The company I work for is closely connected to one of the largest facilities to manufacture cement in Europe. Cement production consumes insane amounts of energy at a level where the lights flicker whenever they switch the large machines on and off (it strains the local grid's capability to compensate). As it turns out, they generate 60% of their profits by burning trash to produce more than half of the energy onsite (with extensive filtration; they are very clean at it). They basically make a profit before selling anything at all. Since they also sell some of the by-products, the company is producing so cheaply that it's impossible to compete with them on a national level and to an extent even across the borders. The facilities and machines are also so insanely expensive that nobody dares to put up that kind of investment. They are very close to a monopoly and don't rly have much innovation going on as a result.
Cemex. Though they didn't build the thing up from the ground. The basic system for repurposing trash was set up decades ago in a less refined form. The plant itself has seen different owners over time and a number of very costly modernizations took place. It's heavily automated, too. The cement industry itself isn't too profitable overall and even the big players seem to run into financial troubles quite frequently. I wouldn't be surprised, if the facility switches owners again at some point. The people that work there have seen them come and go, but the facility always found a bidder.
When it comes to people who live in one of those massive apartment complexes and condo communities basically nobody recycles anything there's just a few massive dumpsters around the complex where people can dump whatever they want in them and forget about it.
Thank you, Asia, for forcing us in the West to get our own act together! Not denying scale and the massive infrastructural problems in Asia, Africa and South America but we ALL need to step up our moral responsibility! Greetings from a Dane tired of collecting "civilized" people's trash here.
Want a simple, but hard solution to all the plastic trash? Put eco fee's on it, and make stores apply it to the shelf price. People are fairly predictable, and don't change all the much. If a shopper see's the same product in a tin\glass\aluminum package and it's cheaper then plastic, that's what they will buy most of the time. On the topic of disposable bags, reusable bags aren't always the better solution. Most reusable bags need to be used well over 100+ times before they break even. I'm not saying don't use them, just keep in mind how much they need to be used. It's not going to be easy, but we need to use the human condition to our advantage rather then fighting against it. Consumers are going to buy the cheaper product, and that's not going to change.
@Fnord Fnordington way to take it out of context. Yea people spend extra on status symbols, but how many cheap version's are sold for each fancy brand?
Apply the eco fee to the trash when it comes in. Use the fee to is subsidized the recycling of the materials. Of course this fee could also be supplied to the countries that are recycling the stuff they are sending us. If not, the money could go to the countries or places that will do the recycling. Of course, for ethical reasons, the recycling should be policed so that it follows social and environmental standards.
@@stanleytolle416 so long as the fee is part of the listed price on the shelf, because most people don't pay attention to fee's applied at the till. I'm not entirely opposed to plastics as a material, but there's really no need for it in a lot of cases (plastic bottles vs glass\aluminum), and plastics are hard\expensive to recycle, so we should really reduce our usage of it.
Hello from Denmark. We are burning our trash for electricity, heat, and hot water. Since the process produces all of that, we simply use all of that. We are importing trash to keep our burners going. This is a future problem when we no longer produces enough trash. But for the moment we are earning money on trash, converting that into "green energy" because we are that good to recycle then we are left with 0 landfills, and our trash being burned are overall non-recyclables. @@anyanyanyanyanyany3551 it terms of that, we would need to consider firstly the kind of powerplant that it replaces. While I'm not a huge fan of most of China's authoritarian politics, it's still interesting to see how a non-western country that's becoming rich and powerful is approaching the issues of industrialization and globalization. Having a new player coming at these challenges with a different perspective is a cool opportunity for other countries to learn from. They will surely make mistakes, just like all nations - and all humans do, but at least they're trying.

Many politics in China exists to make things a bit smoother for everyone, which makes things more fare and lower the risk of catastrophic disaster. It could feel a bit restricting due to the politics won't always be fare enough, but I personally would consider it quite beneficial that it is the right way to go. China have suffered from rushing and chaotic economy development so making the same mistakes twice isn't desirable. And let's say that, I think the current biggest issue of China is that, it actually got worse reputation among Chinese citizen than outside China. That's not good because it's discouraging people from trying to make China better.
@@HH-xs2gm The main reason China's system works is that it really focuses on infrastructures. This is done in the form of both physical city and transportation infrastructure, and internet service starting from the year 2014 (the "internet+" trend where everyone start making everything offline connected to the internet). It'll be mad for any other country to have cheap domestic delivery within 3 days (1 day if between major cities, same day if using distributed delivery), and unlimited (aka 20~40GB/mo before throttle) 4G network that almost got full coverage for as low as $5/mo. I have a solution (for the plastic all other recyclable are screwed) you manufacture a ton of airtight metal spheres/cubes/cylinders fill them with plastic vacuum seal the plastic filled spheres then heat them causing pyrolysis which will produce new smaller polymers like short-chain hydrocarbons which can be used a carbon-neutral fuel in internal combustion engines or be used to reform long hydrocarbons (i.e plastic). This could also be slightly modified to accommodate cellulose/lignin so fibrous plant waste/paper could be recycled into something other than more paper.

New recycling plants are popping up in America and it's thanks to the Chinese government no longer taking the raw materials that we used to export to them. Instead we are building sorting and recycling facilities here in areas that were hit hard by the decay of American manufacturing, the rust belt namely Maine, West Virginia and Wisconsin. However it is true that there are still quite a few cities sitting on piles of raw material.

