Wow Ryan, thanks. This is perfect. Only been playing a few years and Nothingman never seemed to feel quite right with all the other versions I tried. This absolutely nails it, and surprisingly easy too. Thanks man.
What a coincidence! I was just about to search up this song, but right before I did I got a notification from your channel, found out it was Nothingman THE REAL WAY! Yes! Thank you so much Ryan, you’re the best Pearl Jam teacher I know :D
Hey Ryan, I had this lesson on my "watch later" list - today I played - I'm a beginner and this was fantastic! I am able to play it, and it's a delicious and wonderful song! Thanks man! Regards!
Absolutely brilliant, I loved your first method and it sounded right enough to me but I think my ear must have refined as I’ve learnt with you and you’ve nailed it here - definitely catches the resonance of the track with those two open F’s 5✨ !!!!!
I have a feeling the recent immediate thumbs-downers are one curmudgeon, because they are suddenly much more common! Thanks so much Chris, I'm glad you enjoyed that :)
Nothingman is awesome, it’s the first song I was finally able to play all the way through. I learned your jingly jangly version first, then Matt’s one which is almost the same as this but without sliding the F around. Now I’ll have to try this just to really confuse my poor little brain. Thanks mate
hahaha in Matt's defense the 'official PJ tabs book' didn't get the slidy F's either, but it's definitely the case, and anyway it's two different ways of doing much the same thing, except for that D note that is ever present :) Good luck Sam!
I've been playing guitar for 8 years and this is the only song i struggle to decipher and i just can't focus on anything because of how beautiful this song sounds
I wonder if I can get to 1,000 pj videos including covers they did + analysis of particularly interesting live versions of songs... I think I can :) Thanks for being along for the ride JT!
Giving my brain a rest from Garden and this is next on my huge to learn list. I’m surprised how quickly I can get a song down ( more or less) as opposed to when I started watching your tutorials. I’ll be in your band before you know it!!! As long as we play Zeppelin of course...... thanks for all your hard work Ryan, cheers.
To get the F on the treble E-string, I tune up a half tone (to F). I tune the B-string to a C, as you do. Then I only capo the lowest 5 strings, leaving the high E open. I wouldn't try this with thin strings (like .08s), but it works with .10s.
Mr. Ament at his absolute finest. One of my all time favorite tunes. Such a beautiful thing to hear. Thanks for your diligence Ryan. It's appreciated. *bonus* If you had Vitalogy on cassette you could flip the tape at the end of either Nothingman or Betterman and it would be at the start of the other.
Dude this tuning is magical. Great lesson as always! If you ever get the chance to ask Stone how he comes across these tuning/capo combinations (i.e. Life Wasted) I’d love to hear his answer.
judging by how he came across the let the records play tuning, I'm guessing it's usually pretty random! I must start a list "questions for stone" so someday I can interview him.
Hey, thank you for this. Nothingman is my favorite Pearl Jam song, and always takes me back. It was the first song I could play and sing at the same time, but definitely not this accurately. I'm relearning now so I can play this and Landslide for my dad. He was in a band in the 60s/70s called The Day Trippers and was undescribably amazing. Even after he got Parkinson's, it disappears (most of the time) when he picks up a guitar
7/7/19. Great song! Great lesson, Ryan! Tune B string up to C. Tune High E string down to C so the B and E strings have MATCHING C's. Capo on 5th fret. Second time you did this song, but I guess after watching some more videos of Stone Gossard, you think this version more matches what Stone did? What Capo did you use? Do you have a favorite Capo?……Today is 7/7/19, which has double 7s and the date adds up to 33, double 3s. In little league, my number was 7 for Mickey Mantle. I like commenting to the song "Nothingman" with this date, 7/7/19. My father often spoke to Babe Ruth, number 3, in the 1940s when they lived near each other and Babe was sick. I wanted to comment to you on 7/7/19......After watching you pitch on your Dominant 7th video, I was thinking you should see the movie "Lifeguard" , a 1976 movie starring Sam Elliot. I think you'll like it and relate to it. Take care, Ryan. (P.S. I should be preparing for lessons on video editing and not writing this now, but I wanted to leave a comment on "Nothingman" to you on 7/7/19. Maybe today is a rebirth.)
haha great connections there MM&M. yes this is what stone plays in nothingman. I still like my special way, but I now like this way just as much :) that capo is a brandless capo, my other capo is a thalia, they are the best capos.
Hello Ryan , hope all is well in Cali. I’m a huge mlb fan and I’m guessing you probably got that shirt from the MLB site but did ya ? I’d like to get one
Cheers - I've always played it by dropping only the high e to C and anhouring my finger on 2nd string C for the whole song. This is easier. Cheers. But if you want less tuning the other way works.
Not to be difficult but I think Jeff actually wrote this one :). Correct me if I'm wrong! Stone and Jeff are the best songwriters in history though undoubtedly!
Someone else seconded that notion - my statement was just a wild guess, I bet you're right :) You'd think I could look these things up before I speak, but there are just so... many... things to remember to remember!
@@RyanLendt Thank you Ryan, You know what, I de-tuned my guitar last night, put the capo and started playing. Loved it. Sounded so good. The way you break the tutorial in easy steps makes it very fun to learn and you are spreading the thick JAM. Rock On!!!!!
I'm afraid not Quentin, sorry! I usually just do it if I need them to keep track of things... I know it would be more helpful if I did it for every one, but that would take too much time to realistically keep up this breakneck pace.
@@RyanLendt gonna go Paul Rudd Lolol do you take song requests?? My wife and I’s wedding song was “Someone Like You” by Van Morrison. I’d love to play it for her so if you find out how to play it I’d love to learn from you! Either way cheers brother
Now capo the top 5 strings and tune your high e to f, you will get that 'chorusie' sound right out of the guitar ;-) Or don't retune your guitar put the capo on the fourth fret leaving the high e open and just play the campfire edition with normal chords but with the 'chorusie' sound.

I see what you did there ;) thanks Sean!
So many funky tuning versions of this song. You nailed it here. Thank you.
thanks Thomas! Had to get the song that got me into rock music right.

Wow, I have to relearn this (the right way). Sounds magical. Thanks, Ryan! Thanks, Stone!

Thanks again Ryan. I like how you know everything but aren't afraid to say "I don't know.... But this sounds good". Ryan is everyone's mate.

yayyyyy I love it when someone learns nothingman thanks Justin!
I always played this song in standard and I knew I was missing something! Thanks Ryan!
when I saw this comment i somehow knew you were talking about nothingman before i saw to which video it was referring :)
Beautiful song and, as always, perfect tuition Ryan. Going through your PJ collection and loving them..
thanks so much OB, I'm glad you're having a good time :)
Hi Ryan, it allways makes me happy to learn to play The Guitarre from you. Thank you🙏
aw thanks Jeannette. Always a pleasure to have you :)
What a great song, the chords in that tuning just sound amazing!
otherworldly

woo hoo thanks for the chris' new ear power approval! And I'm glad to hear your relationship with your earballs is deepening :)
I love the way Ryan doesn’t sing while explaining, like
“nothing, man”
“oh into, the sun”
it's hard to sing and explain at the same time :)
Yeah, don’t get me wrong. I mean that I literally love it. I admire you man
The one down thumber is clearly a nothingman!
Ryan your the best!
Thanks for the lesson😎
