Never had any issues all the years in France. 1. We avoid major cities and high volume tourist areas as this is where most thieves hang out. 2 we use French Passion sites, municipal campsites and aires. If we do use car parks it’s usually in a small village. We never leave the camper in big supermarkets as we have a dog so one stays behind. Now I am not saying with these precautions it’s foolproof but it massively reduces the risk. Plus we meet mainly French motorhomers who have been exceptionally helpful and friendly

Hi guys this is nothing new in France, myself and ex wife travelled in a camper many times across france/Europe and been broken into 3 times. Pronounced Carrc ca sonn beautiful area. By the way DON'T PARK IN AYERS at nite. Be careful of laybys that are out the way , don't get out of your camper if some is flashing their lights because they want you to get out of you car. Your better over near the Alps, be always Very aware. Stay safe guys.

Yes Ive been to Carcassonne too, lovely but found it more expensive as it seems to cater for retirees and those with bigger budgets. I took the train close by and stayed in Toulouse a beautiful University City on the river. I loved it there, had a wider age group. I couch surfed with an Italian host and had a really fabulous time as he organised many things for me even a BBQ and out to a jazz bar one night. So Toulouse was a highlight for me. Couch surfing has some really wonderful people as hosts 🙂

We got robbed while van sleeping on a layby in San Sebastian, Spain about 20 years ago. They smashed in the windows and threatened us with metal bars, lucky no-one was hurt but we could not find anywhere to replace the windows and had to drive back to England. We were dumb to park next to the road at night, use campsites, rural areas or stay out of sight and you will be ok. Stay frosty guys

My grandparents, parents and sister all lived in Spain and when returning to live in the UK spend as much time as they can there. My dad drives down and my mum flies and meets him there. Last year my dad was slammed over the head whilst getting petrol. They used big stones in socks as their weapon. My dad fought them but what a horrible experience.

We’ve been motor homing for 8 year now and the first thing I read on a forum was not to go on motorway services in France. Thankfully we have not come across any scams etc. in France but in Spain we were woken up by drunks driving onto the aire at 2.30am. They did drive off eventually. This happened twice so we then decided to stay on sites only and felt much safer. The aires in France have all been really good but we prefer sites. I do hope Ibiza is safer for you! ❤

Hi, loving following your adventures. I would suggest that while you are in Ibiza, take the time and take a ferry trip over to Formentera. It is the most idyllic island, especially after Ibiza. Endless beaches, delicious food and a very diverse community. Well worth the trip, only about an hour or so by ferry and very safe. It would be such a shame to miss this island when you are so close. 😊

I lived in France and Italy for some years, and travelled quite a bit around - but didn't camp nor slept in a vehicle, yet I've heard several stories where thieves would pipe some gas into the targeted vehicle... causing the people inside to pass out. They woke up with horrible headaches, all their belongings gone, one little dog died in one of the incidents, and much worse... some of the women could tell something was done to them during the process 😔 I vowed that I'd only stay in campgrounds if I vanned in France, and would get motion lights/alarms on each side of my rig + a sensitive gas detector inside.
    Be safe out there! 🙌🏼🫡

  • @peterjohnson653
    @peterjohnson653 Месяц назад +17

I hope your experience doesn’t put people off staying at French aires. The “aires” at motorway services are not the same as the nationwide network of aires in villages and towns provided often free by the community and designed to attract visitors in motorhomes and camper vans to spend money in local shops and businesses. There is a lot of misunderstanding because both types are called “aires” but in reality are totally different. Motorway services are fine for taking a rest, using the toilets and having a shower in daytime but are notorious for being unsafe for sleeping in overnight. I wouldn’t risk sleeping at British motorway services either. Proper French aires are fantastic and safe. Some have toilets although showers are very rare. Other good options for cheap or free overnight stays are vineyards, municipal campsites, commercial privately owned aires and the relatively new commercial “camping car parks” which often have facilities, particularly when they have taken over a former municipal campsite.

Your experiences on motor way stops are why we avoid them completely there are lots of other stops for campers next to villages etc. if you return to carcasonne which is well worth it we stopped just outside next door to a campsite in a paid aire with a barrier. Micro camping works but not in car. You need a Ford connect LWB with auning. Roof rack with 4 micro CCTV camaras, NO windows and alarm with manual activation. You also need a tracker linked to your mobile and internal CCTV. A small valuables safe welded out of site to the subframe is useful. The British number plate is a magnet. Register your car in France and use a French number plate when in France . Same for Spain . These are little tricks that will help you. Good luck.