What is the name of this wonderful company?
at least its a green monopoly

@Fnord Fnordington he said THE SAME PRODUCT CHEAPER THAN PLASTIC. Not a different product
@Fnord Fnordington How can you miss the point by so much.
@@stanleytolle416 so long as the fee is part of the listed price on the shelf, because most people don't pay attention to fee's applied at the till.

Hello from Denmark. We are burning our trash for electricity, heat, and hot water.
Since the process produces all of that, we simply use all of that.
We are importing trash to keep our burners going. This is a future problem when we no longer produces enough trash. But for the moment we are earning money on trash, converting that into "green energy" because we are that good to recycle then we are left with 0 landfills, and our trash being burned are overall non-recyclables.

but burning trash is pretty toxic don't you think? I mean it is beneficial to burn trash for energy but that compounds the CO2 problem and releases harmful particles to the air.

You don't need to be a fan as long as you don't live there and try to intervene
The Economy Reforms started after the Cultural Revolution saved us. Deng XiaoPing knew what was he doing

It'll be mad for any other country to have cheap domestic delivery within 3 days (1 day if between major cities, same day if using distributed delivery), and unlimited (aka 20~40GB/mo before throttle) 4G network that almost got full coverage for as low as $5/mo. 5:40 Hey, those are the containers from Prague. So that's free ad for "Pražské služby" and "Ekokom", i guess. thanks for the free ad. :)
Damn, trash travels way farther than me..
Can you please cite your sources with in-line video references and a citation list in your video information section please. Excellent work as always
The good environment in the developed countries largely depends on polluting the rest of the world. It is a good change.
Your transitions into your sponsorships are scary good. I don't even realize what you're saying until you say the name of the company.
U.S said " I am superpower, i can controll everything"
China " So what about your trash??"
U.S replied, " That is an exceptional "
Thankyou for producing informative and objective views of china related videos unlike china uncensored...
Sheuno what does China uncensored do? I watched a couple of their videos and the reporter just seemed to hate the ccp.
@@torinfaes6278 exactly the channel belongs to new tang dynasty tv which is funded by falun gong so its definitely not a objective news source if you want to know more about China, its basically a anti china communist channel
Torin Faes as someone who has lived in China ,I can tell you that China uncensored is full of crap.Very biased and been spewing venom of hatred constantly . It seems like the host hates ccp’s gut. However, still enough people who have never paid a visit loved the vids it posted, their quality is trash
Americans, you're so wrong. Tier 3 & 4 cities are way more developed than many western cities. In comparison, Kunming (which you've never heard it) is larger than Atlanta.
I'm not Chinese but I agree.

Always impressed by the research behind. Great job !
I’ve been getting recommend this for over a week so I have to watch it for youtube to leave me alone
Good job China and Malaysia!!!! Stand your ground.
7:13 "Operation Green Fence"
shows a red and black fence instead because logic
It has no logo, the logo is added by the youtuber
I would personally credit Simcity 4 for introducing me to this subject.

"It's only five hours long!"
I don't agree with the politics of China but their naming schemes are great
China's corruption is at the local level. US and the rest of five eyes is at the top. Also, democracy doesn't work when the average american is an absolute dumb fuck. Would you allow your retail workers to make big decisions with your company? No
In Devon UK where I live you have to wash, sort and recycle. Recycling collected every week. Landfill every three weeks and you only get one bin to fill. Genius. It has forced people to recycle who would not have bothered otherwise.
Yeaaaaa im gonna speak for all of us and say fuck off
As an American I have to thank the Chinese government for this. The recycling business is booming in the USA today.

It says “共产党批准了这条水” which translates to “the communist party approves this bottle of water”. However, “条” is to describe animals here in china. A better term would be “瓶”
一条水is a stream of water.
@Mathematical Constants Subscriber Challenge
Technically “一条水” wouldn’t work but “一条河” would. It would have to be “一条水流”

4.4 lbs of waste a day?!! Per person?!! What the heck?! My family of 7 together doesn't make that much waste per day. Are they averaging us with commercial waste or something?
0:36 did anyone notice that the tier 4 city Hohhot was written as Hothot
I like the water bottle with "CCP approved this bottle of water" on it hahaha
well, to be fair, everything in china needs to be approved by the gov(for safety reason and whatnot)
well, to be fair, everyone in US takes drug and go to prison, that’s their life style

According to the Food Sustainability Index 2017, the countries with the lowest food waste generation per capita include Greece and China (44 kg per year), followed by India (51 kg). The countries with the highest waste creation are Australia (361 kg), followed by the U.S. (278 kg)
With the largest population, China produced the largest quantity of plastic, at nearly 60 million tonnes. This was followed by the United States at 38 million
China: 1.37 billion population
USA: 329.45 million population
Who is the trash producer and food waster ?
You know, if plastic trash lasts so long, we could just keep it in landfills until we want to recycle it.
I think you can win a nobel prize in economics
Today i learnt that Scotland/UK and San Franciso have the same bin setup
The book is only five hours long you say ...
If I didn't know that you meant the Audiobook, that would have sounded weird.
I dunno. waste minimization solution: Electronics taxes and repair/maintenance subsidies. I've heard alot of people talk about how they don't really need more than 1080p. tbh we could potentially stop at there and just push the price of electronics ridiculously high and repairing semi to super affordable. Build soda fountains w/ some kind of subscription service to minimize plastics waste for bottles. They're some of the ideas that came to mind while watching this video.
