recommendation was based on my own experience but you can totally make adjustments to yours. Anything between 165-180 degrees Celsius is ok but 180 is sure on the higher side.
Can I use baking strips with baking rings instead of baking pans?
Hi lovely, thanks for the question.. I'm not sure what you mean.. did you mean can you bake with the baking ring and would use strips with the ring instead of a baking tins? I'm not so sure,as baking rings are not primarily for baking and are hollow at the bottom..however it's not forbidden that they can be adjusted for baking... firstly ensure the ring is oven safe ( made of materials that can withstand heat in the oven) and ensure it's sealed to avoid a leak, other than that I'm sure you can try n see what the outcome is..
