    Absolutely superb video! With manuals in super small type face and with (sometimes) ‘Chinglish’ descriptions it can be hard to set up Hats. I know when I started out I had no clue what some of the functions meant or did! Even now, this vid is super useful. A companion video for say Boafeng variants would be helpful to many too. The Egzumer firmware is outrageously good!
    More generally, your wider content is consistently good. Thanks for all you share on YT!
    As someone who struggles with DMR set up concepts this would be my most ‘wished for’ offering!!

    Thank you for making this video. It provided a nice short explanation of each menu item. While I have been a ham for many years, most of my activity has been on HF. I just received this radio, and I am trying to learn what all of these functions do, but just using the manual provided with its tiny print, I often get overwhelmed. Your video has helped a lot. I will probably watch it many times, with my radio in hand. --Mark, KE6BB

    Thanks for the helpful explanation of all the menu functions. Just a note, you really should calibrate the battery Voltage indication. Yours is showing 8.47V! Lithium Ion should never go above 8.4V for a 2S battery. I’m certain if you put a known good meter on the rear battery terminals it will be a bit less than 8.4V in reality. The USB charging port won’t take it much above 8V. The base stand charger stops at less than 8.4V (at least mine does anyway). My Set was showing well above the actual battery Voltage when new out of the box last week. HTH.

    STE is mainly used on repeaters (a receiver that uses CTCSS). It is supposed to continue TXing for a short duration but with no CTCSS or a reverse tone on DCS. Most of these radios don't do it correctly so it remains a useless feature because it wasn't built correctly. On commercial 2-way radios systems back in the day that used CTCSS (PL/CG/QT tones) it works great. Most hams don't set their repeaters up correctly for these features to work right.

    • @ragheadand420roll
      @ragheadand420roll 10 месяцев назад +3

      Reverse burst or Squelch Tail Elimination ("STE") is a process that uses a change of the phase of the PL tone encoder for a short period of time after the user unkeys the PTT button. The term "reverse burst" is used to describe the deliberate phase change for a specific abount of time while the transmitter carrier stays on - about 150 to 200ms - with the phase of the PL encoder offset by from 120 to 180 degrees (180, naturally is a complete reversal). During the reverse burst time period the reverse phase stops the PL decode reed dead in its tracks - which slams the receiver squelch closed right now. By the time the transmitter actually drops off the air the RX squelch is already closed - which results in no burst of squelch noise being heard.

    Hi Ben. Thank you for a well-explained tutorial. I need, from an experimental task only, even when I am fully licensed G4SVY, to transmit in all bands but find the F Lock feature to do that does not change anything? You mentioned something in the way of having to repeat the operation 10 times, can you elaborate on how exactly you do that to unlock all bands, please?

    • @m7frs272
      @m7frs272  10 месяцев назад

      Hi, when you go into the hidden menu and select 'F Lock' then 'Unlock All' you'll get the message 'Read Manual' Repeat the 'Unlock All' selection 10 times and eventually you will no longer get the 'Read Manual' message and the radio is unlocked.

      Hi Alan. If you just was a cheap radio for listening to aircraft then this should be fine, especially if your not planning on transmitting with it. (You can turn off transmit in the settings if you want to) Most, if not all of the modified firmware will improve AM reception. The only issue with these radios is when people try using them to transmit on frequencies that they are not intended for. Hope this helps.

      It is possible in CHIRP. If you select 'settings' then 'driver information' then check the box 'limits disabled for modified firmware'. You should then be able to write out of band frequencies and names.

    Question if I may? Menu 7 and Menu 8 Directional Offset/Directional Frequency.
    Does this work as per frequency? Say I have a repeater, for example my local Slough. I'm monitoring it, it is highlighted with the black triangle on the home screen, and I want to change the directional offset and frequency to + 1.6Mgz. I go into the menu 7 and menu 8 and change the offset. Does this now save to that frequency (Slough) alone?
    So if I now go to the Bracknell repeater and change it offset using menu 7 and 8, it will save its offset also, and not mess up Slough's offset?
    I was slightly confused, thinking when I changed offsets in menu 7 and 8 it was a global change across all frequencies.
    Thank you for any help you may divulge 😊

    Thanks for the great tutorial 🎉. I have one question: Were can I get the list whit all those channels? 73 from Romania

    • @m7frs272

      That depends what channels you want to listen to. It's usually very dependent on your area. Searching Google for active frequencies in your area is best. Thanks for watching 👍

    I'm a bit of a newbie with this radio, so please excuse the question: If I flash my radio with this firmware (Egzumer v0.20), can I still continue to program it with Chirp Next? Also, will you be doing a video on the next Egzumer version (0.21)? Thanks!

    • @m7frs272
      @m7frs272  10 месяцев назад +1

      Yes that's absolutely fine. To be honest I haven't planned to do a video on version 0.21 as the basics are the same. Hope that helps.

    Awesome job Ben and I hope all is well 🤝 I have a question for ya. I noticed that when powering on my radio, channel A / channel 1 is always on AM. I've set the Demodulation to FM and on powering on the radio it reverts back to AM with TX disabled. Also, I noticed that after setting the Demodulation to FM , if I go to another channel and then go back to the previous channel 1, it will be set to AM also. Is their a way to fix this or do I have to manually change it every time I turn on or change the channel ?

    On the "99" version, press F then 5 to bring up the spectrum scope on screen. I shouldn't wonder it's on this too, as it does everything except wash your shirt.
    🤓
    Dd you look to see if you can get the Spectrumscope on this one?

      I am uniformed but i saw a menu item Reset. In the hidden menu. Hold the radio in your right hand the buttons on the edge, press top button while pressing middle button. Use left hand to turn on. After the welcome msg. it will show hidden menu. I think 53 go down to reset. Warning i have no idea if original firmware comes back.

      That's the UV-K5 (8) model that has the orange screen. Unfortunately you can't change the colours in the firmware.
