Actually, that only really holds true for submissives, if a more dominant person is trying to get with you, they often lower their voice.
Have you considered that you may be misreading signals?
@@succusage3966 Strangely, I have read articles that claim that men prefer women with higher voices, and articles claiming that men prefer women with lower voices.
Generally, I prefer women with slightly lower voices.
There's still no way this man's voice is lower than my grades

he hits that low f tho

Your comment was the first thing I saw when I clicked out of full screen, and (mind you, I'm alone), I laughed so hard I was wheezing, and one of my ribs dislocated. I hope you're happy 🤣 Thank you for the beauty of this, it has made my day. I will be showing this video to my friends, solely so that I can show them your comment

He once performed in Charleston, WV, possibly with Elvis. At one point, he sang so low, the dust on the loudspeakers started falling off!
I saw him perform live. Hit a note so low the ceiling tiles began to rattle and drop stuff on the audience.
Serious?

Fun fact: JD Sumner, the vocalist, was almost always drunk when he sang. It helped him relax his vocal cords. His group, The Stamps, sang mostly Southern Gospel, but also sang backup for Elvis for a time. On more than one occasion, shows were cancelled cause JD was too drunk to be on stage.
that fact isn't very fun
being drunk is fun
"but also sang backup for Elvis for a time"
Was he the bass singer for Way Down?
*Edit* I just googled it and holy shit he was.
Chad
Im a young basso profundo, can hit a chest voice A1 very well, at 24yo (I expect to get a few more notes as the years come). BUT I can confirm that drinking and smoking (not a lot of smok, just to warm up the folds :P) can reaaally ease up those bottom notes + give that extra deep fat tone that would otherwise sound airy and meh. Theoretically he is hiiting a chest E1 and I can guarantee he cant do that without some chemical cheats. I can reach a good full sound sexy chest G1, Gb1 when really "warmed", but sober even an A1 can be a hard stretch. Being drunk out of shape is lame, but it really is weird how some "avoid" behaviors for hitting top notes can actually help hitting the bottom ones. (disclaimer: dont do this to get a deeper voice, doesnt work like that. I dont want anyone starting drugs for a deep voice. It just allows an easier reach for the bottom notes, for a short time, about the same as the "morning voice")
All your bass are belong to him.
Underrated 👌

Keep going, buddy
I can't even hit that root note with my vocal fry range, and this man is bustin it out in his chest voice like it's nothing. insane.
I have a bass voice lower than 99% of bass singers... just not JD Sumner. I am good to E1 in chest voice. JD could get to C1 in chest voice which is crazy to me.
Ima just chill out over here with my high falsetto
@@luckless1798, I can also hit A5 in falsetto :D. Fun fact about low bass singers: we also have long vocal cords that thin out easily, so we have dynamic voices with wide ranges... I am still in chest voice to B4 and mixed up to C#5.
@@johndeeregreen4592 wow I didn't know that, that's impressive
@@luckless1798, if you've never heard of him, check out Eric Halloway. He is an Oktavist, who's range is F1-F5. (in this video; although, he has gone much lower). The power of his voice is just crazy.

