The Duke was very supportive of his friends and fellow actors. Arness worked with Wayne in a number of pictures, three that come to mind are Big Jim McClain (1952); Island In The Sky (1953); and Sea Chase (1955). Wayne was primarily a big-screen actor which is probably why he didn't want to be contractually tied up with a TV series. So he recommended his friend Jim Arness and the rest is film history.

Wayne was never offered the role. He was spoken too about the show, and he _did_ recommend Arness for the part, but he was never offered the role himself. That's a myth that's been going on for years, but it _is_ a myth. Charles Warren -- Gunsmoke's first director -- denied that Wayne was ever offered the role, and he understood it would have been preposterous to suppose that Wayne, at the peak of his career, and arguably the biggest movie star in Hollywood at the time, would have given up movie stardom to do a television series. It would have been a huge step down in his career.

@@strattuner Your comment prompted a quick search by myself. From what I read, you are correct with certain circumstances. "Reasonable suspicion" means an arrest warrant, observation of the suspect entering the house, a known address of the suspect, etc. It does not allow them to search a "third party" residence without cause. A search cannot be done on mere suspicion without a search warrant. They do have to show some type of warrant be it an arrest warrant for the person being sought or a search warrant issued by a judge or the like. Agreed. Arness would have made a great Jack Reacher.
I wouldn't sell Cruise short however, even though height wise he is. Could be you're putting too much emphasis on physical size as opposed to balls and heart. What other action actor do you know of who does his own stunts on the level Cruise does AND who owns and flies a P-51 with a stock empennage, an old warbird that will kill you if you don't have the right stuff including an attention span. Maybe you don't see it but the 'look' Cruise's eye is capable of doesn't come from acting class. That takes some life experience and an acceptance of the fact that killing is sometimes necessary and appropriate. He may have once been just another 'pretty boy', but take another look. Plus he's likely good box office for short guys with Napolean complexes and that ilk needs all the help they can get.

But I do NOT agree that the behavior of the majority of those in law enforcement is worthy of condemnation. We ask our police officers to do what is too often an impossible job. They see the worst of society. The demands made on them, and their inability to respond perfectly in every situation, take a terrible toll and are reflected in their higher rates of alcoholism, depression, divorce, and suicide. There are some obvious remedies for this, but as a society we have yet to prioritize and employ those remedies.