I have done a lot of van camping in the US. Here's a few tips: do not give money to people. A lot of them of them are checking to see if you have any cash on you. If you give them money, then they know you do have cash and it makes you a high target for being robbed. Hide all electronics- do not leave any charging cables in plain site, and dress like you are poor.. It's tempting to wear nice clothing , ,but it also puts out the message that you have money.
I have been mistaken for a homeless person on many occasions, but have never been broken into.

Europe isn’t as safe as it used to be, always make sure the wheel brace is within reach in case you suddenly get a flat tyre and a couple of baseball bats to keep you fit, better to have and not need than to need and not have and get a few cans of deep heat in case you pull a muscle while using the bats for some reason it burns the eyes and doesn’t taste great either, so make sure you spray in the right direction. Little suggestion guys, buy a few tins of that really cheap hairspray u can get, the stuff that’s super sticky. Now dot them around the car in easy to reach places. Should an attacker gain entry to the car during the night, a can grabbed and sprayed in their face may be that few extra seconds u need to get away. One sprays, one drives. Plus and this is a positive or negative depending on ur point of view lol hairspray won’t cause lasting damage to said attacker 🤷‍♀️ Stay safe ❤

Hi guys just been watching your video. It’s been known for years that service station aires in France & Spain are not safe. Most towns and villages away from the motorways have aires that are perfectly safe and mostly free. Please don’t be put off by aires just avoid service stations at all costs. There have been instances where people have been gassed and wake in the morning to find they have been robbed. Good luck with your travels.

The worst thing that can happen to a beautiful country is to let values and basic standards of life fall into crime. I hope we in Europe can get to grips with this. Europe has let go of its Christian heritage and where there is a vacuum, all sorts of unpleasantness floods in. I love other beliefs and cultures btw its just that Europe is Christian…

Great video, guys! Cheers for the heads up on the dodginess of Southern France. I've tried sleeping on the beach in Ibiza - it's dodgy as fook, cos the guys selling you them dodgy shades in the bars are the same ones who'll rob you (without violence) while you sleep on the beach. So my friend and I stayed in hotels out of season. This was in May 2016 and we didn't pay more than €25 each a night. It's almost always cheaper if you just rock up to the front desk of the hotel. I love travel soooo much, and watching you two learning as you go is an inspiration to many. I used to do it (making vids etc), but now I just can't be arsed!! France has about 10000 dedicated motorhome (camping car) aires. I have no idea why you are going to sevice stations which are notorious for crime. The word "aire" just means area, so could you be mistaking service areas for mh aires? The former are very dangerous and the latter are not. I know you're not technically a mh, but I still think you're perectily entitled to use them for car camping. There is an App called Camper Contact which is better for France than Park4Night. Also if you buy your petrol at supermarkets then a) its a lot cheaper and b) you can usually pay at the pump so no-one can clone your card.

I do alot of traveling through EU .... I get right off the motorway when stopping overnight there are much better /smaller aires /places to stop in country villages . I travel off motorways altogether when i can + better fuel prices . Dont park in busy areas. Stay away from Towns /Cities. Take all your expensive items with you when leaving your van. You will more than likely suffer a smash & Grab at some point. Coastal built up areas Spain & Portugal really bad. + You need to get back into a bigger van unless you are thinking of jetting off somewhere warmer for the winter months Best of Luck !

Stay away from sites on motorways. You're better off going to small towns. Find the Marie and stay there. The mayor is basically the police and they should be much safer and quieter. Normally there's a toilette. Just as another heads up, some of aires are gay hook up sites. I had a friend who was propositioned with his son who were on a treasure hunt. I live in france.

Sorry guys I thought everybody in the camping world knew not to stay on busy aires. They have always been dangerous places to stay for years. My wife and I have given up our motorhomes now after 30 years of use. We have travelled all over france and only had two minor issues involving noise and drunkenness . We would always look to see where french motorhomes parked up for the night and stay with them. Or used the aires in villages. Years ago it was found that foreign lorry drivers were breaking into campervans and caravans on motorway aires. 30 years ago there were not the amount of migrants all over france that there are now. Also in those day you could pull up outside a Marie and stay for one night, I dont know if that is possible now. Personally I think it was a mistake to go from Morgan to car camplng because you will always be comparing the two units with only one winner. But good luck for the future, and stay safe.

Motorway Aires been a problem for years. We’ve been visiting for over 30 years, first with caravan, now with campervan. Lots of crime in the South of France, particularly around the port areas. We were going to Spain one year, about 12 years ago, by car. Another car tried to flag us down near the border, pointing at the front of our car. My husband (ex drugs DC, who actually travelled to various areas of France on a case) knew not to stop. Marseilles area is particularly bad. Very scary. We prefer rural France, Italy, and Europe in general these days. If you want beaches try the West coast of France.