I wish i had sheet music for all this so I could cover this whole song on my bass guitar
he goes lower than a standard bass you may need a 6-7 string
@@subaruboi4944 the bass guitar reads an octave higher of produced sound (just like the doublebass). The lowest note he sings is a E1 so it fits perfectly with a 4-string!
@@neog yes very true- guitar also reads an octave higher
@@subaruboi4944 6-7 string bass guitar only limits down to B0 for lowest. I think 4 string would be good enough since the lowest is E1.
the song is "I am going over home" (I think) though idk how all they changed the song. (they obviously transposed his part down but I don't know if they changed it or not)
0:33 that's actually the secret to painless death metal growls.
Death metal growls are painless with proper technique.
As somehave said, this is JD's natural range, not subharmonics. On top of that. He could go WAY lower. Like blow your car subwoofers out in a few seconds low.
As a tuba player, that is impressive. Looks a lot like the sheet music I read.
I play tuba as well :D I have an easier time hitting high notes other than low notes tho
The man was basically a human tuba
JD sumner. A true legend of gospel music. He sang with Elvis the last 5 years of his life or so. Elvis loved gospel music.
The note at 0:38 absolutely merits microtonal notation. It sounds amazing! Just saying the fact that it is a quarter-tone-sharp A is relevant to the transcription. Also, I'm joking.
nerd
I feel validated rn
I did feel now that I listened to that for the first time in years that he did just barely miss the note. Amazing to see agreement in the comment section.
You're kidding, but you're right.
I think he's just not in tune lol
That first “Jordan” made my brain itch
JD is my personal hero, he met Elvis sang with him and got to that first and only C1 on chest in the song Way Down, what a voice he is truly a legend, bye king of basses RIP
There’s always that one thing I love about the olden days vocals bruh.
It makes me feel very old and mature and have Vietnam war ptsd at the age of 16
When you burp the ABCs so often that you unlock the ability to sing while burping
bro i swear to god this is how my brother snors at night i hear him from the second floor
JD Sumner was the man back in the day. I was watching a thing about Elvis, when he was a kid he broke into a concert to see JD Sumner. He was being kicked out, but JD Sumner told them to let him stay. Years later JD and the Stamps Quartet sang backup for Elvis.
i think whats so insane about this is how it just fits in his range and he doesnt have to adjust his timbre much at all. Take the A1 at 0:20. most low bass singers today would have to heavily adjust timbre to get any volume or seek other techniques to hit it (subharmonics, growl, vocal fry). meanwhile sumner just, hits it, and makes it seem so effortless. Wont see anyone like him for a long time
Even that E1 seems so easy for him he still has a lot below that
People said that when they found the Challenger Abyss, they still noticed this man's tone going even deeper.
i am so happy you found jd and i dont know if you know but he could go down to a g0 but i think the lowest he sang was either a c1 or Bb0
The ultimate bass
When I was a toddler, this man performed at my church. I was being a little turd not being quiet when this booming voice suddenly said "shut up kid, Im talking." Everybody got a good chuckle from that. Still fresh in my mind all these years later.
J.D. Sumner! One of my favorites along with Tim Riley and George Younce.
I love how all the other guys sound completely normal and then there's just this chad.
those are some deep lyrics man
this man is an entire tuba
This man is LEGENDARY.
His name is J.D Sumner.
He held the Guinness World Record for the lowest note ever sung by a human for more than half a decade.
He was one of Elvis Presley's close friends and he and his band 'The Stamps' wer Elvis' backup singers and used to open his shows for him.
JD use to let a young Elvis in the back door to hear his quartet when Elvis didn't have any money. Elvis loved his music and never forgot him and paid him back many times over.
Whats the name of this song?

This guy:

JD held the record for lowest bass for years. Fun fact about him was that he was one of Elvis' best friends and played a large part in planning his funeral arrangements. Southern Gospel has always had the best basses because it's music that written in a way that they can shine. JD was terrific. George Younce was incredibly enjoyable. Richard Sterban (also toured with JD and Elvis but better known for the Oak Ridge Boys) is one of the best living. Tim Duncan of Canton Junction and Tim Riley (formally) of Gold City are also tops. Do yourself a favor and look them up. These modern "acappela" groups that everyone likes to talk about have nothing on Gospel quartets.
100%. And... the fact that I had to scroll this far down in the comments before Richard Sterban's name finally came up is nearly criminal.

I met J.D. Sumner him when I played a show tape for a rich guy doing an Elvis impersonation. He hired half of Elvis’ “Aloha from Hawaii” band! The man was about 6’7” and his voice rattled your chest just speaking with him. A true bass voice.

Lmao I got a puberty ad on this vid😂😂😂😂😂
the most impressive part imo isnt when he goes really low when saying home because from my experience O sounds are easier to maintain in a deep voice. Its the extended AN after jordan. Once again from my experience A tends to produce a higher pitch sound than O.
That sound you make when singing into a fan 😂
literally off the charts
I've always felt that his friend George Younce had a better voice, but no one can deny the legend of the first man to hold the "deepest recorded voice" record.

Know what makes me sad but all the more appreciative of vocalists like this? Or any vocalist really since each is unique. Guitars, pianos, wind instruments can be constructed and reproduced, and humans will always be able to make more of them. But when a vocalist dies, a one of a kind musical instrument with its own unique capabilities and timbre is lost to the world forever.
JD Sumner was a fantastic bass singer. I really like the way he sings. He will be missed.
That’s a freakin E note ! True basso
